Train2Game Student Placement Information

Philosophy: Offering work experience to students in their specialist industry is a fundamental part of any learning process and is a key feature of the Train2Game blended learning courses. With the high standard of work required in todays Games industry , together with the margin for error becoming so narrow, Train2Games work placements are limited to our most gifted students (minimum assessment criteria of +88%). This program is unique to Train2Game and is not offered by any other UK learning institution. The Train2Game Student Placement Scheme operates across the full range of current Train2Game courses: Artist & Animator, Developer (programming) and Designer. A key feature of the program and major advantage to the studio is that the placement scheme is a funded Placement program by Train2Game. The Train2Game Student Placement Scheme covers England, Scotland, Channel Islands, Wales and Northern Ireland. Placements can range for periods of between 2 and 6 months. The scheme is publicised to all Train2Game students and is intended as an extracurricular activity that will help bolster the students knowledge base by applying their learning in a realworld industry based environment. There are approximately 141 development studios in the UK, Train2Game would like to work with as many of these studios as it can to develop home grown talent thereby stemming the brain-drain currently rife with the UK games development community.

As a UK Games Development Studio, we have contacted you with a view to getting you involved in the Train2Game placement program. It may also be that you have contacted us, or one of our Train2Game students has created an opportunity for a placement and has brought us together. All of these means of contact are acceptable and can kick start the process for a Train2Game funded placement student.

If having met and discussed the opportunity your studio chooses to move forward, we will need to approve your studio as suitable for placement students by asking a few basic questions, primarily based around health and safety at work, a risk assessment and planned tasks for the student whilst on placement, we can discuss this in more depth if you choose to progress further but the core of the approval process is based around our duty of care to the student and the relevance of the placement to his or her ongoing education, principally: Health and safety at work and risk assessment - Employers liability insurance/reasonable procedures/staff handbook/working environment Work placement tasking - Relevant work to the students ongoing education/good mentoring structure

Once your studio is approved, we will ask you to supply, a simple skills and abilities requirement (a job spec) relating to each of the placement positions being considered (you can ask for up to 3 placements) if need be we can work through this with you and propose a spec that you can sign off. On receiving your requirements list we will: Upload the information to our student database so as to search all available students in the locale with the requisite skills (the Train2Game blended learning courses, in total have over 4000 students enrolled). We will fine-tune the list of candidates using Train2Game Tutors knowledge of the identified students and Games industry experts who will review the students work to date including portfolio content. The object being to distil the list down to one or two individuals per role. Once we have identified what we believe to be the final candidates, we will arrange face to face meetings with the student/s directly. During this meeting, we will fully evaluate the individual and their applicability to the role. If we are satisfied that the student is capable of performing in the role you have identified, we will put the student forward for an interview with your studio contact. During the process of candidate identification, we will send you a placement pack that contains all of the relevant information for your studio and the student placement together with docs that will need completing by both you and ultimately the student prior to placement (insurance confirmation, working hours, etc)

We hope this information is of help and that you will consider working with us to help develop more UK games talent.
