A fantastic weekend
Thousands ock to D.C. for 36th annual Capital Pride
By LOU CHIBBARO JR. lchibbaro@washblade.com
With the U.S. Capitol as a dramatic backdrop, tens of thousands of LGBT people and their friends and families jammed Pennsylvania Avenue on Sunday for the District of Columbias 36th annual Capital Pride Festival. One day earlier, D.C. Mayor Vincent Gray and 10 members of the 13-member D.C. City Council joined dozens of LGBT groups, colorful oats, marching bands, and thousands of individual marchers in the annual Capital Pride Parade, which snaked its way along city streets lined with thousands of spectators. Gray also spoke at Sundays festival before introducing the days lead entertainer, Broadway actress and singer Jennifer Holliday, who debuted her new single Magic, marking the songs word premiere. Although city ofcials and police no longer provide ofcial crowd estimates for large-scale events, Capital Pride organizers said they believe between 200,000 and 250,000 people turned out for the parade and festival. Everything was absolutely fantastic, said Capital Pride spokesperson Scott Lusk. All of our community partners and volunteers and attendees showed up in great numbers and with great enthusiasm. It was an absolute fantastic weekend. Eighteen-year-old Tiffany Johnson from Southeast D.C., who stood with a group of friends near the festivals main stage just before Holliday began her performance, said this years festival represented the rst time she had

FDA-Approved Patient Labeling Patient Information ATRIPLA (uh TRIP luh) Tablets ALERT: Find out about medicines that should NOT be taken with ATRIPLA. Please also read the section MEDICINES YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE WITH ATRIPLA. Generic name: efavirenz, emtricitabine and tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (eh FAH vih renz, em tri SIT uh bean and te NOE fo veer dye soe PROX il FYOU mar ate) Read the Patient Information that comes with ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) before you start taking it and each time you get a refill since there may be new information. This information does not take the place of talking to your healthcare provider about your medical condition or treatment. You should stay under a healthcare providers care when taking ATRIPLA. Do not change or stop your medicine without first talking with your healthcare provider. Talk to your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any questions about ATRIPLA. What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA? Some people who have taken medicine like ATRIPLA (which contains nucleoside analogs) have developed a serious condition called lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs or symptoms of lactic acidosis: You feel very weak or tired. You have unusual (not normal) muscle pain. You have trouble breathing. You have stomach pain with nausea and vomiting. You feel cold, especially in your arms and legs. You feel dizzy or lightheaded. You have a fast or irregular heartbeat. Some people who have taken medicines like ATRIPLA have developed serious liver problems called hepatotoxicity, with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get the following signs or symptoms of liver problems: Your skin or the white part of your eyes turns yellow (jaundice). Your urine turns dark. Your bowel movements (stools) turn light in color. You dont feel like eating food for several days or longer. You feel sick to your stomach (nausea). You have lower stomach area (abdominal) pain. You may be more likely to get lactic acidosis or liver problems if you are female, very overweight (obese), or have been taking nucleoside analog-containing medicines, like ATRIPLA, for a long time. If you also have hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection and you stop taking ATRIPLA, you may get a flare-up of your hepatitis. A flare-up is when the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before. Patients with HBV who stop taking ATRIPLA need close medical follow-up for several months, including medical exams and blood tests to check for hepatitis that could be getting worse. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of HBV, so you must discuss your HBV therapy with your healthcare provider. What is ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA contains 3 medicines, SUSTIVA (efavirenz), EMTRIVA (emtricitabine) and VIREAD (tenofovir disoproxil fumarate also called tenofovir DF) combined in one pill. EMTRIVA and VIREAD are HIV-1 (human immunodeficiency virus) nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) and SUSTIVA is an HIV-1 non-nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor (NNRTI). VIREAD and EMTRIVA are the components of TRUVADA. ATRIPLA can be used alone as a complete regimen, or in combination with other anti-HIV-1 medicines to treat people with HIV-1 infection. ATRIPLA is for adults age 18 and over. ATRIPLA has not been studied in children under age 18 or adults over age 65. HIV infection destroys CD4+ T cells, which are important to the immune system. The immune system helps fight infection. After a large number of T cells are destroyed, acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) develops. ATRIPLA helps block HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, a viral chemical in your body (enzyme) that is needed for HIV-1 to multiply. ATRIPLA lowers the amount of HIV-1 in the blood (viral load). ATRIPLA may also help to increase the number of T cells (CD4+ cells), allowing your immune system to improve. Lowering the amount of HIV-1 in the blood lowers the chance of death or infections that happen when your immune system is weak (opportunistic infections). Does ATRIPLA cure HIV-1 or AIDS? ATRIPLA does not cure HIV-1 infection or AIDS. The long-term effects of ATRIPLA are not known at this time. People taking ATRIPLA may still get opportunistic infections or other conditions that happen with HIV-1 infection. Opportunistic infections are infections that develop because the immune system is weak. Some of these conditions are pneumonia, herpes virus infections, and Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC) infection. It is very important that you see your healthcare provider regularly while taking ATRIPLA. Does ATRIPLA reduce the risk of passing HIV-1 to others? ATRIPLA has not been shown to lower your chance of passing HIV-1 to other people through sexual contact, sharing needles, or being exposed to your blood. Do not share needles or other injection equipment. Do not share personal items that can have blood or body fluids on them, like toothbrushes or razor blades.
ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Do not have any kind of sex without protection. Always practice safer sex by using a latex or polyurethane condom or other barrier to reduce the chance of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions, or blood. Who should not take ATRIPLA? Together with your healthcare provider, you need to decide whether ATRIPLA is right for you. Do not take ATRIPLA if you are allergic to ATRIPLA or any of its ingredients. The active ingredients of ATRIPLA are efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir DF. See the end of this leaflet for a complete list of ingredients. What should I tell my healthcare provider before taking ATRIPLA? Tell your healthcare provider if you: Are pregnant or planning to become pregnant (see What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA?). Are breast-feeding (see What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA?). Have kidney problems or are undergoing kidney dialysis treatment. Have bone problems. Have liver problems, including hepatitis B virus infection. Your healthcare provider may want to do tests to check your liver while you take ATRIPLA. Have ever had mental illness or are using drugs or alcohol. Have ever had seizures or are taking medicine for seizures. What important information should I know about taking other medicines with ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may change the effect of other medicines, including the ones for HIV-1, and may cause serious side effects. Your healthcare provider may change your other medicines or change their doses. Other medicines, including herbal products, may affect ATRIPLA. For this reason, it is very important to let all your healthcare providers and pharmacists know what medications, herbal supplements, or vitamins you are taking. MEDICINES YOU SHOULD NOT TAKE WITH ATRIPLA The following medicines may cause serious and life-threatening side effects when taken with ATRIPLA. You should not take any of these medicines while taking ATRIPLA: Vascor (bepridil), Propulsid (cisapride), Versed (midazolam), Orap (pimozide), Halcion (triazolam), ergot medications (for example, Wigraine and Cafergot). ATRIPLA also should not be used with Combivir (lamivudine/zidovudine), EMTRIVA, Epivir, Epivir-HBV (lamivudine), Epzicom (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine), Trizivir (abacavir sulfate/lamivudine/zidovudine), SUSTIVA, TRUVADA, or VIREAD. Vfend (voriconazole) should not be taken with ATRIPLA since it may lose its effect or may increase the chance of having side effects from ATRIPLA. Do not take St. Johns wort (Hypericum perforatum), or products containing St. Johns wort with ATRIPLA. St. Johns wort is an herbal product sold as a dietary supplement. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are taking or are planning to take St. Johns wort. Taking St. Johns wort may decrease ATRIPLA levels and lead to increased viral load and possible resistance to ATRIPLA or cross-resistance to other anti-HIV-1 drugs. ATRIPLA should not be used with HEPSERA (adefovir dipivoxil). It is also important to tell your healthcare provider if you are taking any of the following: Fortovase, Invirase (saquinavir), Biaxin (clarithromycin), Noxafil (posaconazole), or Sporanox (itraconazole); these medicines may need to be replaced with another medicine when taken with ATRIPLA. Calcium channel blockers such as Cardizem or Tiazac (diltiazem), Covera HS or Isoptin (verapamil) and others; Crixivan (indinavir), Selzentry (maraviroc); the immunosuppressant medicines cyclosporine (Gengraf, Neoral, Sandimmune, and others), Prograf (tacrolimus), or Rapamune (sirolimus); Methadone; Mycobutin (rifabutin); Rifampin; cholesterol-lowering medicines such as Lipitor (atorvastatin), Pravachol (pravastatin sodium), and Zocor (simvastatin); or Zoloft (sertraline); these medicines may need to have their dose changed when taken with ATRIPLA. Videx, Videx EC (didanosine); tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) may increase the amount of didanosine in your blood, which could result in more side effects. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and didanosine together. Also, the dose of didanosine may need to be changed. Reyataz (atazanavir sulfate) or Kaletra (lopinavir/ritonavir); these medicines may increase the amount of tenofovir DF (a component of ATRIPLA) in your blood, which could result in more side effects. Reyataz is not recommended with ATRIPLA. You may need to be monitored more carefully if you are taking ATRIPLA and Kaletra together. Also, the dose of Kaletra may need to be changed. Medicine for seizures [for example, Dilantin (phenytoin), Tegretol (carbamazepine), or phenobarbital]; your healthcare provider may want to switch you to another medicine or check drug levels in your blood from time to time. These are not all the medicines that may cause problems if you take ATRIPLA. Be sure to tell your healthcare provider about all medicines that you take. Keep a complete list of all the prescription and nonprescription medicines as well as any herbal remedies that you are taking, how much you take, and how often you take them. Make a new list when medicines or herbal remedies are added or stopped, or if the dose changes. Give copies of this list to all of your healthcare providers and pharmacists every time you visit your healthcare provider or fill a prescription. This will give your healthcare provider a complete picture of the medicines you use. Then he or she can decide the best approach for your situation.

ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) How should I take ATRIPLA? Take the exact amount of ATRIPLA your healthcare provider prescribes. Never change the dose on your own. Do not stop this medicine unless your healthcare provider tells you to stop. You should take ATRIPLA on an empty stomach. Swallow ATRIPLA with water. Taking ATRIPLA at bedtime may make some side effects less bothersome. Do not miss a dose of ATRIPLA. If you forget to take ATRIPLA, take the missed dose right away, unless it is almost time for your next dose. Do not double the next dose. Carry on with your regular dosing schedule. If you need help in planning the best times to take your medicine, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist. If you believe you took more than the prescribed amount of ATRIPLA, contact your local poison control center or emergency room right away. Tell your healthcare provider if you start any new medicine or change how you take old ones. Your doses may need adjustment. When your ATRIPLA supply starts to run low, get more from your healthcare provider or pharmacy. This is very important because the amount of virus in your blood may increase if the medicine is stopped for even a short time. The virus may develop resistance to ATRIPLA and become harder to treat. Your healthcare provider may want to do blood tests to check for certain side effects while you take ATRIPLA. What should I avoid while taking ATRIPLA? Women should not become pregnant while taking ATRIPLA and for 12 weeks after stopping it. Serious birth defects have been seen in the babies of animals and women treated with efavirenz (a component of ATRIPLA) during pregnancy. It is not known whether efavirenz caused these defects. Tell your healthcare provider right away if you are pregnant. Also talk with your healthcare provider if you want to become pregnant. Women should not rely only on hormone-based birth control, such as pills, injections, or implants, because ATRIPLA may make these contraceptives ineffective. Women must use a reliable form of barrier contraception, such as a condom or diaphragm, even if they also use other methods of birth control. Efavirenz, a component of ATRIPLA, may remain in your blood for a time after therapy is stopped. Therefore, you should continue to use contraceptive measures for 12 weeks after you stop taking ATRIPLA. Do not breast-feed if you are taking ATRIPLA. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommend that mothers with HIV not breast-feed because they can pass the HIV through their milk to the baby. Also, ATRIPLA may pass through breast milk and cause serious harm to the baby. Talk with your healthcare provider if you are breast-feeding. You should stop breast-feeding or may need to use a different medicine. Taking ATRIPLA with alcohol or other medicines causing similar side effects as ATRIPLA, such as drowsiness, may increase those side effects. Do not take any other medicines, including prescription and nonprescription medicines and herbal products, without checking with your healthcare provider. Avoid doing things that can spread HIV-1 infection since ATRIPLA does not stop you from passing the HIV-1 infection to others. What are the possible side effects of ATRIPLA? ATRIPLA may cause the following serious side effects: Lactic acidosis (buildup of an acid in the blood). Lactic acidosis can be a medical emergency and may need to be treated in the hospital. Call your healthcare provider right away if you get signs of lactic acidosis. (See What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?) Serious liver problems (hepatotoxicity), with liver enlargement (hepatomegaly) and fat in the liver (steatosis). Call your healthcare provider right away if you get any signs of liver problems. (See What is the most important information I should know about ATRIPLA?) Flare-ups of hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection, in which the disease suddenly returns in a worse way than before, can occur if you have HBV and you stop taking ATRIPLA. Your healthcare provider will monitor your condition for several months after stopping ATRIPLA if you have both HIV-1 and HBV infection and may recommend treatment for your HBV. ATRIPLA is not approved for the treatment of hepatitis B virus infection. If you have advanced liver disease and stop treatment with ATRIPLA, the flare-up of hepatitis B may cause your liver function to decline. Serious psychiatric problems. A small number of patients may experience severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior while taking ATRIPLA. Some patients have thoughts of suicide and a few have actually committed suicide. These problems may occur more often in patients who have had mental illness. Contact your healthcare provider right away if you think you are having these psychiatric symptoms, so your healthcare provider can decide if you should continue to take ATRIPLA. Kidney problems (including decline or failure of kidney function). If you have had kidney problems in the past or take other medicines that can cause kidney problems, your healthcare provider should do regular blood tests to check your kidneys. Symptoms that may be related to kidney problems include a high volume of urine, thirst, muscle pain, and muscle weakness. Other serious liver problems. Some patients have experienced serious liver problems including liver failure resulting in transplantation or death. Most of these serious side effects occurred in patients with a chronic liver disease such as hepatitis infection, but there have also been a few reports in patients without any existing liver disease.
ATRIPLA (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir disoproxil fumarate) Changes in bone mineral density (thinning bones). Laboratory tests show changes in the bones of patients treated with tenofovir DF, a component of ATRIPLA. Some HIV patients treated with tenofovir DF developed thinning of the bones (osteopenia) which could lead to fractures. If you have had bone problems in the past, your healthcare provider may need to do tests to check your bone mineral density or may prescribe medicines to help your bone mineral density. Additionally, bone pain and softening of the bone (which may contribute to fractures) may occur as a consequence of kidney problems. Common side effects: Patients may have dizziness, headache, trouble sleeping, drowsiness, trouble concentrating, and/or unusual dreams during treatment with ATRIPLA. These side effects may be reduced if you take ATRIPLA at bedtime on an empty stomach. They also tend to go away after you have taken the medicine for a few weeks. If you have these common side effects, such as dizziness, it does not mean that you will also have serious psychiatric problems, such as severe depression, strange thoughts, or angry behavior. Tell your healthcare provider right away if any of these side effects continue or if they bother you. It is possible that these symptoms may be more severe if ATRIPLA is used with alcohol or mood altering (street) drugs. If you are dizzy, have trouble concentrating, or are drowsy, avoid activities that may be dangerous, such as driving or operating machinery. Rash may be common. Rashes usually go away without any change in treatment. In a small number of patients, rash may be serious. If you develop a rash, call your healthcare provider right away. Other common side effects include tiredness, upset stomach, vomiting, gas, and diarrhea. Other possible side effects with ATRIPLA: Changes in body fat. Changes in body fat develop in some patients taking anti-HIV-1 medicine. These changes may include an increased amount of fat in the upper back and neck (buffalo hump), in the breasts, and around the trunk. Loss of fat from the legs, arms, and face may also happen. The cause and long-term health effects of these fat changes are not known. Skin discoloration (small spots or freckles) may also happen with ATRIPLA. In some patients with advanced HIV infection (AIDS), signs and symptoms of inflammation from previous infections may occur soon after anti-HIV treatment is started. It is believed that these symptoms are due to an improvement in the bodys immune response, enabling the body to fight infections that may have been present with no obvious symptoms. If you notice any symptoms of infection, please inform your doctor immediately. Additional side effects are inflammation of the pancreas, allergic reaction (including swelling of the face, lips, tongue, or throat), shortness of breath, pain, stomach pain, weakness and indigestion. Tell your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you notice any side effects while taking ATRIPLA. Contact your healthcare provider before stopping ATRIPLA because of side effects or for any other reason. This is not a complete list of side effects possible with ATRIPLA. my feet wet, learning that the org at the time was running a rather large decit. After booking Perper on the Signorile show, the producers reached out and arranged to have Barrios on the following day to respond to the statements that had been made. However, when GLAAD later attempted to arrange to have Bitner join him on the Signorile show, the shows producers refused and the GLAAD team pulled out of the arrangement, opting to contact other media outlets and bloggers instead. Barrios insists that the nancial gures that Perper presented on the Signorile show were inaccurate and misleading, including a quote about a $14 million discrepancy after 2008, which Barrios says is the result of an IRS reporting requirement of a major multi-million dollar bequest by the late Ric Weiland of Microsoft that was dispersed over seven years. GLAAD insists that it has righted its nancial footing thanks to cuts made early in Barrios term, though Ferraro also disputes Perpers claim that six senior staff members left the organization since Jarretts start. GLAAD insists it was only three, with another just having left a few months ago. In 2009, there was a substantial decit I think it was like $1.2 million, Barrios said. Last year, we cut the operating decit to $300,000 shrunk it by about $900,000 and this year, Im happy to say, were running ahead of budget most notably, our national presenting sponsor has already renewed for next year. That typically doesnt happen until January. Its already happened for next year. Were very pleased. Our corporate revenues this
year are substantially higher than last year, which were higher than the year before. Perpers main purpose for appearing on Signoriles show, however, was to question the reasoning behind GLAADs unexpected statement voicing support for the AT&T/T-Mobile merger. GLAAD joined unions, advocacy organizations and other LGBT-specic organizations like the National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce and Out At Work in supporting the merger. These three organizations joined the NAACP, and the National Education Association in pushing the FCC for the merger. Perper points to this as evidence that AT&T may have bought inuence with these non-prots to advocate for the merger with the FCC. Hours after his conversation with the Blade, Barrios appeared on Chicagos Feast of Fun podcast with Marc Felion and Fausto Fernos. The issue of GLAADs curious support of the AT&T/T-Mobile merger and Perpers statements regarding that merger soon came up, and Barrios seemed to change his story on a long-forgotten episode from more than a year ago when GLAAD released two letters regarding the principles of net-neutrality and expressed support for expanding Internet access. The second letter was later retracted. At the time, Barrios wrote the FCC asking the letter to be removed from the public record, stating that hed not given his permission for the letter to be submitted and that the signature is not in my hand. However, while speaking with Feast of Fun, his story seemed to change.

