Spencer Sy Michael Uy Patrick Tan Experiment 3 Lightning and Illumination Venue: Yuchengco Lobby Sketch:

Qualitative assessment of the area according to the ff: 1. Adequacy of lighting 1. The lighting in Yuchengo Lobby is almost satisfying. The open space structure allows natural light to provide enough lighting. For cloudy and rainy days, fluoroscent lights on each division of the lobby ceiling provide the lightning. The problem however is that Yuchengco Lobby is used as a venue for booths. Natural lightning alone cannot provide enough lighting for showcasing since reliabilty runs are also situated in the lobby. 2. Suitability of lighting for the intended use of the workroom 1. We believe that the lighting is not really suitable. Again, the Yuchengo Lobby is being used for booths. Fluorescent lights are enough however the distance between the fluoroscent lights and the floor is approximately twelve feet high. In the end, it is the only the natural

light that could be relied upon. Wall lamps must be fitted on each pillar. Shadows and reflections on work surfaces 1. No reflections could be found as the Yuchengco Lobby is filled an open space venue. As for shadows, the natural light which is being blocked by the pillars of the Yuchengco Lobby is the cause of the shadows. However this does not become bothersome because the booths are set in the inner portion of the lobby. Glare arising from windows and lamps 1. There are no windows or lamps therefore glare does not apply. Obstructions to natural light source 1. The obstructions would be the pillars. Cleanliness and maintenance of lightning fixtures 1. So far the fluorescents look clean. That is, looking up from the floor. We weren't able to observe the lighting closely since it is situated about tweleve feet. Flicker/flickering movement of light 1. In our observation, it seems that the lights do not flicker much maybe about 20 seconds per flicker. Overall distribution of light in the entire workroom 1. Overall the distribution of lighting varies much. In our experiment, we divided the Yuchengco Lobby into nine sections, so far the highest value of 1200 lux was obtained in the section near to the natural light. The lowest value obtained is 130 lux which is somewhere in the corner. The reasons for such varying light distribution are the pillars, SPS building, and the high wall. In short the Yuchengco Lobby is situated as a stand alone structure but more of like a marketplace in the plaza.

Discussion of Results So far, the average lighting of Yuchengco Lobby is 423.11 lux. According to the lighting levels, this average is somewhere between moderately precise and fine. However, due to the diverse lighting distribution of theYuchengco Lobby, this is pretty useless. Such varying lighting can cause problems in booth manning because it will cause a first-come-first basis leaving the others in poorly lit zones. Recommendations Fluoroscent must be hung by a pair of steel rods. The first reason is that it will increase the diameter of lighting. Second is that in times of stormy weathers, the steel rods will prevent the fluoroscent from falling of or swaying around. Another suggestion is that wall lightings should be implemented to improve the sections which lack lighting such as the ones in the northwest and west side of the Yuchengco Lobby.
