B. You come up to your car on a frosty morning and the engine won’t start. It
is not a rare occasion. In cold weather car batteries produce less electricity,
because the chemical reaction slows down at lower temperatures. It is possible
to get the engine going. One of the most effective ways is to take the battery
out of the car and leave it in your flat for some time. W hen you put it back,
don’t forget to check the connection cables. They must be tightened.
C. Empty batteries may cause harm to the environment. That’s why we shouldn’t
throw them out as usual litter. Such negative effects as soil, water and air
pollution may occur because of the chemicals from the batteries. There are a
number of special places where you can dispose of batteries safely. You may
find special bins in supermarkets. The batteries are specially recycled and
the substances which they contain are used in other kinds of production.

Now his opponent was taller, stronger and more experienced. At some moment
it seemed that the boy lost his fighting spirit. The referee wanted to stop the fight,
because he was sure that the boy would lose. The sensei asked the referee to let
the rivals fight.
The match continued and at last the boy’s opponent made a serious mistake.
The boy took advantage of the situation and used his move immediately. He won
the match and the whole tournament and became the champion.
On the way back the boy and his teacher discussed all the moves of all the matches.
Then the boy asked the teacher the question he had been afraid to ask: “How was
that possible that I won the tournament with the only move?”
“There are two reasons for that,” the sensei replied. “First of all, the move that
you have mastered is one of the most difficult ones in judo. Secondly, the only
defense against that move for your opponent is to grip your left arm.”
So the boy’s weakness became his strength.

B. Polar bears live in the Arctic around the North Pole. Maybe, you saw some
pictures of polar bears and penguins together, but in fact it is not possible.
These two species live on the opposite sides of the planet. Polar bears are
dangerous to people and sometimes they attack humans. Such accidents are
very rare, because polar bears live in isolated regions, and they do not often
see people there. People who live in the same regions know how to behave
and what to do when they meet this dangerous animal.
C. The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by a Norwegian
explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14
December 1911. It was five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon
Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned
safely to their base. Later they learnt that Scott and his four companions had
died on their return journey. Today there is a permanent scientific research
station at the South Pole called the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

А cookie thief
This story happened at an airport. A woman was waiting for her flight which had
been delayed. She had bought a packet of biscuits and a book to read in one of the
local shops. There were four hours left before the take-off of her plane.
Some time later she noticed a man who came up and took a seat next to her. He
began reading a newspaper, too. While he was reading, he was grabbing cookies
from the bag in between. The woman tried to pay no attention to what he was
doing. The man took more and more cookies from the bag and the woman thought,
“I would hit him if I weren’t so nice and polite.” So they both took the cookies
one by one until only one piece was left. The woman wondered what the man was
going to do. He smiled at her, took the last cookie and broke it in two halves. He

There lived a poor boy who did not have enough money to buy food. He walked

А mother wanted her son to be more interested in playing the piano. He was
making progress more slowly than she expected. To motivate the boy she bought
tickets for a performance of a great pianist Ignace Paderewski. In the evening they
arrived at the concert hall and soon found their seats in the first row. They saw
a majestic piano on the stage. The mother noticed her old friend in the audience
and they started to talk about something. At that moment the boy disappeared.
Precisely at 8 o’clock the lights went down and the spotlights came on. The
audience noticed a little boy sitting on the bench before the piano. He began
playing one of those few tunes he knew — Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. His mother
blushed in embarrassment (покраснела от смущения). She understood that she
had no time to take her son away from the stage. At the same moment the pianist
appeared on the stage and came up to the piano.
The audience began to make noise. They did not understand what the boy was
doing there. But Paderewski gave them a sign to calm down.
.Then he whispered to the boy, “Keep playing, everything is fine.” Leaning over,
the musician touched the keyboard with his left hand and began filling in the bass
part. He started to improvise. So they both were playing the simple tune.
The crowd was amazed at the beauty of the music. There was a complete silence
in the audience.
The boy became a professional musician some years later.

Easter Island
Jacob Roggeveen, a Dutch explorer, was the first European visitor of Easter Island.
He arrived at the island in 1722. He named it Paaseiland (Easter Island) to mark
the day of the arrival. In 1770 another expedition from Peru visited the place.
44 Т ес^
The Spanish explorers spent several days there and found out that about 3,000
people lived on the island. Four years later Sir James Cook, a British navigator,
discovered on his arrival that the population had become smaller (about 700 men
and 30 women) after a civil war.
In 1786 a French sailor, Jean-Francois de Galaup, found about 2,000 people on
the island.
In 1862 many people of the island were taken to Peru as slaves (рабы). Epidemics
of smallpox (оспа) broke out at the same time. So there were only 111 people left
on the island by 1877.
In 1888 Easter Island became a part of Chile and was used mostly for sheep
breeding.
Easter Island is an isolated triangle 14 miles long and 7 miles wide. It was formed
by volcanic activity. The island has many hills and caves which extend deep into
mountains of volcanic rock. The biggest volcano of tbe island is Rano Kao. Its
highest point Mount Terevaka reaches 600 m above sea level.
The climate of the island is subtropical. The lowest temperatures are in July and
August (18 °C) and the highest — in February (28 °C), the summer season in the
southern hemisphere. Winters are quite mild. The rainiest month is April, though
the island has year-round rainfall.
Flanga Roa is the largest village with a population of 3,300 people. Ships usually
cast anchor not far from this place. Easter Island became a World Heritage site
in 1995. Now its population is mixed: it is mostly of Polynesian origin and the
descendants (потомки) of the Long-Ears and Short-Ears still live on the island.
Spanish is the main language here.
The island is famous for its large statues. They were called moai and represented
the ancestors. Moai were set up all along the coastline. The islanders believed that
the living had a relationship with the dead. They thought that the dead helped the
living in everything.