ever attended Capital Pride. Its just awesome, she said. Its just so great to be able to come out to something like this. Angelo Jimenez, 54, a resident of Richmond, Va., said this years festival marked the 31st consecutive year he has traveled to D.C. to attend the citys Pride festival. I came for the rst time in 1980 and havent missed a single year, he said. That tells you how much this means to me. Other festival attendees who approached the Blades booth identied themselves as residents of states up and down the mid-Atlantic region as well as from the D.C. metropolitan area. Gray and a contingent of city ofcials, including gay activist Jeffrey Richardson, director of the citys Ofce of GLBT Affairs, walked along the entire parade route Saturday, which began at 22nd and P Streets, N.W., near Dupont Circle, and ended nearly two miles later at 14th and N Streets, N.W., near Thomas Circle. Most of the Council members, including gay Council members David Catania (I-At-Large) and Jim Graham (D-Ward 1), also walked or rode in cars along the full parade route. The other Council members participating in the parade included Council Chair Kwame Brown (D-At-Large) and Council
members Phil Mendelson (D-At-Large), Michael Brown (D-At-Large), Vincent Orange (D-At-Large), Jack Evans (D-Ward 2), Mary Cheh (D-Ward 3), Muriel Bowser (D-Ward 4), and Tommy Wells (D-Ward 6). Gray had invited the Council members to join his contingent, which he named the D.C. 41, in recognition of the 41 city ofcials and activists, including Gray and six Council members, who were arrested in April outside a Senate ofce building near the Capitol in a protest against congressional intrusion in D.C. affairs. But most of the Council members chose to march or ride in their own contingents just behind the mayors contingent. Following closely behind the D.C. elected ofcials contingents was Adam Ebbin, the only openly gay member of the Virginia House of Delegates, who is running for a seat in the Virginia Senate from Alexandria. The parade was led by an escort of D.C. police cars staffed by members of the departments Gay & Lesbian Liaison Unit. Following closely behind the police escort was a contingent of leaders and supporters of the Trevor Project, a nationally recognized organization that works to prevent LGBT teen suicide. Capital Pride selected the Trevor Project contingent as the parades grand marshal.

