TEN DEFINITION OF DEVELOPMENT DEVELOPMENT is a process of structural societal change.

Thomas (2000, 2004) refers to this meaning of development as a process of historical change. This view, of structural transformation and long-term transformations of economies and societies, as Gore noted, is one that predominated in the 1950s and 1960s in particular. Today, one might argue that this denition of development is emphasized by the academic or research part of the development community but that there is less emphasis on this perspective in the practitioner part of the development community (as has already been broached in our Introduction). DEVELOPMENT is a process directed at outcome encapsulating improve standards of living and grater capacity self-reliance in economics that are technically more complex and more dependents on global integration than before. DEVELOPMENT has been defined differently by various scholars depending in the context the term is used. It has been defined to refer to transforming of the peoples ways of living/doing things for the better (Advanced Oxford Learners Dictionary, 2006). Development involves changing peoples attitudes positively. It is also defined as a specified state of growth/advancement. In this context, development means positive transformation/ change of the peoples ways of living, attitudes, behaviors among others as a result of their accessing relevant, adequate and timely information services courtesy of the prevailing digital age DEVELOPMENT is a complex issue, with many different and sometimes contentious definitions. A basic perspective equates development with economic growth. The United Nations development Programme uses a more detailed definition- according to them development is 'to lead long and healthy lives, to be knowledgeable, to have access to the resources needed for a decent standard of living and to be able to participate in the life of the community.

DEVELOPMENT describes the growth of humans throughout the lifespan, from conception to death. The scientific study of human development seeks to understand and explain how and why people change throughout life. This includes all aspects of human growth, including physical, emotional, intellectual, social, perceptual, and personality development. DEVELOPMENT is any activity which helps us be more effective and learn. Attending a formal training course is only one type of development. DEVELOPMENT examines, discusses and aspires to find the best possible ways to transform and intentionally shape economies and societies, with the aim to modernise them and achieve human progress and prosperity. The act of development involves the management of intentional societal and economic changes driving the fulfillment of that aim.

Development is also the process of working up an idea for a film from its
earliest conception to the point at which it gets funded to go into production. It can be a mysterious process, because heres no set amount of time that it takes to realise a project; it can range from months to years.

DEVELOPMENT is about improving quality of life and ensuring everyone has the choice in what that life looks like. These choices are broadened through the joint effort of local people, governments, international bodies and a range of civil society organizations including NGOs, community organizations, churches and religious groups. Good development is lead by those living in poverty and tackles the inter-related causes of poverty. It works for long-term change, not quick-fixes.

DEVELOPMENT is also the process of adding improvements to a parcel of land, such as grading, subdivisions, drainage, access, roads, utilities.
