Health Education Plan

Objectives: 1. After 2 hours of providing health teachings, the patient will be able to verbalize understanding of importance of adherence to medications and diet. 2. After 2 hours of providing health teachings, the patient will be able to demonstrate proper ways to perform deep breathing and coughing exercises and to avoid smoking, drinking and using drugs. 3. After 2 hours of providing health teachings, the patient will be able to demonstrate appropriate isolation techniques. Materials Needed: 1. charts 2. pictures 3. visual aids General Health Teachings 1. Medications Specific Health Teachings a. Instruct the client to follow the drug regimen exactly as prescribed and always to have a supply on hand. b. Teach about side effects and ways of reducing them to ensure adherence. c. Remind the client that the disease is usually no longer contagious after drugs had been taken for 2-3 consecutive weeks. a. Maintain your total intake of fats/oils at between 20-35 percent of calories, with most fat coming from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fat, such as oily fish, nuts, and vegetable oils. b. Consume an adequate amount of fruit and vegetables but stay within the correct calorie level for a healthy weight. On a 2000-calorie diet, eat 2 cups of fruit and 2 and half cups of vegetables per day. Eat more or less according to your calorie needs. c. Eat a variety of fruit and vegetables each day. Choose from all five vegetable sub-groups (dark green, orange, legumes, starchy vegetables, and other vegetables) several times a week. a. Demonstrate pursed-lip breathing during exhalation. b. Instruct and demonstrate with deep breathing and coughing exercises.

(Deep breathing :) 1. Place your hands palm down on the border of your rib cage, and inhale slowly and evenly through the nose until the greatest expansion is achieved. 2. Hold your breath 2 to 3 seconds. 3. Then exhale slowly through the mouth. (Coughing :) 1. Ask the client to exhale deeply, hold a breath for a few seconds and then cough once or twice. 2. Ensure that the client coughs deeply and does not just clear the throat. 3. Encourage client to carry out deep breathing and coughing at least every 2 hours, taking a minimum of five breaths each session. a. Urge the client who smokes to quit in order preventing exposure to chemical agents. b. Urge the client who is alcoholic to quit avoiding further damage to the immunes system. c. Urge the client who uses illicit drugs to quit. a. Instruct the client to cover his/her mouth and nose when coughing or sneezing. b. Teach the client to place used tissues in plastic bags, and to wear a mask when in contact with crowds until the drugs suppress infection.
