INTRODUCTION:

In the present age man has explored most parts of the world. Geographical, topographical and environmental information is just a click away. However, there are still certain areas where human existence is very difficult. These places cannot therefore be humanly monitored all the time. For many years now various groups and organizations have been offering different solutions. Various governments monitor such places using satellites. Unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) have also been used. But these tools provide limited view and limited real time information of the area only. Under these circumstances we need a tool that not only provides us with monitoring capabilities but also with real time information of such areas. The above mentioned project aims to develop a tool that will assist us in monitoring places where human existence is not possible or feasible.

2.

BACKGROUND:

In order to facilitate organizations belonging to various genres of work such as defence, wildlife, environmental and topographical data collection, the project aims to develop a teleoperated unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) using a toy car. Due to its small size, the UGV will be able to monitor and provide real time information of the sites where mobility

due to weather or some other constraints is limited. This information can be manipulated according to the needs of the organization employing the UGV.

3.

STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM:

The project aims to develop an unmanned ground vehicle (UGV) using a toy car. The UGV will be equipped with GPS and cameras and will be connected to the control server through GPRS. The UGV will be self powered using solar energy and will be able to monitor the sites where mobility due to weather or some other constraints is limited. The problems encountered in the project will be: a. Trying to minimize the power requirements of the UGV and designing the solar panel (size) accordingly, hence trying to keep the size to a minimum. b. Designing a circuit powerful enough to drive the cameras as well as the motors (and hence the UGV). c. Determining the system bandwidth according to the GPRS link and ensuring that the amount of data sent can be carried over the link and choosing video compression techniques accordingly. d. Designing an application at the server end for viewing the images/video captured by the UGV. e. Designing a control system as part of the server application. f. NEEDS/RESOURCES/REQUIREMENTS FOR THE PROJECT: 1) Toy Car 2) Solar Panels 3) Cameras 4) GPRS Modem 5) Controller Board 6) Digital Compass 7) GPS 8) PC
4.

SCOPE, SPECIFICATIONS AND DELIVERY OF THE PROJECT:

The project aims to implement the network based UGV in a different bandwidth range i.e. GPRS which due to its wide spread availability will make the UGV operational remotely. The UGV will be able to monitor the sites where mobility due to weather or some other constraints is limited. It is going to be implemented using multiple cameras covering all four directions of travel. The small size of the UGV will make it easier to control. The UGV is going to be self powered through a solar panel hence eliminating the need for extra batteries etc.

SCOPE: The project targets the development of a remotely controlled UGV. The project is itself an application and consists of the development of hardware and control software. Its major end-user benefits will be for: a. b. c. d. Spying purposes (defence organizations) Environmental data collection (with additional sensors) Topographical data collection Wildlife surveys

TECHNICAL/ACADEMIC GOALS: The project will provide an in-depth study of a. b. c. d. Computer networks and related client server applications. Digital image processing/GUI. Control systems. Solar power systems.

DELIVERABLES: The project will provide: y y a controlled hardware system(UGV) a viewing and controlling application

5.

PROJECT DESIGN, DEVELOPMENT, TESTING AND ANALYSIS PLAN:

PROJECT DESIGN: Cameras and GPS mounted on the UGV will collect real time and location information based on the control data. The video data will be compressed and sent on the GPRS link connecting the client (UGV) and the server application along with the location information. Similarly, the control information will be sent using the GPRS link from the server to the client. PROJECT DEVELOPMENT: The project mainly covers four areas: a. Development of the client part The objective is to develop an unarmed ground vehicle, the UGV (a toy car), for monitoring purposes controlled by the application part and connected to it through GPRS.

1) Development of a microcontroller board which is used to control the camera selection as well as the UGV movement (motor selection etc.),

where the input to the microcontroller is coming from the server end. The microcontroller is programmed using MATLAB.

2) An already developed GPRS Modem will be used for communication link between the microcontroller board installed in the toy car (client) and controller computer (server). The GPRS link will be used for control traffic from server to client and sensor data from client to server.

3) The information collected by the cameras and the GPS is output onto the GPRS link.

4) Already developed motors are used to drive the UGV where the former are in fact being powered by the solar panel mounted on top of the UGV.

5) Video Compression of the data being received by the UGV is carried out before sending it onto the GPRS link. This is done in order to reduce the bandwidth required. However image processing is not part of the project

b. Minimizing the power requirements of the UGV

After initial implementation, we will try to minimize the power usage of the UGV in order to minimize the size of the solar panel used. This will be achieved by using: 1) 2) 3) 4) Low power cameras One camera at a time during operation Low power motors (used to drive the UGV/UGV) Low power GPS

c. Development of a Client-Server Application

The objective is to develop a client-server application, connected with a vehicle/UGV to control a remotely moving camera, and subsequently plot the information using GUI at the server.

1) The application displays the movement of the UGV as well as its location. The former is achieved by means of cameras fixed in the UGV in different directions, while the latter is made possible by using a GPS fixed in the UGV. The cameras and GPS are taken as already developed modules and will not be developed as a part of the project.

2) It also includes a control system involving the movement control of UGV as well as sensor information selection. The application will be developed using image processing techniques in C/C++/Java/C Sharp. The controller board will be interfaced with an already developed GPRS Modem. The modem will connect the control information with the GPRS link and sensor input from the link i.e. video streaming and UGV location into the PC. Ensuring that the data sent fits in the bandwidth used is part of the application/client development. d. Computer networking using the Client-Server model
Elaboration regarding the networking system???

TESTING: The project once developed will be tested first in the lab and then onfield, with special assessment objectives in areas where human approach is less. ANALYSIS:????