meeting of the Massachusetts Log Cabin Club with his then-Republican opponent, John Lakian. The meeting between Republican candidates and the gay group was hailed as a milestone for LGBT rights in Massachusetts. I will ght against discrimination of any kind throughout our system, Romney was quoted as saying. I dont know exactly where you legislate and where you dont legislate or how you make that work and where you dont. But I am not limiting my support of equal rights for all people just to [U.S. Rep.] Barney Franks legislation in the area of employment. I would be happy to continue the ght in other areas such as credit and housing. Romney reportedly touted that Bain & Company, a Boston-based management consulting rm whose board he chaired, had explicit directions regarding equal employment opportunity in hiring and promotions. But Kara Suffredini, executive director of MassEquality, said the support that Romney expressed for ENDA in 1994 doesnt square with his later actions as governor and predicted he wouldnt keep his promise to support the legislation. Thats all the same stuff that he said when he ran for governor in 2002, and then once he was governor, I mean, do a Google search, and youll nd out how quickly he positioned himself as antiLGBT in order to benet his own political career, she said. Suffredini predicted that Romney would be pretty bad for the LGBT community as a whole as president because of the inconsistency with which he addressed LGBT issues as governor. I would say based on his record as governor here that the only thing consistent about Romneys relationship with the LGBT community is how
inconsistent he is, Suffredini said. Suffredini said during his campaign as governor, Romney pledged to sign a civil rights bill for the LGBT community. However upon taking ofce, she said he took several anti-gay actions, such as abolishing a governors commission on LGBT youth, which the legislature later reinstated; rescinding an executive order prohibiting discrimination based on sexual orientation; and discouraging the Massachusetts Department of Public Health from releasing data on public health disparities. Romney also struck a markedly different tone on Dont Ask, Dont Tell on Monday during the Republican presidential debate compared to what he expressed in his 1994 letter to Log Cabin. I believe it should have been kept in place until conict was over, Romney said, invoking an argument that opponents of repeal employed when legislation that would end the militarys gay ban was pending before Congress. Romneys position on ENDA could become a more prominent issue as he advances through the Republican primaries. Romney remains the front-runner in the Republican presidential eld among potential participants in the early primaries. According to recent polls from Public Policy Polling, Romney leads by six points in Iowa, 23 in New Hampshire, nine in South Carolina and 15 in Nevada. Further, Romney could be the Republican presidential candidate who has the strongest chance against President Obama in 2012. According to a Washington Post/ABC News poll published last week, Romney leads Obama in a head-to-head contest by a margin of 49-46. R. Clarke Cooper, executive director of the National Log Cabin Republicans, said his organization would hold Romney
to his promises on ENDA should he win the Republican nomination and go on to challenge President Obama in 2012. Gov. Romney recently stated on CNN he opposes discrimination and supports equal rights in employment, Cooper said. We hope he would stand by his pledge from 17 years ago to prevent discrimination in the workplace and support ENDA. While Romneys position on most LGBT issues may have changed over the years, on one issue he has maintained consistent opposition: same-sex marriage. During his interview on CNN last week, Romney reiterated his previously stated opposition to same-sex marriage. What happened was that the gay community changed as to what they wanted, Romney said during the CNN interview. When I ran for governor, one of the big issues was marriage, gay marriage. My opponent said she would sign a bill in favor of gay marriage. I said I would not, that I opposed same-sex marriage. At the same time, I would advance the if you will the efforts not to discriminate against people who are gay. According to Bay WIndows, Romney stated his opposition to same-sex marriage at the Log Cabin forum 17 years ago when he was seeking the Republican nomination in the U.S Senate race. I stand with Gov. [Bill] Weld on that, he was quoted as saying, and say that in my view it is not appropriate to authorize legally same-sex marriages and I will continue to endorse that view. In 2003, After the Massachusetts State Supreme Court ruled in favor of marriage rights for gay couples, Romney backed various state measures that would have rolled back marriage rights for gay couples in the Bay State. Romney also voiced support for a U.S. constitutional amendment known as the Federal Marriage Amendment, which
would ban same-sex marriages throughout the country. Additionally, Romney renewed enforcement of a 1913 law preventing out-of-state couples from marrying in Massachusetts to prevent gay couples from coming into the Bay State to wed. The law has since been repealed by the state Legislature. Suffredini recalled that as governor, Romney positioned himself as a national leader during this time when the rst state in the nation was attempting to advance marriage rights for gay couples. He did everything he could here to prevent marriage equality even going so far as to resurrect what we call here the 1913 law, basically an anti-miscegnation law, which hadnt been enforced in decades, Suffredini said. He resurrected it specically in his words to prevent the spread of same-sex marriage to other states, and what it did was it prevented gays and lesbians from other states from coming here and marrying. Fred Sainz, the Human Rights Campaigns vice president of communications, said Romneys frequent position changes on LGBT issues make it difcult to predict how friendly to the LGBT community hed be as president. Its hard to know which Mitt Romney will show up, Sainz said. Hes gone back and forth more on issues of equality than a revolving door at a hotel and appears willing to say whatever the audience in front of him will want to hear. Still, some remain hopeful that Romney will continue his support for ENDA. Sainz said the decision for Republican candidates on whether or not to support ENDA should be easy. It should be a no-brainer for Republican presidential candidates to support legislation that allows all Americans to work and support their families, Sainz said.
State Senate traditionally has exercised almost unilateral power to decide whether to bring bills to the oor for a vote. I believe that votes will be there for marriage equality if the vote happens, the New York Times quoted Cuomo as saying on Monday. Brian Brown, president of the National Organization for Marriage, which lobbies against same-sex marriage bills across the country, has stated on the groups website that he remains condent that opponents will retain enough votes to defeat the bill. What the governor is attempting to do is create a myth of inevitability, he told the Times. I dont think the votes are there. But supporters say momentum for
passing the bill was growing during the past week. On Monday, three Democratic senators whose support was uncertain earlier in the year announced they will now vote for the measure. Earlier this week two Republican senators announced their support for the bill. With all but one of the Senates 30 Democrats saying they will vote for the bill, just three Republicans are needed to ensure its passage if Skelos allows the bill to come to the oor for a vote. With two Republicans already lined up, supporters say they expect at least one and likely two more Republicans to vote for the measure. A coalition of LGBT organizations campaigning for the marriage bill has been working full-time over the past several weeks to line up support for the bill
in the Senate, according to Marty Rouse, national eld director for the Human Rights Campaign, one of the coalitions partners along with the Empire State Pride Agenda and other groups, including Log Cabin Republicans. Phone banks have taken place in several places across the state, Rouse said in an HRC blog posting. Field organizers with clip boards and postcards in hand have talked to voters at shopping centers, on main streets, on college campuses, at farmers markets, festivals and beaches, in places of worship, in nightclubs, on train platforms and on doorsteps, he said. It is this person-to-person conversation that is having an impact. In a separate development, the Assembly voted 78-53 on Tuesday
to pass the Gender Expression NonDiscrimination Act, which would amend the states non-discrimination law to protect transgender people from discrimination in the areas of employment, housing, public accommodations, education and credit. The action marked the third time the Assembly has passed a transgender non-discrimination measure. However, similar to past years, political observers in Albany expect the bill to die in the GOPcontrolled Senate, where a clear majority of senators opposes it. Supporters of the marriage bill were hopeful that President Obama would join in their celebration of its passage on June 23, when the president is scheduled to attend an LGBT fundraiser for his reelection campaign in Manhattan.

PRESIDENT OBAMA should stop pushing policies that mirror Republican initiatives and instead focus on putting Americans back to work.
WASHINGTON BLADE FILE PHOTO BY MICHAEL KEY
President Obama needs an economic team that stops pushing policies mirroring Republicans or he just may be responsible for his own loss in 2012, which would be disastrous for the nation. We must push for progress on LGBT issues but it is his entire platform that will get him elected. The philosophy that government should stop spending money in a recession has been proven wrong time and time again. Keynes, Krugman, other economists and even Ronald Reagan understood we need to deal with the decit, but putting people back to work comes rst. Obama inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression. But unless he proposes policies that will create new jobs now he may be blamed for it. Republicans have hoodwinked people into thinking that cutting the decit is more important than getting them back to work. We need to change that perception and Obama has one year to do something. Because the economic mess was created by George W. Bush and Republicans it is disheartening to hear the Obama campaign say they havent decided on a theme. It seems simple, Do you want to go back to the destructive policies of Bush, or continue our climb out of this recession into a better future? Democrats shouldnt try to out-do Republicans by cutting government jobs, salaries and federal programs that help states and localities meet their budgets. Democrats must explain in simple language how we got into this mess and whats needed today to get people back to work. Obama should say: In 2001 George Bush sold you a bill of goods. He said cutting taxes for the rich below what they were in the Clinton years would produce a gain of 5.5 million jobs. Now compare: in eight years Bush created fewer than 1 million
Obama inherited the worst economy since the Great Depression. But unless he proposes policies that will create new jobs now he may be blamed for it.
new jobs, Bill Clinton created 21 million. The Bush Republican policies led to 10 percent unemployment. We are just beginning to climb out of that mess. George Bush started the war in Iraq and told us we didnt have to pay for it. Only our brave young men and women in the military and their families are paying. We ended up with a trillion dollar decit left to our children. George Bush and Republicans left you and me the worst economy since the Great Depression. We knew recovery wouldnt be easy but together we are beginning that recovery. In the past year we added 2 million jobs, not nearly enough, but twice as many as President Bush added in the entire eight years of his presidency. Today the Republican Party wants to continue cutting taxes for the rich and give new tax breaks to companies like General Electric who owed zero in federal taxes last year. How much did you pay? Republicans have found a new way to cut the decit on the backs of the poor and middle class. They want to end Medicare as you know it and instead help you pay with a voucher. They say dont worry, be happy it wont hurt seniors today, just those under 55. I dont know about you but I care about the next generations. If our great nation cant guarantee health care for its seniors we should be ashamed of ourselves. The Republican Party is holding you hostage. They threaten the good name of the United States of America by suggesting we default on our debts unless we cut federal programs for job training, education and others, which will eliminate the jobs of policemen, teachers and other workers who will then join you on the unemployment lines. The Republican motto should be misery loves company. Republicans sold you a bill of goods and still want to cut the decit by putting more money in the hands of the rich, which will then trickle down in the form of jobs. There is a saying, Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. I want to cut the decit. My way is to cut programs but continue to spend what is necessary to put you back to work now. When you are working, supporting your family, paying your taxes and mortgages the decit will start coming down. The second part of my decit reduction plan is to make the rich and corporations pay their fair share. To win in 2012 President Obama must lead. The people are longing for a strong leader and it clearly isnt history buff Sarah Palin, pass Newt Gingrich, Holy Roller Rick Santorum, ip-opper Mitt Romney or Tea Party Queen Michele Bachmann.

When he opened the fondly recalled former Dakota nightclub and restaurant in 1987, popular with gay and lesbian patrons, it was the rst establishment granted a license under revised city regulations that created the inappropriately named Voluntary Agreement process granting extraordinary powers of intervention to the few. Incredibly, to this day as few as ve people forming an ad hoc protest group can halt the licensing process and force a business into negotiations regarding any aspect of operation. The process forces businesses to capitulate to the demands of small and un-

Lets start pushing the boundaries of Pride beyond slogans and superciality.
makeover? And what does that even mean? What does Pride really mean? Part of the answer was on display at last weekends Capital Pride celebration. Pride is what you saw on the faces of those who marched, who mingled, cheered, and simply showed up. There was pride in numbers and in diversity. There was the pride that comes from living with dignity and authenticity. Indeed, thats what the rst Pride celebrations were all about. In a bygone era where the esteem and self worth of LGBT men and women were perpetually under assault, there was a need to publicly demonstrate gay pride. There was a need to tell the world, through visibility and strength in numbers that the value of human kind could not be trampled by bigotry, hate, shame and exclusion. It was those heady protest marches that formed the basis of the future Pride movement and of the celebrations we know of and partake in today. However, as the community began to break down societal barriers, to make gains and take its place at the table, gay men lost an understanding of another side to the meaning of Pride. Beyond rainbow ags and bumper decals, Pride should also stem from our actions. We forget that sometimes. Having lived from Boston to Austin, Texas to Toronto, Ive witnessed and experienced how gay men can behave. It isnt always pretty. In a culture of A-lists and attitude, where chiseled bodies set the standards by which we are judged, some gay men have forgotten that real Pride is born from within, and not in a gym. Nothing wrong with working out. I do it all the time. But lets start pushing the boundaries of Pride beyond slogans and superciality.
With the celebrations having just wrapped up for another year, nows the time to put Pride to work. Make good on your longstanding intention to volunteer. Donate to a cause thats dear to you. Say thanks to an LGBT elder for setting in motion the civil rights our community has gained over the past 40 years. Im reminded of a line from one of my favorite Carly Simon tunes, Dont be afraid to change your attitude. Fear has never been part of the LGBT lexicon. If it were, there would never have been Pride festivities this past weekend. So go ahead. Next time youre at a bar or club, put a new spin on attitude. Smile to someone you dont even know. Yes, really. Its just a smile. You can do it. It may not feel like an extreme makeover, but you may just be making someones day, and changing someones elses attitude at the same time. And thats something to feel proud about.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT AND WHO WAS THE HARDEST PERSON TO TELL? Since 1997 and the hardest person to tell was my mother. WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO? Id have to say my dear friend, mentor and gay papa, playwright/directorAlan Sharpe. Not only is he an extremely talented artist in every aspect of the word, but hes a kind, patient, humble, graceful human being whose friendship I consider to be a gift that Im extremely grateful for.

WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND THE PHYSICAL WORLD? I have a very strong connection to and belief in the spiritual realm. The experiences Ive had in life (including but not limited to): discovering my connection with the God of my understanding, coming to grips with my sexuality, accepting who I am and loving myself inside and out have all assisted me in understanding and embracing the power of spirit. WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT MOVEMENT LEADERS? The most important piece of advice Id offer is something I have to continually remind myself: To take care of and advocate for yourself as much as you seek to advocate and take care of others. WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS HOT COALS FOR? My parents, the people I love who love and support me, and for my right to artistic expression, however it shows up. WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST? That were all shallow, that were all just about sex and the physical. WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT MOVIE? Jackies Back starring Jenifer Lewis. Its a [black] gay staple and its hilarious on so many different levels. It never gets old. WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED SOCIAL CUSTOM? Greeting someone with How you doing? when youre not really concerned with how Im doing. WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU MOST COVET? Each and every production, event and performance Ive created through my arts organization Brave Soul Collective I consider to be a trophy (of sorts) because with each one I pour my heart, soul, body, mind and money into making them happen. And to have other people show up and participate is a gift to and for me. WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN AT 18? How to articulate myself the way I do now through my work as an artist. At that point, I was still guring a lot of stuff out, so I wasnt yet able to readily access and express my feelings the way Im able to now. WHY WASHINGTON? Because after living here for nearly 16 years, its home to me now. This is where I came of age, came out, where I blossomed as a black gay man and artist and where I continue to ourish (for the time being) so Im goin with it.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST NIGHTSPOT, PAST OR PRESENT? I wouldnt know currently. Cant remember the last time I went out. Id say past, Tracks from 1996-1997. DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING. Im not one big on weddings to be quite honest. My dream wedding would be one that would be complete with lots of soul and jazz music and lots of cake. And the people I love being there to share the moment. WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU MOST PASSIONATE ABOUT? The arts, specically music, my rst love. It affects, informs and inuences everything I do. WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME WOULD YOU CHANGE?
Slavery
WHATS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE POP CULTURE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME? Growing up in the late 70s and particularly the 80s during the height of Michael Jacksons career. Its still hard to listen to some of his music from that time because it just reminds me that hes not with us (in the physical realm) anymore. ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST? On being an artist, on being authentic and coming from my heart in everything that I do (professionally and personally), passion, food, music and I insist on avoiding all reality television because I hate it. (With the exception of RuPauls Drag Race.) WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK POST OR TWEET? Both were posts plugging my upcoming production for the D.C. Black TheatreFestival, Smoke Screens: The Lies We Tell Ourselves (& Everyone Else) (Saturday at 8 p.m. at the Warehouse Theater, 645 New York Ave. N.W.) IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD THE TITLE BE? Unapolagetically ME: The Life of a Protagonist. IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO CHANGE SEXUAL ORIENTATION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO? Not a damn thing as it pertains to me.

