Summer 2011

HOPE HORIZONS: Ch. 2

Hello Friends and Family!
Allow me to take this time to update you on how God has led me on to the next chapter in my life. Human impact locations
Washington, D.C., USA June 2006
Here I served in soup kitchens and cleaned up an after school daycare. We are taking a dance break in the picture. This trip ignited my missions passion.

Liverpool, England July 2007

Here I served on an evangelical sailboat called the Next Wave. I saw God in another country and got a firm grasp of the ability of the Holy Spirit to move peoples hearts.

Sopron, Hungary August 2007 & 2008

Serving the missionaries of Christian Associates, my team and I ran a daycare for the kids while their parents were in a conference. I was able to grow my network and see Gods global movement.

Yaound, Cameroon August 2008 Many of you joined me last summer on my service trip to South Africa through prayer and financial assistance, and I want to thank you. God used you in a unique way last summer! I built amazing relationships with Lourens and Elsa Maritz (pictured above) and many other individuals in their community. I am excited to see how God will use those friendships for future investment in South Africa. He has already given me opportunities to write about my experiences, which are on my blog: trevinhoekzema.blogspot.com. As my heart for South Africa and the development of poor communities has grown, so has my involvement with human impact organizations. The chart is a list of those experiences.
Here we served a group of missionaries like we did in Hungary, but in a completely different culture, a time for me to rely on God and see His desires for people in need.

Brussels, Belgium July 2009

My experience with Serve the City started here. I served along side a team from SA and experienced community development through service. All while increasing my abilities as a leader.

He will give you all you need from day to day if you make the Kingdom of God your primary concern. Luke 12:31 (NIV)

A Network of ServiceBringing Hope to Local Communities

I am always amazed when I think back on how God has used me to further his kingdom. After some quick math, some of you have been on this journey with me for an entire seven years! Again, God has used you in a very unique way. As each of those experiences shown above led into the next one, I find myself making decisions everyday to progress toward a life of social and spiritual impact. At the University of Maryland, I created a major that just got approved! (It took a year of planning and writing). I am officially majoring in Community Economic Development. The major will give me the tools to positively affect developing communities around the world through sustainable means. This summer, I have the opportunity to start making an impact locally in Baltimore, Maryland.

Summer 2011

Interning with Serve Greater Baltimore and The Ember Cast, Inc.
God gave me the opportunity to intern with Serve Greater Baltimore (servegreaterbaltimore.org) this summer through a personal connection. Each summer, they organize a service week called Serve the City Baltimore. This is modeled like and affiliated with Serve the City Brussels and Stellenbosch, focusing on community investment through service. The service week this summer is from July 25th to July 30th. My job is to help network with volunteers, organizations, and donors to produce the most cost effective and most impactful experience possible. I am working with the other intern, Brian Wilcox, a good friend, and our boss, Patrick Donohue, youth pastor at Chapelgate Presbyterian Church. If you have any desire to volunteer, suggest an organization, or partner with Serve Greater Baltimore, please contact me! I would love to talk. A conversation dreaming about how to impact Baltimore more effectively is what I seek out daily. At the same time, I am interning with one of my mentors, Tony Sheng. My missions experiences have all been created, lead, or influenced by Tony, making him a catalyst for my development of a missional mindset. This fact has had a huge impact on my goals in my life. Apart from the internship, I have held a position as a Guide with The Ember Cast for the past two years. This has provided excellent experience and hands-on service leading opportunities in Philadelphia, Salisbury, and around the Howard County area. This summer, it will take me to Orlando, Florida and this fall it will take me to Detroit, Michigan.

Middle School Camp in Orlando; Conference in Detroit

Tonys friend, Chris Marsden, staff member of Kensington Community Church in Orlando Florida, asked The Ember Cast to create and facilitate a camp focused on global missions for middle schoolers. Tony and I have spent a long time organizing a program that will leave the students with 1) a realization that they are not too young to make an impact, 2) an understanding of what the world really looks like, and 3) how they can be a missionary starting now. We will be serving the middle schoolers from June 25 to 29. Since we will not be on site for the entire camp week, several local and not-so-local friends of Ember sent us videos explaining their investment and missional impact in their communities. I will also be attending a conference in September with Ember. It is titled M. The conference is centered on accelerating the spread of apostolic ethos among future-oriented, christ-following leaders. Please check out theimn.com for the list of speakers, all of who have written powerful books on global impact. We will be in Detroit from September 27 to 29.
Both of these events and my internships have the potential to be powerful experiences but they are not possible without your support- specifically your prayers. Please email me so I can give you updates on prayer requests over these next couple months. If you feel lead to support me financially, you can contact me or write a check payable to The Ember Cast, Inc, sending it in the enclosed envelope. All financial support is tax deductible and you will receive a receipt in the mail for your records. I can email you the information for an electronic donation, too. I must raise $1,500 by July 1st (includes airplane tickets, room & board, and internship costs). If you would like a breakdown of costs, just let me know. Any donation you can make, large or small, will be extremely helpful. Together, we can continue to impact the world. Thank you for your amazing support and God bless!
