Malitubog-Maridagao, Libungan Rivers

From the areas of Lanao del Sur and Bukidnon flow the Libungan and Malitubog-Maridagao Rivers respectively. They eventually flow into the Ligawasan Marsh. The swelling of these heavily silted rivers and their tributaries due to the heavy rainfall in May and June aggravated by wanton deforestation caused severe flooding in the province of North Cotabato. This took place particularly in the municipalities Alamada, Libungan, Pigcawayan, and Midsayap and resulted in the destruction of thousands of hectares of farmlands.

Rio Grande de Mindanao

Matampay River

What can be done? In the short term:

1. Fast track the dredging of Rio Grande de Mindanao simultaneous dredging of various stretches. 2. Regularly clearing the water hyacinth as soon as they flow down towards Delta and Quirino bridges. 3. Revise the footings of both bridges so that water hyacinth would slide by them. 4. Fast track the work of widening and completing the Simuay cut-off channel and closing the breach. 5. Protect Tunggol Bridge and the old Matampay Bridge. 6. Construct Raradangan and Olandang Bridges. 7. Deploy 3 WaterMasters for the Mindanao River Basin

In the long term:

1. Replace Quirino Bridge 2. Systematize the dredging of the Rio Grande from Yllana Bay to Kubuntalan. 3. Reforestation of the Mindanao River Basin 4. Establishing catchment structures to catch water hyacinth as they flow from Ligawasan Marsh down towards Cotabato City. 5. Implement the high impact projects identified by the Mindanao River Basin Integrated Management and Development Master Plan:
