JOURNEY WITH HAND LUGGAGE

Sponsorship offer

A film by Arek Biedrzycki Director of photography Patryk Jordanowicz

We are delighted to present you the latest project of young Polish filmmakers:

JOURNEY WITH HAND LUGGAGE

It is a film adaptation of one of the most significant European novels, The Trial by Franz Kafka. We tackle this crucial piece of collective consciousness with utmost respect, along with creative and unconventional approach.

SYNOPSIS

A tall, rapid, petrol flame burns over a white, salt-covered hill. A humid sea wind, which moves a lonely, neighbouring windmills blades, spreads around twirling ashes. A man, who has until recently stood in this place, chewing on an apple a huge, succulent Gloster is now someplace else. A small, compact car with two thugs inside can be seen in the distance, driving towards a small, nearby town. The thugs names are Willem and Franz. The name of the man with the apple was Joseph. His surname was K. Who was he? For what purpose had he arrived in this rocky, hostile land? What did he leave behind?

Journey with hand luggage a contemporary version of one of the finest European novels is an effort to answer the most fundamental existential question: To what end?. Not to what end do we live, but to what end do we die? It is both a polemic with Kafkas parable of life as a court and its creative transformation. The Kafkian setting and the title trial are given a new, celluloid expression.

PLAcE
Pag a small, Croatian island in the Adriatic Sea is a truly unique place. Sparsely populated still wild and intriguing and, most importantly, not invaded by tourists. The beauty of the island, its roughness, climate and distinctive light are going to be one of the main characters in our adaptation of such a difficult and demanding novel as The Trial by Franz Kafka. We want our approach to be unconventional and creative; therefore we intend to reject the usual, trite associations with this novel. Production of Journey with hand luggage a dreamlike, unsettling existential story on Pag is certainly a right decision.

Making an independent film adaptation abroad is surely a bold move. But there is a method in this madness. Creating a concise and mesmerising world in which we set out story is much easier in a place that has a natural aesthetic appeal. Intriguing, unordinary interiors and outdoor-sceneries will by themselves guarantee a concise and exceptionally cinematographic image.

(born 1978) is a cinematographer and photographer. He debuted as a director of photography in an independent production Katatonia in 2004. The movie turned out to be a spectacular success, receiving the main award in the Independent Cinema Competition during the Polish Film Festival. In the following years Patryk cooperated with a group of renowned documentary filmmakers. He successfully translated into the language of motion picture the work of Tomasz Wolski (Klinika, Zota Rybka, Szczciarze, Pomau), Czesaw Lang (Kuklen), Julia Kowalski (Antoni w cieniu) and a Krakow Film Festival Grand Prix

laureate Jacek Nagowski. Patryk collaborated in the photographing of the widely publicised Ewa Stankiewiczs film Trzech Kumpli, which tells the story of a secret police agent Ketman. However, despite his unquestionable success in the documentary field he values creative filmmaking the most, hence his drive towards narrative movies. On this account he worked together with Szymon Jakubowski during the making of Jak y, Szymons fictional film debut. Patryks most recent narrative film, Nie dotykajc ziemi, represented Katowice Film School at The International Film Festival of the Art of Cinematography Camerimage 2010. Patryk has worked extensively on advertisements, as well as television shows and series. He fancies outside shoots, especially in untypical locations.

It is worthwhile to be in the vicinity of art. In a modern world arts patronage seizes to be only a prestigious form of extra-business activity. Research by economic analysts exemplifies that a growth of a creative class, which undoubtedly includes filmmakers, transforms the way society perceives labour, leisure, consumption patterns and everyday life. It is culture that shapes the needs driving the economy. We would like to forge this idea into something more than a beautiful-sounding enlightenment slogan, hence We are counting on your cooperation!
