Research title in Ph. D., Dissertation ails Application of correlation methods for location of Partial discharge in transformer windings
Guide: Dr.S.Usa, Head & Professor, DEEE, CEG, Anna University, Guindy, Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. Research Summary: Transformer is one of the most important equipment playing a major role in a power system. Any failure in the transformer winding will have a crucial impact on the energy system operation. About fifty percent of the failures in transformers are due to gradual deterioration of winding insulation, which mainly occurs because of partial discharges (PD). When a PD is initiated, high frequency transient pulses of duration ranging from nanoseconds to 5 microseconds are generated. Identification and location of PD sources are of major importance in both maintenance and repair of the equipment. In this study, an attempt has been made to analyze the usefulness of correlation methods to locate the PD in transformer windings. Correlation methods compute the strength of relationship between two responses (signals) through correlation coefficient which needs a set of reference signals. The winding response for a known voltage pulse of duration 1s across the different sections of the winding is considered as reference responses for correlation. The measured winding response for a real or test PD (for any PD pulse duration from 0.1s to 5s) at unknown location is correlated with reference responses. The proposed correlation based methods are validated by using standard PD calibrator to create the PD pulse. In addition, live discharges are created across the section of the windings using plane-needle electrode configuration. Different dielectric media between the electrode arrangements are used to produce different types of discharges across the sections of the windings. The measured real PD responses due to PD calibrator and real discharges are correlated with reference responses. An attempt has also been made to validate the proposed methods for a 25MVA, 220kV/6.7kV power transformer by simulation to locate PD. This work proposes different based correlation methods to locate the PD in transformer windings. The proposed methods are useful for the transformer industry to locate the PD with a single set of reference responses of any type and rating of transformer.
