kdr Gives You 5: June 8, 2011

(I actually wrote this post yesterday on my flight, but due to no wi-fi, here's yesterday's edition today!) I didn't expect to be writing one of these today - I'm on my way down to Bonnaroo as I write this - but there were just too many great songs coming at me this week to not send out an update. I'm sure I'll see many of you this week as we wallow in our own filth. Should be a blast. Last week I went to the mega-show I mentioned - Unknown Mortal Orchestra, Headless Horseman,Balkans and Fort Lean at Glasslands. It was a stellar night of music, but as much as I loved each act in its own way, I thought Fort Lean kind of owned the night in terms of energy and raw musical ability. If you still haven't heard their EP, take a listen. For June 8, 2011: GIVERS: "Saw You First" (In Light) - download | stream | web You've probably heard GIVERS by now - the Lafayette Louisiana quintet has made a good bit of noise over the past year, and their EP last year made a lot of year end lists for things to be excited about. They've followed up well with their debut LP, In Light, which came out yesterday on Glassnote Records - it's full of fun tracks and interesting rhythms. My favorite is one I've been listening to for a few months now, "Saw You First", which reminds me (in the best way) of that song from Ice Age. I'll be catching the band at Bonnaroo and they'll be headlining Bowery Ballroom on the 16th. Marissa Nadler: "The Sun Always Reminds Me Of You" (s/t) download | stream | web I've had a thing for Marissa Nadler over the past few years, but have yet to see her live. I loved her 2009 record, Little Hells, but from what I've heard of her newest self-titled record, the best is yet to come. Her music is folksy, but with an element of eeriness, and I really dig that about her. NPR is currently streamingher new record, which comes out next Tuesday on her own label, Box of Cedar Records. Camden: "Diamonds in Bloom" (Totally stream | web It's always interesting when someone surprises you in another. I've known photographer for the past few years, Fine EP) - download | you know in one capacity Jason Bergman as a but while he's a great

photographer, the band he plays drums for may be even better. Camden is a quartet from Boston, and this is a great jam for the summer. It comes off their upcoming EP, Totally Fine, which is coming out July 12th. They've got a great sound. The Postelles: "Can't Stand Still" (s/t) - download | stream | web I've been waiting for this record for quite awhile (as have many others). When I first heard The Postelles 3 years ago I knew they had something - especially considering lead singer Daniel Balk's incredible voice. So finally it's good to hear a full record of songs that I've already heard live - and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Produced by Albert Hammond Jr, it's got some incredibly catchy songs. This one is my favorite - and perhaps one of my favorite songs of this year. It's phenomenal. White Life: "Time Is Wasting" (s/t) - download | stream | web This one was brought to my attention by the Stark boys, and I'm certainly glad I gave it a listen. White Life is the latest (and best) project of Jon Ehrens. Their debut self-titled LP dropped last month - it's poppy and synthy and it has some huge jams. This is one of those jams. If you don't dig at first, don't give up on it - when you get to the guitar riff, you'll understand why this is one of the best new tracks I've heard. As always, let me know if you don't want to be on this list, or if you have a great idea for it - I'm always ready to listen. And if you have artists or songs that you think would work well on this list, or that would be up for having me take their photo, by all means, let me know. Pass this email on - this list is growing weekly. And as I've said before, just because I'm sending something around doesn't mean it's necessarily cool to post online - be sure to get the band's permission before doing so! cheers, kyle Kyle Dean Reinford Photographer 574.238.5080
