INTRODUCTION WHO WAS CHANAKYA? For centuries to come and the centuries that went by, which recorded in history talking of the great men and legendary characters who shaped time through their vision and exemplary actions. Chanakya, perhaps is the only personality who has been accepted and revered as a genius both by Indian and Western scholars. He is a historical milestone in the making of India amidst tremendous upheavals and myriads of reversals. One of the greatest figures of wisdom and knowledge in the Indian history is Chanakya. He is estimated to have lived from 350 - 283 B.C. Chanakya is known as the "Pioneer Economist of India". As a person, Chanakya has been described variously, as a saint, as a ruthless administrator, as the king maker, a devoted nationalist, a selfless ascetic and a person devoid of all morals. He created controversy by saying The ends justify the means and the ruler should use any means to attain his goals and his actions required no moral sanctions. Chanakya, also known as Kautilya or Vishnugupta, was born in Pataliputra, Magadh (modern Bihar), and later moved to Taxila, in Gandhar province(now in Pakistan). He was a professor (acharya) of political science at the Takshashila University and later the Prime Minister of the Emperor Chandragupta Maurya. He is regarded as one of the earliest known political thinkers, economists and king-makers. He was the man to envision the first Indian empire by unification of the then numerous kingdoms in the Indian sub-continent and provide the impetus for fights against the Greek conqueror Alexander Chanakya is perhaps less well known outside India compared to other social and political philosophers of the world like Confucius and Machiavelli. His foresight and wide knowledge coupled with politics of expediency helped found the mighty Mauryan Empire in India. He compiled his political ideas into the 'Arthashastra', one of the world's earliest treatises on political thought and social order. His ideas remain popular to this day in India. In Jawaharlal Nehru's Discovery of India, Chanakya has been called the Indian Machiavelli. Three books are attributed to Chanakya: Arthashastra, Nitishastra and Chanakya Niti. Arthashastra (literally 'the Science of Material Gain' in Sanskrit) is arguably the first systematic book on economics. It discusses monetary and fiscal policies, welfare, international relations, and war strategies in details. Many of his nitis or policies have been compiled under the book title Chanakya Niti. Nitishastra is a treatise on the ideal way of life, and shows Chanakya's in depth study of the Indian way of life.

LEGEND When Chanakya was born he had a full set of teeth, which is a sign that he would become a king or an emperor. But since he was born in a Brahmin family, it was considered inappropriate. Thus, his teeth were broken and it was predicted that he would make another person a king and rule through him. Even as a child, Chanakya had the qualities of a born leader. His level of knowledge was beyond children of his age. Chanakya was thrown out of the court of King Nanda as he was a blunt man and spoke his mind clearly. Chanakya swore he would take revenge. Chanakya comes across Chandragupta as a young child. Even at that age, he was a born leader and showed the qualities of an able Emperor. He was the guiding force behind Chandragupta and the vital person who made him an able Emperor. Chanakya adds poison in little amounts daily in Chandragupta's food in order to make him immune to poison, lest some enemy tries to poison him. However Chandragupta was unaware about this and once gave a little food to his wife who was in the ninth month of pregnancy. She didn't survive but Chanakya cut open her belly and took out the baby. This baby grew up to become an able emperor named Bindusara. He had a minister named Subandhu who did not like Chanakya. He told Bindusara that Chanakya had killed his mother. Without assessing facts, Bindusara confronted Chanakya. On knowing the whole story, he felt ashamed at his hasty actions and begged for forgiveness. He asked Subandhu to go and apologize and make Chanakya come back. Subandhu was very cunning and on the pretext of going to apologize to Chanakya, he killed him. Thus, ended the life of a great person like Chanakya just because of political rivalry.

CHANAKYA ON MANAGEMENT:A Human Relation A manager must keep on thinking how best to manage the present work , and plan for the future . chanakya is all the while concerned about the work since it is only through successful accomplishment of the work that he contribute to the goal of wealth generation. But a manager, who is unsure of himself, not clear in his thinking, is unable to take right decision at the right time. As a result, he avoids taking decision, he becomes timid.. Afraid of taking up any responsible work etc. such timidity simply means that he is not concerned enough, does as demanded by his role of a manager. Another implication of that a manager who ceases to care for his work, even temporally, is exhibiting timidity: an attitude no manager would like to be associated with his name. Do not timid at work is the massage. Chanakya wants to emphasis this need for managing the boss by giving thus metaphor immediately. But more importantly, he wants to demonstrate that the need as well as lead role here is that of the manager and not of his boss but by the manager himself. After all, his working with the boss not for the boss , but for the organization is a process , not a one time affairs. It is necessary for this relation for the manager and his boss. If it becomes a loose win or win lose relationship. It will cease to be a continues process. This process can be either a vicious circle of continually deteriorating relationship; or a virtuous circle of continually improving relationship. Both these aspect are brought out well by this metaphor on cows milk: the one who desire to get milk success at work -has to handle the cow the boss well, after understanding its (his) nature to ensure that the process is continues.

7 PILLARS OF BUSINESS FROM CHANAKYA ARTHSHASTRA

1.The King (The leader) All great organisations have great leaders. The leader is the visionary, the captain, the man who guides the organisation. In today's corporate world we call him the Director, CEO, etc. Without him we will loose direction. 2. The Minister (The manager) The manager is the person who runs the show - the second-in-command of an organisation. He is also the person whom you can depend upon in the absence of the leader. He is the man who is always in action. An extra ordinary leader and an efficient manager together bring into existence a remarkable organisation. 3. The Country (Your market) No business can exist without its market capitalisation. It is the area of your operation. The place from where you get your revenue and cash flow. You basically dominate this territory and would like to keep your monopoly in this segment. 4. The Fortifid City (Head office) You need a control tower - a place from where all planning and strategies are made. It's from here that your central administrative work is done. It's the nucleus and the center of any organisation. 5. The Treasury Finance is an extremely important resource. It is the backbone of any business. A strong and well-managed treasury is the heart of any organisation. Your treasury is also your financial hub. 6. The Army (Your team) When we go to war, we need a well-equipped and trained army. The army consists of your team members. Those who are ready to fight for the organisation. The salesmen, the accountant, the driver, the peon - all of them add to your team. 7. The Ally (friend / consultant) In life you should have a friend who is just like you. Being, in the same boat, he can identify with you and stay close.
