WHITE HOUSE CITES IAM MEMBERS AS CHAMPIONS OF CHANGE

Two IAM members, Local 2339H member Rosalie Canton of Houston, TX and Local 754 member Andrew Sandberg of Jamaica, New York participated in a "Champion of Change" roundtable at the White House. Each week, people who have special expertise in selected areas gather at the White House to give their ideas to better America. Canton, a Flight Attendant at Continental Airlines, and Sandberg, a Machinist on the Long Island Railroad, were selected as "Champions of Change" participants for the week dedicated to transportation issues.

Rosalie Canton
day.

The White House forum coincided with National Transportation Week (May 15-21) that was started by President Kennedy to recognize the nation's transportation systems and the people who move America every

Canton and Sandberg were among 20 people from the Transportation industry selected to take part in the roundtable. "It was very humbling to be seated around so many remarkable individuals and hear their vision for a better tomorrow for our country's youth," said Canton. "I'm proud to have been a part of this noteworthy group." Canton stressed the need for more vocational and apprenticeship training and more investment in the nation's transportation system to create jobs. "As I listened to the concerns and ideas from other Champions for Change, it became clear that although various transportation modes were represented, we all have similar issues and concerns," said Sandberg. "Working together, we can make real progress and improvements to our nation's transportation systems." "This event highlights the critical role IAM members play in the transportation sector of North America's economy," said IAM Transportation General Vice President Robert Roach, Jr. "Sister Canton and Brother Sandberg did an excellent job representing the concerns and hopes of air and rail workers. Immediate and large investments in our nation's transportation system are critical to providing jobs in the near term and the foundation of a modern economy for the future."

EXPRESSJET RESERVES
EXPRESSJET RESERVES Release from duty:
When you call Crew Scheduling at the end of your pairing, you must be released either to Domicile Rest or Days Off before leaving the airport. Per the Collective Bargaining Agreement, pg. 52, Section 5.T.5. Crew Scheduling has 30 minutes to give you your next assignment or release you from duty. Once you have been released, you are not liable to answer your telephone until your next reserve period. Crew Scheduling may call you only during the last hour of crew rest. There have been several reports of Crew Scheduling releasing reserves then calling them a short time later to assign them trips. There have also been reports that Schedulers are threatening to Miss Trip or UTC flight attendants who do not answer or call back. If you find yourself in this situation, contact your grievance representative with all necessary information - date, time, scheduler's name, and, if possible, keep the voice mail on your telephone.

Immovable Days Off:

The first largest set of days off on your reserve line are considered immovable. We have received several complaints that Schedulers are rolling, or attempting, to roll reserves into their immovable days off. Per your Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) Pg. 51, Section 5.T.3., the designated immovable period cannot be changed, unless the flight attendant agrees. If you are being pressured into agreeing, let your grievance reps know - again with all necessary information. And please note, your vacation is not considered your immovable days off, regardless of what Crew Scheduling tells you.

$5 FOR THE FIGHT

Local Lodge 2339O Weekly Update June 17, 2011

$5 FOR THE FIGHT CAMPAIGN

The fight against our rights and benefits has begun and we must act now to combat it. The attack on collective bargaining rights for our public sector union members in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana and Florida is only the beginning. Many other states and the Federal Government are in the process of going even further. The Republicans in the House and Senate have now introduced legislation trying to repeal the rights of railroad workers guaranteed under the Railway Labor Act. IAM International President Tom Buffenbarger is leading the way across our country. In his letter sent to all IAM members, including TCU, he stated the need to join in solidarity against these attacks, "The entire labor movement has awakened to the call of solidarity. Generations of union members who came before us fought these same battles many decades ago. They demanded fair wages, health care, and an eighthour work-day in a safe environment. They won pension plans and seniority systems. They negotiated agreements and stood firm against employers who refused to negotiate in good faith." President Buffenbarger introduced the "$5.00 for the Fight" campaign, in order to raise money for the IAM Education Fund. These funds will be used for on-the-ground face-to-face activities to protect the rights of working Americans. "President Buffenbarger is assuring that IAM members live up to the well earned moniker of "Fighting Machinists!" said TCU President Bob Scardelletti. In a letter to all Local Lodge Officers, President Scardelletti asked for all TCU members to join in this fight, "The $5.00 for the Fight campaign will give every person who donates a piece of the fight. Now is the time to have our voices heard. We don't want union treasury money. Donations are a personal commitment to our way of life." "The Union is the Last Line of Defense for the American Worker. Brothers and sisters, there is no one else who will stand up to protect the wages, benefits and pensions that we have all worked so hard to obtain." For more information contact your Local Chairman or any Local Lodge officer and find out how to help.

Effective immediately, Continental Airlines is offering fee-waived domestic flights to all employees that currently have Continental flight privileges. This change will benefit commuters by reducing the expense of travel to and from work, and will be helpful for those using their Continental flight benefits for personal travel. We urge pass riders who have pending domestic, economy reservations to cancel the bookings online and re-list to take advantage of fee-waived travel. These changes are part of the new United Continental's efforts to harmonize their pass travel programs. The new, fully-integrated program for regional partners will be announced by United Continental later this year and become effective in 2012.

