Communications for the open minded

Product-related environmental protection is not an end in itself. In many cases, it results in economic advantages in addition to environmental compatibility. However, for this to happen, the environmental aspects must be taken into consideration very early on in the products evolution that is, in the planning and development stage. An environmental-friendly approach end-to-end Product environmental compatibility during the use phase With many of our products and solutions, manufacturing accounts for just a small fraction of their environmental impact. The actual use phase offers far greater scope for reducing their overall environmental footprint. An energyefficient solution, for example, not only avoids emissions and helps to conserve resources, it also keeps energy costs down, combining a lifecycle cost advantage for the customer with concrete environmental benefits.

Integrated Environmental and Quality Management System

The environmental management system of Siemens Enterprise Communications has been an integral part of the quality management system for many years. As part of this management system, we systematically identify environmental aspects and develop appropriate environmental goals and programs. Our environmental goals focus on the issues of energy consumption, improved development of materials and waste management as well as environmentally-friendly product design (Design for Environment, or DfE) combined with specialized staff training in these areas. This environmental management system is implemented according to the requirements of the ISO 14001 standard and certified by an external certification company. Furthermore, all Siemens Enterprise Communications suppliers and contract manufacturers are expected to have a documented environmental management system in place and, through Siemens Enterprise Communications strict set of environmental standards, are also integrated into its environmental policy and principles.

As part of our corporate culture, we take steps to minimize adverse environmental impacts at all Siemens manufacturing sites worldwide. Production facilities have the very latest environmentally-friendly equipment and implement state-of-the-art measures for reducing emissions, such as: Solder systems with condensate traps minimize both the deposition of solvents at the workstation and emissions into the atmosphere. Our manufacturing processes are completely free of CFCs, volatile CHCs (chlorinated solvents) and hazardous substances. Module production is practically wastewater-free since the use of low-residue fluxes makes cleaning unnecessary.

Environmental product declarations (EPDs) make product lifecycle impacts transparent

Siemens environmental product declarations are DIN ISO 14021 compliant, self-declarations regarding product or product groups environmental profiles, including details of assessment criteria and assessment systems. Our internal standard SN 36350 references, among others DIN ISO 11469 (Generic identification and marking of plastic products), IEC Guide 109 (Environmental Aspects - Inclusion in Electro-technical Product Standards) ISO 14001 (Environmental Management Systems - Specification) and ISO 14040 (Life Cycle Assessment - General Principles and Practices).

Design for Environment

We follow our goal of minimizing adverse environmental impacts beginning at the product origination stage. All product-related environmental requirements are recorded and accounted for in both the product definition and its development in accordance with Siemens internal standard SN 36350. We systematically incorporate Design for Environment (DfE) aspects into the product origination process.

Key Environmental Performance Indicators Materials
