HASAD AND ITS CURES
-through Piety and Awareness of Allah (swt)-

AL-HUDA
Inside this issue:
Welcome Back To University!!! Imaam Al-Bukhari 1

What every Muslim is obliged to do, is to love for her sister what she loves for herself of good things, and to hate for her sister what she hates for herself of bad things. This does not mean that she cannot like for herself what she likes for others. If she sees that her sister has something that she does not, and she wishes that she had it too, this is ghibtah (envy that is free from malice); if she wishes that the blessing would be taken away from them, this is called hasad (destructive jealousy). The Muslim needs to strive against her own self (jihaad al-nafs) so that her heart will be free of jealousy towards her Muslim sisters. If she sincerely loves her sisters, most of these problems from which she is suffering will disappear. Hasad (destructive jealousy) causes a great deal of harm in this world and in the Hereafter. AlTirmidhi narrated that the Prophet (pbuh) said: There has come to you the disease of the nations before you, jealousy and hatred. This is the shaver (destroyer); I do not say that it shaves hair, but that it shaves (destroys) faith. By the One in Whose Hand is my soul, you will not enter Paradise until you believe, and you will not believe until you love one another. Shall I not tell you of that which will strengthen love between you? Spread (the greeting of) salaam amongst yourselves.
(A hasan hadeeth. Jaami al-Tirmidhi, 2434)

Welcome Back To University!!! \(^^,)

Salaamalaik to all. First of all, we at MUSA welcome all of you back here at Otago University. We believe that the last holiday has brought some benefits to everyone, at least in terms of giving some times for rest from the hectic life-style at university, and times with the beloved one at home (i.e. family, friends). Let us together think, why are we here, at Otago University? (far away from family..) For whom are we putting ourselves through this? And what do we hope to achieve in the end? In this life, we need to be sure about our

plans. But the best of planners is Allah. [Al-Anfal 8:30]

What is the greater sense of purpose than to know that our ultimate goal is Allah??? Dear brothers and sisters Let us remind ourselves. If we are coming to university only to have fun, then know that there many other easier and cheaper ways to do that! Let us keep in mind, that we have great responsibilities on our shoulders. Thus, we should utilize this important time of life wisely and to the max! So come on brothers and sisters! Let us make today better than yesterday; and tomorrow better than today. Inshaallah~

Concerning the meaning of the phrase it shaves (destroys) faith, al-Tayyibi said: i.e., hatred takes away faith like a razor takes away hair. FEW SOLUTIONS: 1. Make dua to Allaah and ask Him to rid you of this problem. The Prophet (pbuh) used to say in his duaa, Wahdi qalbi waslul sakheemata sadri (guide my heart and remove ill will from my breast) Pondering the meanings of the Quraan and reading it frequently, especially the verses which speak of hasad, because reading the Quraan brings one a great deal of reward. Allaah says: Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds [Hood 11:114] Reading the seerah (biography) of the Messenger (pbuh), seeing how he kept away from hasad and how he loved good for others, even for his enemies. Announcement: Islam Awareness Week (IAW) this year will be held between 13th to 19th of August 2007. The theme will be released soon. Volunteers are needed during this week. purpose of creation and our direction. If not, we will lose ourselves in this crowd. We need to know and realize that WE ARE MUSLIMS, WE ARE SERVANTS to Allah and CALIPHS on this world. We are accountable to what we did on this world, and we will be questioned by Him in the hereafter.

Who was Imam al-Bukhari?

His full name was Muhammad ibn Ismail al-Bukhari (AH 194256), and he is most famous for his book entitled al-Jami alSahih (The Sound Comprehensive Collection), as the most reliable of all the hadith collections of Islam. Ibn Hajr al-Asqalani the famous scholar recounts, on an eye-witness authority, how Imam al- Bukhari would make ghusl and pray two rakats before including any hadith in his work, and he always carried with him one of the hairs of the Prophet (PBUH). Imam al-Bukhari memorized all the ahadith written in his books off by heart including the weak ahadith to know the correct narrators from the false ones. He also travelled thousands of miles all his life sometimes to hear just one or two hadiths from a scholar in a far off land. One of his scribes, Muhammad ibn Abi Hatim, said: When I was with him on a journey we would stay in a single room together, and I would see him rising fifteen or twenty times in a night to light the lantern, and work on an isnad (verifying a chain of narrators), after which he would lie down again. I asked him: Why do you impose all of this on yourself instead of waking me? and he would reply, You are a young man, and I dont wish to interrupt your sleep.

