Overview of current situation

Suggestions (in this presentation)
Engineering issues
Undefined lanes throughout Inadequately designed merge zone at the base of Richmond Circle flyover Bus lane efficiency diminished by poor busshelter design BMTC patrons straying onto the road cause bus drivers to park away from the pavement BMTC drivers parking away from the pavement cause patrons to stray onto the road Under-utilized skywalk and resultant jaywalking On-street school dropoff/pickup zone encourages unsafe weaving and mixing of school children and traffic

Clearly define lanes and merge zone Augment and enhance bus lane Move school dropoff/pickup offstreet Add NMT infrastructure

Enforcement issues

Suggestions (not in this presentation)

Widen pavements to consistent 3m width and add guardrails Redesign bus shelter (in combination with driver education and patron enforcement) to maximize bus-lane efficiency

Current situation (Section 1)

Undefined lanes (red box). Unnecessary median separating traffic exiting the flyover and traffic from Vellara jn (orange box & orange arrow). Inconsistent road width (red arrow) compounded with inadequately designed merge zone at base of flyover .

Current situation (Section 2)

Undefined lanes (red box). Efficient bus-lane use hampered by Bishop Cottons Boys High School (BCBHS) drop-off zone (orange box) and BMTC driver/patron behavior. Undefined exit from BCBHS jn onto Residency Rd (red circle).

Current situation (Section 3)

St. Marks Rd Centerline meets FM Cariappa (alternatively Residency) Rd Centerline at an acute angle (~ 45) 3 lanes travelling south on St. Marks Rd widen to 4-5 lanes at the jn. These then merge into 3 lanes travelling north on Residency Rd, creating conflict (orange and red arrows).

Proposed solution (Section 1)

Use striping (e.g. dotted lines) and signage to encourage proper merging behaviour. Use on-street marking to delineate Bus-priority lane (also used to access on-street parking). This lane will end in hard-separated bus lane (see next slide). Use LHS road edge for bicycle lane (green line) through to Cash Pharmacy jn (see NMT Pilot survey).

Proposed solution (Section 2)

Move school drop-off/pickup zone to BCBHS premises (e.g. pic below). Demarcate additional entries into BCBHS from Hayes and St. Marks Rd(s); remove access from Residency Rd. Using appropriate signage (see below) and traffic control devices, guide traffic exiting BCBHS onto northbound Residency Rd. Extend hard median delineating bus lane to Cash Pharmacy jn and remove on-street parking beyond current bus lane entrance.

Proposed solution (Section 3)

Reduce lanes on St. Marks Rd (from 3 to 2), converting LHS lane to 3m wide sidewalk and bi-directional bicycle lanes. Use guide lines to direct left-turning traffic to 2 RHS, increasing the turning radius, and improving traffic flow (green arrows are only for the purpose of illustration).

Additional suggestions (Approach to Section 1)

To further mitigate merges at the base of the flyover, use signage to direct BMTC buses and Bangalore Club traffic, turning right at Richmond Circle, to use lanes to the left of the flyover.
