The Blessing
Genesis 27: 1-38

The Blessing
Genesis 27: 1-38
One of the privileges and responsibilities of the Jewish father was
to pass on blessings to his children. This is demonstrated in Isaacs
blessing of Jacob in Genesis 27. This was a very important event. Every
child has a deep need for their fathers blessing and for the blessing of
other signifcant loved ones in their life. Fathers today have the ability
to bless their children. The blessing of the father communicates to
the child unconditional love and approval. These are key factors that
contribute to positive self-esteem and emotional well being. This
sermon explored elements of the blessing and encouraged fathers
(and others) to extend that blessing to their children.
Review the story of the blessing in Genesis 27: 1-38
What does it mean to be blessed?
What does it mean to bestow a blessing upon someone?
How important is a fathers blessing to a child?
How do you think a child feels if he/she misses the fathers blessing as
did Esau?
How does a fathers blessing impact the childs self-esteem and emo-
tional well being?
m| gr oup Mat er i al
How did Isaac demonstrate each of the fve elements of the blessing as he
blessed Jacob?
1. Meaningful Touch
2. A Spoken Message
3. Attributing a High Value
4. Picturing a Special Future
5. An Active Commitment
What elements of the blessing did Jesus apply as he related to others?
What are some ways you can put the fve elements of the blessing into practice?
How can the elements of the blessing be applied to other relationships in our
lives?
What other thoughts do you have about the concept or practice of the blessing?