Gay author Thomas Chorlton will be having a book reading, reception and signing for his latest book, The First American Republic 1774-1789: The First Fourteen American Presidents Before Washington at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at the Arts Club of Washington (2017 I St., N.W.). Chorltons book looks at the 14 presidents of the Continental Congress. These men functioned as head of state by signing all ofcial documents, receiving foreign visitors, representing the emerging nation at ofcial events and presiding over the congress deliberations. These 14 presidents were the giants of their age, says Chorlton, men of power, wealth and experience who led their new nation through extremely difcult days largely on the strength of their character. Chorlton is the former president of D.C.s Gertrude Stein Democratic Club and was the founding executive director of the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Democratic Clubs, the forerunner of the National Stonewall Democrats. Bootylicious
Woolly Mammoth production explores black gay experience with bold humor
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Woolly Mammoth is wrapping up its season-long exploration of race, gender and sexuality with playwright Robert OHaras Bootycandy. Comprised of 10 related vignettes, OHaras fearless and very funny new work dives right into what it means to be black and gay in America two subjects the 41-year-old playwright (hes also the productions director) has had a lifetime to consider. As the title suggests, Bootycandy (a childhood term for penis used by the playwrights mother and grandmother) confronts sexuality head on. Drawn loosely from OHaras past, his refreshingly bold scenes are full of off-color laughs and scathing satire, but they dont shy away from the heavier aspects of experience either. When we rst meet Sutter the plays imperfect hero and OHara stand-in played by Phillip James Brannon its the 70s. Hes a chatty, Superman underwear-clad kid who is endlessly fascinated with his own bootycandy, always wondering what to do with it, how to take care of it and what ways it might help bring peace to the world. His harried mother (Jessica Frances Dukes) isnt too sure what to make of her little boy, and as he grows older she remains equally mystied by his differentness. Fast forward a decade to Happy Meal and Sutter is a sullen Jackie Collins-reading teen. At the dinner table he interrupts his mothers loud talk to announce that a man followed him home from school. The revelation sets off a hilarious barrage of defeminizing remedies rattled off by his mother (this time played by Laiona Michelle) and well-meaning stepfather (Lance Coadie Williams) including no drama club, constant chores and throwing a ball. Through the humor, OHara (as playwright and director) and Brannons Sutter brilliantly atomize the scene with a mist of mystery and menace, hinting at the dangers that might come with the teens budding sexuality.

As the show moves forward, the little plays t satisfyingly together like pieces from a puzzle. An early scene features a few ghetto gossips hilariously dishing a young woman who has named her baby girl Genitalia. That same unfortunately named girl appears later in the play as a not-to-be-messed with, fully grown, butch lesbian (Michelle again). Bald and sleekly suited, she stands on a Cancun Beach annulling her commitment to the woman she no longer loves. Meanwhile, Sutters sexual odyssey continues. As he comes of age, he starts having sex with his closeted brother-inlaw (Sean Meehan). In a darker episode titled The Last Gay Play, Sutters chance meeting with a nutty and briey naked trick (also played by Meehan) presents him with an opportunity to get back at the world a little. Things get out of hand and the actors actually threaten to stop the show. OHara effortlessly shifts from urban theater circuit (also known as modern chitlin circuit) humor to heartrending, more nuanced material and everything in between. Some moments of note include Williams tour de force monologue as an over-the-top fundamentalist preacher with a secret. Later in the play, four black playwrights (including an adult Sutter) unwittingly come together for a workshop moderated by a clueless white moderator. In a bit of meta-theatrical fun, each of the playwrights purports to have written one of the shows segments. The biting comedy is performed on a shiny stage beneath a shimmery proscenium arch (compliments of Tom Kamm) by a truly marvelous ve-person ensemble who masterfully portray a much larger number of characters ranging in age, sexual orientation and in one actors case even gender. Kate Tuner Walker costumes the cast in spot on street clothes that perfectly place the action in the 70s, 80s, through to the present. With Bootycandy, OHara puts it out there. And while some of the scenes hit better than others, the play never for a split second lacks for feeling or fun.

Mind-numbing minutia
Untold Story of Queen offers too many details for casual fans
Roger Taylor remembers banging on his mothers pans as a child. He joined May in a band after seeing an ad in a local drum shop. And John Deacon, a relative late-comer, had gone to school to be an electrical engineer as a fall-back career, in case his musical career didnt pan out. And while May, Taylor and Deacon were playing together and with other musicians, growing their experience and honing their talents, they had one very exacting, particular fan: a roadie named Fred who liked to give them advice after their gigs (Mercury was gay and died of AIDS in 1991). With so much attention to detail, so many little tidbits for fans and so many memories it evokes, its hard to hate a book like Is This the Real Life? But its hard to love it, too. Author Mark Blake doesnt seem to have missed one single event in the lives of the men who were Queen, or the few women who were peripherally involved with those men. While some of those ner points make this book trivia heaven for Queen fans, much of it plods along: lengthy accounts of concert dates, musicians who came and went throughout the decades, people whom the four band members knew as children, and other minutiae that die-hard musicians and rabid followers will be mindful of, but that most of us will nd mind-numbing. If your iPod is lled with greatest hits and you couldnt look at this book without singing the title, Is This the Real Life? will be a royal treat for you. If youre not quixotic on Queen, though, just stomp away. And if youve already located your Queen on vinyl and are searching for a good place to curl up and reminisce, youll also want to nd Queen: The Ultimate Illustrated History of the Crown Kings of Rock by Phil Sutcliffe (Voyageur Press, 2011). Sports fans know how to make noise, but its not the cheers that raise the rafters during games, tournaments and playoffs. No, the stadium shakes at a sound that rattles the roof, supports the team and is awfully fun to do. Stomp-stomp-clap, and when your team wins, it gets better: theres the other half of the song to sing. You know where that tune came from. You might even remember where you rst heard it. Lets face it, fat gets a bad rap and most of us think that we should be avoiding fat at all costs. We fail to recognize that fat has redeeming qualities and is crucial to our diet and well being. But not all fat is created equal and it may seem difcult to disseminate the abundance of information on fat. First, it is important to know which fats you should be consuming and which fats you should avoid. Fat is essential to good health and each fat has a different effect on our body and more importantly on our blood cholesterol levels, which include LDL and HDL levels. Fat is necessary to keep our body temperature tempered, pad our organs from shock and as a reserve for times when we need extra calories fat is our storehouse. Fat is actually an excellent source for energy and aids in the transportation of vital fatsoluble vitamins and nutrients. However, most Americans consume too much fat, predominantly the unhealthier forms of fat. Unfortunately, many try extremely low-fat diets, which lead to deciencies. These deciencies can lead to scaly, dried skin and thinning hair. Choosing the right types of dietary fats to consume is one of the most important factors in reducing the risk of developing heart disease, says Tufts University researcher, Alice Lichtenstein. And the amount of fat we need is actually quite low at about 10 or 20 grams per day. The U.S. Department of Agricultures 2010 Dietary Guidelines recommend that adults get 20-35 percent of their calories from fats. At a minimum, we need at least 10 percent of our calories to come from fat. Saturated fat should compose less than 10 percent of overall calories. There are four types of fat: two are healthy and two should be consumed in minimal amounts. The two healthy forms of fat are unsaturated (polyunsaturated

