Phoenix rising Coventry Cathedral is not one building but two: the one standing before 1940 and the one built in its aftermath. Together they make up a new entity - a unique building that honours the past, but looks to the future. When the 13th-century Church of St Michael was bombed and its carved oak roof and stained glass windows destroyed, it could have easily become a symbol of bitterness and loss. Instead, it became a focus for the city's renewal. From the ashes In the days following the disaster, the cathedral stonemason, Jock Forbes, noticed that two of the burnt roof timbers had fallen to form a huge cross, and he set them up in the ruins. Another priest fashioned a cross from the medieval nails he found in the bombed out church. It soon became clear that the people of Coventry were going to take a hand in shaping the new Cathedral. And the winner is... It might have been possible to rebuild the cathedral in the old style, but the decision was taken to leave the ruins as a visual reminder of the destruction war brings. In 1950, a competition was launched to design a new cathedral that would link to the old one, and this was won by architect Basil Spence. Brave new world The foundation stone was laid in 1956 and Coventry Cathedral was consecrated in 1962. Spence had produced a building of its time - bold, austere, and filled with light - not at all like its medieval predecessor. Some compared it to a factory and it certainly has an industrial scale, but other descriptions call it soaring and majestic. The beauty within To fill the space, huge pieces of modern art were commissioned, such as Graham Sutherland's 75fthigh tapestry of Christ, John Piper's multi-coloured windows in the Baptistry and Sir Joseph Epstein's giant bronze sculpture of St Michael and the Devil at the entrance. German churches donated windows, the people of Sweden donated a mosaic floor and there are many more examples of gifts from across the world. Wherever you go in the new Coventry Cathedral, there are reminders that this church has a mission: Peace and Reconciliation.
