Troubleshooting Routers

If youencounter a problemwhileconnecting or using your Iomega StorCenter ix2-200, check thetopics listedbelowfor possiblesolutions.

If youhaveproperlyset port forwarding onyour router andremoteaccess stilldoes not work, youmayhavemultiplerouters onyour network. Inthis situation youwillmost likelyhavetwoNAT (Network Address Translation) firewalls.

1. Oneof theeasiest ways toidentifythis issueis tolog intotherouter towhichtheIomega StorCenter ix2-200 is connected.

2. Onceyouhaveloggedin, gotothepagethat shows therouter's WANIPaddress, usuallyStatus or Network Info.

3. If theWANIPaddress begins with192.168, 10, or 172, youmayhavea NAT Firewallbetweentherouter andInternet connection.

Thereareseveraloptions for resolving doubleNAT situations. Thesections belowwillexplorethepros andcons of eachresolution:

Enabling the DMZ

Most routers havea featurecalledDMZor Default Server. DMZstands for DemilitarizedZone, Data Management Zone, DemarcationDone, or Perimeter Network. TheDMZallows youtoenter anIPaddress that willexist outsidetherouter's NAT Firewall.

This is theeasiest waytoconfigureyour network tohandledoubleNAT situations; however, it is dependent onyour primaryrouter having DMZfunctionality.

ToenabletheDMZ:

1. Log intotheprimaryrouter.

2. Navigatetothesettings pagefor DMZor Default Server. Refer tothedocumentationthat camewithyour router for informationonwherethis feature is found.

3. Enter thesecondaryrouter's IPaddress.

4. Saveyour settings.

Your secondaryrouter is nolonger behindyour primaryrouter's firewall. If port forwarding is correctlyconfigured, remoteaccess shouldnowbeworking properly. Moving your secondaryrouter intotheDMZshouldnot haveanyeffect onthesecurityof thenetwork, sinceit is stillprotectedbythesecondary router's firewall.

Configuring Port Forwarding on Double NAT Networks

If for somereasonthenetwork configurationcannot bechangedandyour setuprequires thedoubleNAT, youmust performtheport forwarding steps twice. Ontheprimaryrouter, set theport forwarding tothecascadedrouter's externalIPaddress. Onthecascadedrouter, set theport forwarding totheIomega StorCenter ix2-200's IPaddress.

Bridging the Secondary Router

Makesurethat theprimaryrouter (usuallytheoneconnectedtoor acting as theDSL/Cablemodem) is theonlyonewithDHCP(DynamicHost Configuration Protocol) andNAT (Network Address Translation) enabled. Thesecondaryshouldbechangedtobridging mode. Makesurethesecondaryrouter connects tothe primaryrouter using a standardport rather thantheport labeledUplink or Internet. This willbasicallyturnyour secondaryrouter intoa switch; however, you canstillenableits Wireless Access Point (if equipped.)

Refer tothedocumentationthat camewithyour router for configurationinformationandsettings.

Bridging the Primary Router

If noneof theaboveoptions areavailable, youwillneedtoenabletransparent bridging onyour primaryrouter. Youwillprobablyneedtocallyour ISP(Internet ServiceProvider) tohavetheDSL or CableModem/NAT put intobridgemode, whichwillthendisablethefirst NAT/Firewall. If youconfiguredyour Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 using DHCPyoumaynot beabletoreconnect toit via RemoteAccess after a reboot. DHCPwillautomatically get anIPaddress fromtheserver whenever theIomega StorCenter ix2-200 restarts. This is a verysimplewaytoconfiguretheIomega StorCenter ix2-200 but cancauseproblems withyour router's port forwarding settings. Therouter does not dynamicallyupdateport forwarding settings andcannot port forwardto your Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 if its IPaddress changes.

Toresolvethis problemyoucantryoneof thefollowing techniques:

Increasethelengthof theDHCPlease: Your router willattempt toremember allDHCPclients andgivethemthesameIPaddress everytimethey request anIPaddress; however, therouter willforget clients if theydonot request anIPaddress for a certainamount of time. Your router willhaveayour Iomega StorCenter ix2-200 if its IPaddress changes. Toresolvethis problemyoucantryoneof thefollowing techniques:

setting for howlong theDHCPleaseis valid. If your network requires DHCP, this maybea goodsolution; however, it is not always guaranteedtowork. Youmayneedtooccasionallyupdateyour router's port forwarding settings.

UseStaticDHCP: Somerouters allowyoutoassignStaticIPaddresses throughtheDHCPsystembasedontheMAC address of thedevice. This ensures that theIomega StorCenter ix2-200 willalways get thesameIPaddress andyour port forwarding settings willalways becorrect. 3. NavigatetotheIPaddress settings interfacepageonyour Iomega StorCenter ix2-200. For moreinformation, check theNetwork Settings section of this manual.

4. Enter a newIPaddress that is outsideof your router's DHCPrange. For example, if your router is distributing IPaddresses intherangeof 192.168.14.2-192.168.14.50, youwillwant toassigntheIomega StorCenter ix2-200 a number between192.168.14.51 and192.168.14.255. Makesureyouareassigning theIomega StorCenter ix2-200 anIPaddress that is not inusebyanother device.

5. Enter a subnet mask. Thesubnet mask describes thesizeof your network. For most networks this willbe255.255.255.0 whichallows for 256 network devices. If youareona larger network or areusing theself-assignedAPIPA range(169.254.x.x), youwillwant tousea 255.255.0.0 or larger subnet mask.

6. For best results, enter theIPaddress(es) for your DNS Server(s).

7. If necessary, enter theIPaddress(es) for your WINS server(s).

8. Enter a gatewayaddress. Inmost cases, this willbetheIPaddress of your router.
