Portman Co-Sponsors Resolution to Recognize the Republic of Slovenia on their 20th Anniversary of Independence
WASHINGTON, D.C. U.S. Senator Rob Portman (R-Ohio) recently cosponsored S.Res.208, which congratulates the Republic of Slovenia on the twentieth anniversary of the countrys independence. The resolution passed last night by Unanimous Consent. The Republic of Slovenia has been an important ally to the United States in Southeast Europe and around the world, said Portman. Ohio is home to one of the largest Slovenian populations in America, and I am proud to acknowledge their milestone in democracy. Since gaining its independence in 1991, Slovenia has become an active member of international organizations such as the United Nations, NATO and the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe. The Slovenian government has made significant international efforts to promote peace, stability, and development in Southeast Europe and around the world. Portman understands the importance Slovenians play in the culture and economic success of Northeast Ohio. Last year, Portman visited the Slovenian Museum and Archives and Slovenian National Home with former Senator and Slovene George V. Voinovich to learn more about the significance of Slovenian history in Ohio. S.Res.208 is sponsored by Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA).

Article post by Philip Hrvatin

On Monday, May 23, 2011 KSKJ www.kskjlife.org members from the greater Cleveland area met at Our Lady of Lourdes Shrine on Chardon Road in Euclid, Ohio for their annual May devotions in honor of Our Lady of Brezje, Patroness of Slovenia. The annual observance sponsored by the Ohio Federation of KSKJ Lodges began at the 1976 International Eucharistic Congress in Philadelphia, where the Slovenian participants resolved to celebrate the feast day of Marija Pomagaj with a vigil prayer service the evening before the feast day. Rev. John Kumse, pastor of St. Marys Church assisted by Rev. Joseph Boznar, pastor of St. Vitus Church lead a service of prayers which included the recitation of the rosary, benediction and the singing of the Slovenian litanies to the Blessed Virgin Mary.

Known as one of the most spectacular vocal jazz and a capella groups across the globe, Perpetuum Jazzile will take the spotlight this summer in celebration of its first North America tour. The critically-acclaimed Slovenian ensemble is popular for its powerful rhythms, rich harmonies, unparalleled creativity, and special blend of pop, jazz, gospel, blues, Brazilian bossa nova, disco and funk. Perpetuum Jazzile performs mostly a capella with up to 50 members. There are also vocal percussions, a human beat-box, and an incredible array of drums, electronic beats, and choreographed hand movements that simulate storms. Perpetuum Jazziles powerful repertoire includes arrangements of songs by Toto, Michael Jackson, Earth, Wind & Fire, Billy Joel, George Benson, and more musical legends. The vocal orchestra performs in English, Italian, Portugese, Spanish, and Slovenian as well as other languages. Perpetuum Jazzile President/Manager Bostjan Usenik calls the North American tour a career milestone and priceless challenge for the vocal ensemble. "The time is ripe for us to take on the USA and Canada, the world's most demanding concert market, and from where PJ derives most of our international fans," he says. " "Not only do we offer innovative vocal renditions which have moved such top artists as David Paich, David Crosby, Allee Willis (etc.), PJ also brings to North America unanticipated rich sounds and an energy one would expect only from a rock concert. We hope you'll come to our concerts, en masse, and prepare yourselves for PJ's mesmerizing vocal ecstasy!" Perpetuum Jazzile is in its 28th year and is celebrated as YouTubes most watched a capella groups with more than 20 million hits. The award-winning vocal ensemble is also ranked among the websites Top 40 Music Videos. Its remarkable history and distinct musical styles have generated sold-out concert crowds, raving reviews, and a series of hit songs. An international phenomenon and leading force in a capella music, Perpetuum Jazziles artistic director Peder Karlsson, the founding member of The Real Group from Sweden, has worked with renowned artists including Bobby McFerrin, Van Morrison, and Sir George Martin. The group has toured in Austria, Italy, France, United Kingdom, Brazil, Croatia, Argentina, Ukraine, Serbia and the Netherlands.