Eligible Flights
All domestic Continental and Continental Express flights within the 50 states are eligible for fee- waived, non-revenue, economy class tickets. Continental pass travelers will continue to pay applicable service charges for traveling in premium classes.

Travel Reminder
Continental Airlines is working to harmonize travel systems and some mobile booking tools are not being updated to include the conversion of your SA4C booking to SA3P on ExpressJet equipment. Please ensure that you are booking your reservation through coair.com and giving as much advance notice as possible to ensure the Employee Travel Center can manually adjust your reservation.

THE TRUTH ABOUT AFA Differences Between IAM & CWA-AFA Democracy:
Unlike the CWA-AFA, the IAM is a purely democratic Union that utilizes direct membership voting. The members of the IAM vote on everything from their Constitution & Bylaws, to their local, district & grand lodge representatives. IAM Members also dictate how local expenditures are distributed while those represented by CWA-AFA have no such right. We at the IAM believe that the union is membership driven and that it is you who directs how your union is run.

Contracts:
The IAM has been able to negotiate contracts every few years allowing the membership to obtain increases in pay, benefits, and work-rules. CWA-AFA has a history of negotiating 10-year contracts that forces their members to fall way behind industry standards, so much in fact, that an IAM represented ExpressJet Flight Attendant makes more money than mainline represented CWA-AFA Flight Attendants.

Union Presence:
The IAM has been able to negotiate a mandatory IAM presence in all ExpressJet crew rooms. IAM is the only union that has negotiated such accessibility for flight attendants. A constant union presence in the crew room with direct access to the membership is what keeps our flight attendants informed and makes the union available & visible at all times. Those represented by CWA-AFA have no such benefit. In-fact, often times the CWA-AFA union office is located out of the

Local Lodge 2339O Weekly Update June 17, 2011

terminal making access difficult and leaving members feeling isolated from their union.

Resources:
The IAM is a strong industrial union backed by hundreds of thousands of members. This type of strength allows for the membership to have access and utilize resources such as the William W. Winpisinger Education & Technology Center. This is a unique one of a kind facility that no other union has. It allows the IAM to educate their members on issues such as leadership, grievances, negotiations and much more. The Winpisinger Education Center is so advanced, that those who take classes there obtain college credit towards a degree in labor studies from the National Labor College. CWA-AFA has no such facility. In-fact, CWA-AFA has been struggling so much financially that they have called off many trainings due to lack of monetary resources. At this years CWA-AFA Board of Directors meeting, a motion was passed to delay this years budget until later in the year. At last years Board of Directors meeting, CWA-AFA took out a $1.7 million dollar line of credit to fund it's activities due to insufficient resources.

MERGER INFORMATION
Dear Brothers and Sisters, Your Executive Board understands that commuting, family responsibilities, school, and the operational hardship ExpressJet is currently experiencing may make it difficult to attend union meetings and events. Your inability to participate is a great advantage to the company as our unified success ultimately results in higher pay rates and a costly new collective bargaining agreement for our Flight Attendants. The truth is; none of us want to work more and get paid less which is exactly what we face if AFA succeeds in their quest to represent the combined Flight Attendants of ExpressJet and Atlantic Southeast. We must come together and unite to ensure our industry leading contract is protected. There are so many ways you can play an active role in protecting yourself, and your peers. Educate yourself on not only the ASA/XJT contract comparison, but on the differences and resources of the Association of Flight Attendants (AFA) and the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAMAW). Educate your peers. A non-confrontational approach to discussing the differences in our unions would be to simply compare the work rules, compensation, and benefits of each work group. The

Local Lodge 2339O Weekly Update June 17, 2011

ExpressJet contract is far superior to the contract AFA negotiated for the Atlantic Southeast Flight Attendants. Make sure the company and the union has your current contact information. As information about the merger becomes available, you'll want to know. Wear your IAMAW pins, lanyards, luggage tags, and badges as a sign of unity and solidarity Speak positively of each other and don't allow the adversity we endure consume you. We only have each other so support your Brothers and Sisters with words of encouragement and unity.

If you would like to take a more active role in our organizing efforts please feel free to contact anyone on our organizing team. We have events planned system wide and could always use more support. During the United / Continental organizing campaign it is at the utmost importance to support our Brothers and Sisters at Continental to secure their success in the representative election. The near 25,000 combined Flight Attendants at the new United contribute immensely to the overall resources of the IAM. Be sure to talk to the United and Continental Flight Attendants who are deadheading on your flights about the protections offered in our industry leading contracts. In addition, please continue to file grievances and document operational irregularities as this Executive Board's top priority is to improve your working conditions. In Solidarity, Troy Robert Marr Recording Secretary, LL2339O
