having lots of glasses to allow family and friends to all see the 3D, and a more comfortable viewing experience. The new player in the 3D TV arena is glasses-free 3D. Toshiba has stated that they will ship this version of 3D TV this year. I did specifically seek out the public Toshiba demo at CES in Las Vegas earlier this year, and I was not impressed. When I got to the demo, I was sent to station 3, position 2. Each station had three people watching, and the positions were marked by footprints on the floor. You had to be in the exact position or the TV was blurry. The three of us watching the demo were also uncomfortably close to each other, standing shoulder to shoulder in a tight semi-circle. I started in the middle, but swapped to the outside so that I could move my head to the side. The TV went out of focus with a couple inches of head movement, and then when I moved a few more inches over, it came back into focus with a slightly different view from the different angle. Another issue was the very much-reduced resolution of the TV. Since every angle of the TV gets a different view that is not seen from the other angle, the resolution of the tv image that each person sees is greatly diminished. For example, if the TV allows viewing from 8 angles, then the resolution of the TV will be reduced by a factor of 16 for each viewer (even if only one person is watching). The good thing about all 3D TVs is that they also work as regular 2D HDTV TVs. In many cases, since the 3D TVs need the highest performance, they use the best quality LCD panels, and so they have the best quality standard HDTVs as well. I know several people have bought the 3D TV, not for the 3D feature, but because it actually had the best regular HDTV picture quality. Another issue for all 3D TVs is that there is limited content available for viewing 3D (similar to the limited availability of HDTV programs when HDTV was introduced). There are some 3D movies (with more coming out gradually), some sporting events, but currently they are only available on ESPN 3D which is only available on satellite through Direct TV. I am not aware of any other TV shows being broadcast in 3D as of yet. Ultimately, as we always tell our customers, Trust your eyes! The benefits of adding a tray to the bottom of a tube feeder are twofold. Not only does it catch the extra debris keeping the ground underneath it clean it also creates more sitting room for birds like cardinals, finches, wrens and woodpeckers. More sitting room means more birds!

3D TV, Ready for Primetime? Take Two

Last year, in the Random Bytes column, I gave the opinion that 3D TV was not ready for use by most people and not worth the additional cost. After another year of technology advancement we thought I should take a look at where 3D TVs are right now. First, many TV companies did launch, and sell, a variety of 3D TV sizes using the active shutter glass technology. This technology quickly changes the entire screen from a left eye image to a right eye image and back (240 or 480 times a second). The 3D shutter glasses are battery-powered and black out one eye at a time in synchronization with the TV. The disadvantages of this technology are that the glasses are expensive and heavy, need to have the batteries replaced, and generally only work with the same brand of TV. The advantages are that the full resolution of the TV is used (but only in one eye at a time) and the cost of the TV (without glasses) is lower. Second, Vizio and LG have recently launched TVs using passive glasses technology. These TVs use low cost glasses that have different polarizations in each eye to let only every other column of the TV to be seen by each eye. Vizio had a large selection of 3D glasses from a variety of well known sunglasses makers (Oakley, Bolle, Nike, etc) on display that would all work with not only Vizio but other brands of TVs as well. (Plus these glasses would work at 3D movie theatres). The main disadvantages of this technology are that only half of the resolution of the TV is used for each eye and that an extra filter is needed in the TV that adds cost to the TV. The advantages are reduced flicker, generally higher brightness, lower cost of

The Kitchen Diva

My sister, Marcia, loves to garden. She generously shares her plants with me. Recently, she gave me a stevia plant as a gift. I use the leaves of this naturally sweet herb to sweeten a variety of drinks. Its also available commercially in a granular form like sugar. Stevia is a not-so-new sweetener that recently made its way into the U.S. market. Although Stevia has been sold in the U.S. for many years as a dietary supplement, it was not regulated by the Food and Drug Administration. Now that the FDA has declared its active ingredient rebaudioside A as generally accepted as safe, it is showing up in products like tabletop sweetener packets. PureVia (from PepsiCo and a subsidiary of Merisant, Whole Earth Sweeteners) and Truvia (from Coca-Cola and Cargill), along with some flavored waters and lower-calorie soda and fruit drinks, now contain stevia. Leaves from the stevia plant are steeped in water and then processed into crystalline form. These crystals create a sweet taste in the mouth, but are calorie-free when digested. As a sweetener, stevias extract is 250 to 300 times sweeter than sugar. This means only a very tiny amount is needed to add sweetness to a food or beverage. As with any sweetener, there are challenges to using stevia in food products. Stevia is naturally bitter, but tastes sweet after some delay. Although it is temperature and acid stable,

FRUiT SORBET Youll need an ice cream machine for this delicious recipe. You can use any fruit juice blend concentrate of your choice instead of raspberry. This recipe also works well if you substitute one (12.3 ounce) box of silken tofu for the yogurt, along with 1 cup of milk or soymilk. 2 cups plain low-fat yogurt 1/4 cup milk 1/2 cup unsweetened raspberry juice blend concentrate, thawed 1 tablespoon orange juice concentrate 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 3/4 teaspoon stevia sugar substitute 1 banana (optional) Blend all ingredients together in a blender until smooth. Pour into the container of an ice-cream machine, and process according to directions. Makes 4 servings. the natural bitterness and intense sweetness are challenges the food industry will have to overcome. Consumers will need to taste stevia and decide for themselves how well they like it. Another possible challenge is the price. Currently, it is expensive to use stevia or its active ingredient in foods. Products containing this naturally derived sweetener may be out of many consumers price range. Like other sugar substitutes, consumers need to watch for any warnings or concerns with stevia. It has been classified as safe, but it doesnt hurt to try it out slowly to see what effect it has on individual taste and digestion. This recipe for Fruit Sorbet uses stevia instead of sugar to sweeten the dessert.