over, he says. It was the nest CD Id ever heard by a GALA chorus quality wise and Ive heard thousands of these things. The proof is pretty much there in the pudding. You cant really fool microphones. You can adjust them a little but they pick up what they hear they sing really well and theyve crossed some really important bridges and boundaries. D.C. is absolutely in that top tier. The D.C. Chorus is a quasi-unofcial spin off of its San Francisco counterpart. During an early 80s national tour, the San Francisco group performed at Washingtons Kennedy Center and had a profound effect on local audiences. Marsha Pearson, a straight woman who lived in Dupont Circle at the time and enjoyed hanging out with gay men, was one such person. I couldnt believe we didnt have one of these, she says during a phone chat this week from her home in the Philadelphia area. I thought, Were the nations capital, how come we dont have this? She hand wrote iers four to a sheet had her sister photocopy them at her ofce, cut them up by hand and passed them out at Capital Pride in 1981. Accounts vary about how many showed up to the rst practice at the long-defunct gay community center (no connection to the D.C. Center) on Church Street. Pearson remembers about 30. Others say it was more like 15-ish. It was June 28, 1981 (30 years Tuesday) and, by all accounts, an innocuous beginning. Pearson never sang with the group it was exclusively a mens chorus all along. She asked if anybody had any conducting experience. The late Jim Richardson did and became the rst director. I still remember the rst chord, Pearson says. It was just a simple thing, you know, like do, mi, so, do, but I just got goosebumps. I was just elated that even one note came out, I was so excited. I got those same goosebumps at the
anniversary concert last weekend. I put their CDs on and I get the same thing, especially on certain things they sing. You just cant believe it sounds so great. Steve Herman, who was also at the San Francisco groups Kennedy Center performance, dropped his then-partner off at the rst rehearsal, said hi but didnt stay. At the second gathering, members told him they needed behind-thescenes help. He became a non-singing member and is the only person whos been continuously involved with the Chorus for its entire 30 years. Hes been incredibly active and been on the board most of those 30 years, even president for four. Im not a singer so I dont have that experience, but I wouldnt be there for 30 years if it wasnt a major part of my life, he says. I wouldnt have supported it so long if I didnt think it was rst rate. It was decided early on that the word gay would be the rst word of the name. Members didnt want any subtlety when it came to who they were and what they were about. The rst performance was in September at City Hall. The second was at the Eagle, then on 9th Street. Members stood on the steps between the rst and second oors. One of the rst songs performed was This Train is Bound for Glory, a gospel standard. The rst ticketed show was at St. Marks Episcopal Church on Capitol Hill. By summers end, the group had swelled to about 80 members, a size it retained for several years. We werent that good, but the audience was unbelievably responsive, Herman says. We did three nights, two at St. Marks and one in Baltimore and it was packed. Larry Cohen, a baritone who joined in 1986 shortly after he came out and moved to Washington, remembers a varied repertoire in those years with a mix of classical, show tunes and pop. He says the group didnt start putting on theatrical productions until about 10 years ago. It used to be more of a show choir,
you know, stand-on-the-risers-and-singkind of thing, he says. But in this age of multi-media technology, the audience has come to expect a lot of visuals, action and movement on stage so we mix it up and give them everything from a cappella close harmony to show-stopping production numbers. Jeff Burhman, artistic director since 2000, joined the Chorus rst as a baritone in 1986. He says the evolution of the Chorus has entailed a number of factors from what other choral groups in the region offer, what arrangements and repertoire is, or was, available at any given time and what has proven successful at the box ofce. Weve always had what I call the GTGs and the SMQs, he says. The good time girls who enjoy the Broadway and pop stuff and want to have a good time, and the serious music queens who want classical and traditional western stuff. When we were founded and even when I came on in 86, we were still a novelty if you think about it. There wasnt a lot of repertoire to be had so the choruses tended to be more traditional. They were doing a lot of college glee club repertoire and whateve we could nd. When I joined we were singing German and French and traditional choral literature. Thats my background in classical music, so I was used to it and the audience accepted it. But then in the late 80s and early 90s, it started to reect what was going on in the gay community. You started to see the AIDS crisis, for instance, reected in the music. We wanted to sing about things that resonated with us, not just AIDS, but what it was like growing up as a gay man, so there became less interest in the traditional stuff. This has happened with all the large (gay) mens choruses. Some of the directors have come in with more of a classical bent, but it just doesnt sell tickets. During the nine years that Buhrman was assistant director, he saw the shift. I clearly saw that when we did the
shows with a more entertaining twist, we got a bigger audience, he says. We would do something with a lot of opera and the serious music queens would come and everybody else would stay home. In time, the Chorus became known for its commissions thereve been three so far that have explored modern gay themes and its all-male productions of popular musicals like Grease, The Wizard of Oz and Best Little Whorehouse in Texas. Jack Reiffer, who came out of a straight marriage and joined the Chorus in 1998 shortly after coming out, says the Chorus has exposed him to many musical styles that had previously been off his radar. As a rst tenor the Chorus uses barbershop harmonies (rst tenor, second tenor, baritone and bass) but in a much different style Reiffer quickly became a leader within the group, leading sectionals and mentoring new members. We prefer to talk about putting on shows now rather than giving concerts, he says. The word is out in a town like this that its great entertainment. Membership has tripled under Buhrmans leadership and most involved agree the quality has improved dramatically over the years. Burhman is careful not to make the music too intimidating the singers are volunteers and some dont read music while also expecting them to memorize their parts and rise to the occasion. Its a catch 22 in a positive way, he says. By having a good Chorus, you attract good singers and by having good singers, you have a better Chorus. Cohen says the sense of family that exists has kept him involved along with the music and message. Its an extended family in the truest sense of the word, Cohen says. You really form life-long friends and look out for one another and celebrate milestones together. And then you have the message on top of that, of hope, love, acceptance and tolerance. It really does change hearts and win people over in time.

The top 4 convertibles for summer
By JOE PHILLIPS
June is bustin out all over. Between Newt Gingrichs imploding campaign and Anthony Weiners immodest photos, its becoming a long hot summer in Washington. And its enough to make you head for the hills or the beach. Thats where a cool convertible comes in. From soft tops to retractable hardtops, there are more than 60 different models to help you get away from it all. Some are brand new. Others boast swanky upgrades. To help you choose, here are four of the best. such powerful engines and the 4,116-lb. heft, gas mileage is decent. And surprise theres almost no cowl shake: a big bugaboo with Camaro convertibles ever since they arrived in the 1960s. Retro styling and a brawny exhaust rumble are big plusses. Tight rear seating, minimal trunk space and limited driver visibility are not. Still, cornering and braking are BMW-like. Its also quiet, thanks to the insulated acoustic liner in the cloth top.
Chysler 200 $27,000 Mpg: 19 city/29 highway Sure, Chrysler took its four-year-old Sebring, reshaped the front and rear ends, then slapped on new 200 badging. But this isnt a case of bait and switch. While the chassis, doors and roof are still the same, the 200 is longer, lower and more chiseled. The interior now much quieter is also more stylish, with Euro-chic black (or black-and-cream) padded surfaces instead of the Sebrings hard cheap plastic. Such styling cues seem to channel Audi. But the ride while more nimble than before is still a bit soft. Still, the optional V6 is no slouch (though the sluggish four cylinder is forgettable). And theres a wind blocker a luxury-car feature along with choice of either vinyl soft top or steel hard top. Overall, its hard to beat the 200s price: A D V E R T Isimilar G P R O O F often twice as much. S I N mid-sizers are

Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet $47,000 Mpg: 17 city/22 highway Whaaaat? Thats pretty much the reaction to seeing a topless two-door Murano CrossCabriolet, Nissans ballsy crossover/ convertible mashup. The only other vehicle that came close was Chevys ill-fated SSR pickup/convertible, which lasted just four years. But the CrossCabriolet may fare better. Its roomy, has Muranos handsome styling and is brimming with so much standard gear including large-screen nav system, kickin Bose audio and heated seats and steering wheel that there are few options left to offer. As in the original Murano, seating is high for great visibility. And braking and acceleration are seamless. But Nissan didnt just take a Murano and chop off the top. Almost everything is new from the windshield back, which is why the suspension is so solid and the t and nish look custom-made.

Chevy Camaro $30,000 Mpg: 18 city/29 highway For drivers needing more testosterone, Chevys bad-boy muscle car boasts a 312hp V6. The high-test SS model with its whopping 426-hp V8 hits 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds and costs $10,000 more. Yet despite
BMW 650i Series $91,000 Mpg: 15 city/22 highway BMW is a master magician. While this 6 Series redo looks leaner and lighter, its actually longer, wider and heavier. The result is more cabin and cargo room, as well as better handling and traction. While the Camaro CC has more horsepower, the BMWs twin-turbo V8 packs more punch: 0 to 60 in a blistering 4.8 seconds. Plenty of high-tech marvels, including side cameras in the front fenders to help you see around corners. And a backup camera cleverly combines images from cameras in each side-view-mirror to give you a birds-eye panorama of the car from above. Biggest surprise: no retractable hardtop only a cloth roof.

Unexpected charms
Baltimore provides an affordable D.C. alternative for many
By WAYNE CURTIS
Baltimore celebrates Pride this weekend with parades and parties on Saturday, a festival on Sunday and many smaller celebrations throughout Charm City. And, because were so close to D.C., well also have many former Washingtonians taking part. These ex-Washingtonians considered Baltimore an attractive alternative because it was affordable, had a great quality of life and reasonable commute times. Today, even after years of housing distress in both cities, those factors still hold true. As Washington home prices have begun creeping higher again, Baltimore still offers home ownership to many people who are priced out of the District. I asked two past clients, both in long term same-sex partnerships, how they feel about their decision to buy in Baltimore. Each couple has one partner who makes the commute to D.C. Nick and Tim bought a renovated rowhouse in Fells Point, one of Baltimores Inner Harbor neighborhoods. When we moved here six years ago, our intention was to be within walking distance of coffee shops, restaurants and entertainment. We were attracted to the citys vitality, writes Nick. Ten years ago, Martin and his partner bought and renovated an 1840s townhouse in the mid-town neighborhood of Mount Vernon. He agrees with Nick about the quality of life: A lot of my favorite things to do are within a 10-minute walk from home: The Walters Art Museum, the Sunday farmers market and restaurants serving Indian, Nepali, French, Thai, Italian, Mexican and American food. Martin is also an avid cyclist. It is very easy to get to northern Baltimore County where the roads and scenery are fantastic for bicycling, he says. Is Baltimore gay friendly? Nick votes yes. Our neighbors embraced us quickly and welcomed us into their social circle, he says. We never expected to move into the city to find the kind of warm friendships we thought existed only in small towns. For Martin, there was never a question. I havent really thought of Baltimore as anything other than gay friendly. Its not so much sexual orientation but rather community and other interests and issues which form the basis of a lot of my friendships. That aspect of Baltimore I really like. Was D.C. an option? We simply could never have afforded a place like this in D.C., Nick says. The cost of homes in Baltimore is probably one-third that of D.C. Martin agrees. We certainly wouldnt be able to maintain the same standard of living in D.C. Who knows where wed end up if we had to relocate; probably not in D.C. at all. What about the commute? Martin commutes daily to Washington. My house is a 10-minute walk from Penn Station, so the Baltimore side of the commute is pretty easy. From Union Station I take the Metro and then walk another 10 minutes to my office. But this cyclist has taken advantage of
another option. This April I have started riding my bike to work: Mondays and Thursdays I ride from Baltimore to D.C. and take the MARC back, and on Tuesdays and Fridays I take MARC down and bike back to Baltimore at the end of the day. Wednesday is a rest day. Believe it or not, the bike route is pretty nice. Although it takes longer, I get my workout in so that I dont have to go to the gym over lunch or on the weekends. Tim works for the D.C. Fire Department, but he has an unusual schedule. He doesnt have a Monday-through-Friday commute, writes Nick, who drives about 20 minutes to his job in Anne Arundel County. The beauty of city living is that once you get home, you seldom drive. When D.C.-based friends visit, what do they think of Baltimore? When our friends visit and we show them our Baltimore, theyre pleasantly surprised, Nick says. They admit they
had the wrong impression and usually go away liking the city. In fact, sometimes theyll call us and ask, What was the name of that restaurant? or Where was that museum? so they can bring their friends to enjoy Baltimore as well. People who visit us from D.C., Martin says, are usually surprised by how unlike D.C. Baltimore is. Baltimore is the older city, its less transient, it has a commercial and industrial vibe which D.C. never did have. A lot of visitors say Baltimore feels more real than D.C. So, if you are a D.C. resident visiting Baltimore this Pride weekend, be prepared for pleasant surprises. Well welcome you with open arms. Enjoy our hospitality and get to know our city. You might even want to start calling it home, hon.

large and small. Some homeowners are now opting for low- or nothreshold showers and sinks and vanities of custom heights. Increasing in popularity is the comfort-height toilet that is easier to sit down on than older, shorter models. As is true with any design element, universal design additions should coordinate with the overall ow and aesthetics of the home. Designers, contractors and architects should incorporate changes while refraining from taking away from the beauty of a home. Many manufacturers keep this in mind when developing new products for both home construction and upgrades. When considering a universal design project of any size or scope, homeowners should ask themselves: 1. How long do I plan to live in my home? 2. How can I make my house more accessible to my family and visitors of varying abilities? 3. How much money can I afford to spend? If you are overwhelmed or unsure of how you can introduce universal design concepts to your home, discussing these topics with a Certied Aging in Place Specialist (CAPS) can make the process easier to navigate. But most importantly, remember that universal design is about balance you can incorporate a variety of universal design elements without disrupting the aesthetics of your home. The end result is a home to enjoy for many years to come.