Imam Al Bukhari compiled his Sahih in Khurasan, arranged it in the sanctuary at Mecca, and completed it while seated between the minbar and the Blessed Prophetic Tomb in Madina. His karamat* are numerous and well-attested - once, after helping to build a fortress to defend the Muslim community, he provided the laborers with three small coins worth of bread, but even though there were a hundred laborers, there was enough for all. Ibn Abi Hatim narrated: I once saw al-Bukhari in a dream. He was walking behind the Prophet (PBUH), setting his feet directly in the Prophets footsteps. And when he (al-Bukhari) was lowered into his grave, people could smell the scent of musk. Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi narrated that Abd al-Wahid ibn Adam said: I once saw the Prophet (PBUH), with a group of his companions, in a dream. He was standing, and I greeted him, and when he returned my greeting, I said: Why are you standing here, O Messenger of Allah? and he replied: I am waiting for Muhammad ibn Ismail. A few days later the news of al-Bukharis death reached me, and when I checked I realized that he had died at the moment when I had that dream. *What are karamat? Karamat are miracles witnessed for righteous people and are of lesser marvel than Mojizaat which are for Prophets. Sources: www.sunnah.org (quoting from

Watch Out For The Arrows (Part III)

Some Ways To Survive In The Temptation Island! Yes, its hard, especially when youre constantly bombarded with obscene images: that hot, scantily clad guy or gal in the magazine luring you; or the persistent emphasis on sex in the movies (even Toy Story or Spider Man!); or the pervasive links to pornography while you may simply be checking your email. How can you protect yourself from all of this?

Remember your Accountability to

Allah. In Islam, you're fully accountable as soon as you understand and feel such temptations. Your eyes will testify about what you looked at on the Day of Judgment.

Take the Right Seat! In a public

place (e.g. caf), choose a seat that minimizes your view-frame and avoid mixed-crowds. It is precisely about such comfortable gazing at the attractive features of the passers-by that the Prophet (pbuh) advised 'Ali ibn Abi Talib: "Ali, do not let a second look follow the first. The first look is allowed to you but not the second.''(Ahmad, Abu Dawud, at-Tirmidhi.)

Avoid visiting malls and parks

alone. Always try to go out with a family member or a good friend, whose company may help you avert your eyes from the objectionable billboards and inappropriately clothed people. In summer, step out only when you have to.

Don't forget the power of Allahs

Remembrance (Dhikr)! It is the most powerful of all the defenses. Regular reading of prescribed Du'as will develop your Taqwa (consciousness) and keep you mindful of what thoughts you entertain.

Avoid friends that are into immoral movies, music, dirty jokes etc. Such activities are the tools of Shaytan that promote the idea of love based on looks or love at first sight. Such friends would take you into an artificial world of fantasies and false hopes, away from reality, before its too late! Therefore, either you help your friends change through gentle advice, or abandon frequent contact with them. As Allah warns us: "If anyone withdraws himself from Allah's remembrance, Most Gracious, We appoint for him an evil one to be his intimate companion." [43: 36.]

Never have 'nothing to do'!

Shaytan loves 'bored and idle' people. If you are feeling bored, do the dishes, or take out the garbage, or read some book. Allah says, "Do not throw yourself into destruction with your own hands." [2: 195.]

A Muslim University Student Checklist

Locate the daily PRAYER SPACE and TIMINGS, including for Friday prayer Find Islamic books, audios, video tapes. CDs or DVDs. (not cartoons, games or typical movies!) Come to the masjid during five daily prayers and between classes to relax and read Quran in peace Meet and introduce yourself to other fellow Muslim students, in your class or in your hall of residence How do you break the ice? Say Salaam of course! Assalamu Alaikum! Are you taking this course? Exchange CONTACTS and some personal information such as phone number, email or room number Seek their help in studies! Especially from seniors

Brothers: Brothers learn to lower your gaze or you will find yourself in all sorts of trouble! Sisters: Sisters it is important to find other good muslim sisters to keep company because the gates of Fitna are not only wide open, but you are a primary target for those who do not have your (Islamic) best interest in mind
Keep in touch with your FAMILY and friends back home. They need to hear from you and know how you are doing in university Know your Muslim Student Association (MUSA) and stay up-to-date to their events and activities Attend weekly Islamic Study Circle at masjid (after Isha on Friday) to LEARN more about islam, to remind yourself and to strengthen your imaan Get access to your Sheikh (your personal counselor!) Organize your timetable to not interfere with any prayers (esp. when you have choice in picking lectures, lab sessions or tutorials) Dont make your university experience any harder than it already is by trying to wing it on your own. Find someone with experiences!

Hangout with those known for

noble character and modesty. When you are around good people, they can remind you to abstain from that which Allah dislikes. As the Prophet (pbuh) said, A person is likely to follow the faith of his friends, so be careful about who you make your friend. (Ahmad.)

Always walk with your gaze lowered. But make sure not to bump into a hydro post! Lowering the gaze does not mean that you cannot have any eye contact as you walk or during a conversation. It means that you keep your eyes under control.

Surf or Watch TV when others

are around. The temptation to sneak a look at dirty pictures is heightened when you're alone in your room watching TV or surfing the internet. Shaytan's primary target is always a lonely person! Try to avoid late night TV and internet surfing.

Read, Read, and Read! Yes, read as

many Islamic books and articles as possible. Reading keeps your mind and eyes busy! It keeps you motivated to live your Islam and strengthens your relationship with Allah.

Find HALAAL FOOD places on and off campus Find Muslim residences in case of emergency and to make new friends (and some free food!) etc. Introduce yourself as a Muslim to your class, and let them know that you are willing to help in providing real information about islam (or to find someone from Islamic Centre to help!) Find a good quiet STUDY PLACE for yourself on or off campus. Surely you will need it!

Remind yourself of the Death and

Hereafter often. "Remember often the terminator (or destroyer) of all the pleasures [i.e. death]," the Prophet (pbuh) once reminded us. (at-Tirmidhi.)
