until I know how much you care TTP-2 for NVS

The two-day TTP Module 2, which follows TTP-1, (Teach in the way the child learns) is captured in the epigram (Student telling the teacher), I do not care how much you know, until I know how much you care. At the start of TTP-2, we look back at the learnings and implementation of TTP-1 and recap the main outcomes of TTP-1. The next session is on Self-esteem, in which we examine the nature of self-esteem, causes for low self-esteem and how to overcome low self-esteem. We conclude that unless teachers have high self-esteem, they will not encourage learning. Session 3 takes up Stress Management. In Session 4, we take up one of the roles of the Teacher as Mentor and How to Spot Talent. Here we invite teachers to reflect on the knowledge, attitude and skills required to be a good mentor of students. The purpose is to enable teachers to utilise their strengths to encourage weak students to improve and gifted students to excel. In TTP-1, teachers learn to recognise which communication and learning skills are their strengths and weaknesses, so that they adopt suitable teaching methods. In TTP-2, they learn to recognise the qualities of the heart: caring, love, the positive attitude. The final session is on the Need to Understand Child Psychology in which we explain the nature of the child, the basic stages of child development, pressures faced by children; concluding with tips that are summarised in the epigram, I do not care how much you know, until I know how much you care. As in TTP-1, ethical issues continue to be woven into the sessions, and are not treated separately as a session. If the TTP-2 is also residential, a cultural program may be held on the evening of the first day to illustrate the value of Learning by living together. TTP-2 also ends with the teachers preparing an Action Plan for each session. The overall methodology of training again discards the lecture method and upholds the participatory and interactive methodology, which emphasises the question-response approach and reflection. Since the core of TTP-2 is focussed on child psychology, the trainers encouraged teachers to become aware of and reflect upon their own childhood, adolescent and adult experiences in order to draw our suitable lessons while dealing with the behaviour, emotions and thoughts of students in the class-room. Class-size during training is restricted to 20. A few handouts and various activities are used during the training and Takeaway Material (the flip-charts in book form), may be given after the

training. A certificate of participation may be given to teachers attending. TTP-2 must be preceded by an intensive training workshop for the trainers of the teachers, which includes theory classes on child psychology and conducting mock-sessions. TTP-2 will be launched during 2010 for teachers from: - govt schools in Goa and two districts of Gujarat; - Navodaya Vidyalaya Samiti (NVS) schools - Jain educational institutions from eight states; - municipal schools in Navi Mumbai and Jalgaon, Maharashtra.
