1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; 2 and they rose up in face of Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of renown; 3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them: 'Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?' 4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face. 5 And he spoke unto Korah and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him. 6 This do: take you censors, Korah, and all his company; 7 and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before the LORD tomorrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.' 8 And Moses said unto Korah: 'Hear now, ye sons of Levi: 9 is it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you

These are the laws which were said at the loft of Hanina son of Hezqia son of garon when they went to visit him. They counted the people and Beit Shammai outnumbered Beit Hillel and 18 laws were made that day, and that day was as bad for Israel as the day the [golden] calf was made Rabbi Yehoshua Onaya taught: Students of Beit Shammai stood below and were killing the students of Beit Hillel. It was taught: Six of them went up and the rest stood upon them with swords and spears.

R. Abba stated in the name of Samuel: For three years there was a dispute between Beth Shammaiand Beth Hillel, the former asserting, The halachah is in agreement with our views and the lattercontending, The halachah is in agreement with our views . Then a bath kol issued announcing, [The utterances of] both are the words of the living God, but the halachah is in agreement with therulings of Beth Hillel . Since, however, both are the words of the living God what was it thatentitled Beth Hillel to have the halachah fixed in agreement with their rulings? Because they werekindly and modest, they studied their own rulings and those of Beth Shammai, and were even so[humble] as to mention the actions of Beth Shammai before theirs.

Come and hear: though these forbade what the others permitted . . . Bethshammai, nevertheless, did not refrain from marrying women from thefamilies of beth hillel, nor did beth hillel [refrain from marry ingwomen] from the families of beth shammai. Now, if it be said that they did not act[in accordance with their own view] one can well understand why they did not refrain[from intermarrying with one another]. If, however, it be said that they did act [in accordancewith their own view], why did they not refrain? That beth shammai did not refrain from marryingwomen from the families of beth hillel may well be justified because such are the children ofpersons guilty only of the infringement of a negative precept;but why did not beth hillel refrainfrom [marrying women from the families of] beth shammai? Such, surely, being children ofpersons who are guilty of an offence involving kareth, are bastards!...[similarlyin respect of] all [the questions of ritual] cleanness and uncleanness, which these declared clean

If you will repent, said he, I will give you my sister [inmarriage], who is more beautiful than I. He undertook [to repent]; then he wished to return andcollect his weapons, but could not.