talk to them if there is someone else in your room. You know, I
don’t have brothers or sisters. But I have my own room.
Ruth: O f course, I feel a bit worried, because I have lived in this flat for
fourteen years. I think that I will miss it.
Sam: I am sure everything will be fine! You shouldn’t really think much
about that. I am sure these changes are going to be good.
Ruth: Oh, thank you for your support. Come to see our new flat next
week!
Sam: Sure! Keep in touch!

Lily: Harry, do you ever play computer games?
Harry: You see, I used to play them more often a couple of years ago.
Now I am in the ninth grade at school and I have to spend more
time on my studies rather than on playing.
Lily: I can’t believe that you don’t play at all. Come on, tell me the truth.
Harry: OK. I may spend a few hours in front of the screen mostly at the
weekend.
Lily: Are there any cool games you would recommend to me?
Harry: I prefer strategies, which are not so popular nowadays as they
used to be a few years ago.
Lily: Oh, no, strategies are not for me. They are too boring.
Harry: No way! People are just too lazy to concentrate on them.
Lily: Maybe, yes... I like quests, when you look for some things and
solve riddles.
Harry: Aren’t these quests very long and boring, too?
Lily: You know, tastes differ. Let’s not argue about that. I am sure, you
are right — I have to spend less time on games after all. But I will
need your advice, Harry.
Harry: And when are you going to stop playing games?
Lily: Oh, I am not sure yet. Maybe in a month or two, I will think
about it.

Зеап: Peter, are you going to the гоо with our class on Sunday?
Peter: I don’t think so. Is it necessary?
Jean: No, it’s for anyone who wants to. It will be fun!
Peter: I am not sure it is the best idea to keep animals in cages. They are
born to be free, and people keep them in captivity. I feel sorry for
these poor creatures.
Jean: I can’t fully agree with you, Peter. Very often animals in zoos live
longer than in the wild. They get better food and care.
Peter: I am against zoos, sorry. It is much more interesting to look at
animals in their natural habitat.
Jean: But it is so expensive! To watch elephants you have to go to Africa
or to India. To see polar bears you have to go to the N orth Pole.
Are there many people who can afford this?
Peter: O f course, not. But you can watch videos on TV and on the
Internet. There are thousands of them. Do you know, why I think
so now?
Jean: Why? I am getting really curious...
Peter: We bought three parrots a couple of years ago. We let them out of
the cage but they spoilt our wallpaper and curtains and many other
things and we had to keep them in the cage all the time. Then
I asked Mom to sell them or take them back to the pet shop.
I understood that it was not right to keep them longer.
Jean: Oh, now I see the point, Peter. See you on Monday, then!

Sid: Hi, Mary! You look a bit tired. Are you all right?
Mary: Hi, Sid! You see, we’ve had a very busy week at school. Besides,
I have to make a poster at the weekend.
Sid: W hat kind of poster? W hat subject do you need it for?
Mary: It’s for my Biology class next week. I have a task to draw a poster
about endangered animals. You know, such animals which are at
risk of dying out.
гг Sid: Oh, I know, sure. And what’s the problem? I believe you don’t have
enough time for that.
Mary: It’s not about time. I am afraid I can’t draw or paint very well. And
I have no one to help me.
Sid: I have a good idea. Why don’t we print out some pictures and put
them on a big sheet of paper? W hat we have to do is just to write
some text below the photos.
Mary: I didn’t think about that. Will you help me with the printing?
Sid: No problem. I have a very good printer. You may send me the
necessary photos by e-mail. I’ll print them out and you will come
round tonight to get them.
Mary: Thank you so much, Sid! You are a true friend!

assistant: Hello, how can I help you?
Ted: Good afternoon. I am looking for new headphones.
S. a.: We have a wide choice of them. W hat price do you have in mind?
Ted: I think they shouldn’t be more expensive than 25 pounds.
S. a.: OK. Do you want headphones or earphones?
Ted: You mean if I want bigger ones that I put on my head or smaller
ones that I put into my ears?
S. a.: Exactly.
Ted: Oh, I need bigger headphones. I use them with my laptop when
I watch films or play games or listen to the music.
S. a.: Does the colour make any difference? I suppose that black
headphones would be the best choice.
Ted: Right. Are there any wireless bluetooth models that work on
batteries?
S. a.: O f course there are, but if you want the best sound quality I would
recommend you to buy usual headphones. Nice wireless models
cost more than 50 pounds.
Ted: Oh, thank you for your advice. I’ll take these black BEEPS
headphones then.

Tom: Hi, Linda! W hat about your Maths test on Friday? Did you pass it?
Linda: Hi, Tom! Actually it was not that difficult. I thought it would
be much worse.
Tom: Do you know your mark?
Linda: Not yet. The teacher is going to tell us about the results at the end
of the week. And what about you?
Tom: Oh, our class is going to take the same test tomorrow and I am
afraid that I won’t cope with it. The thing is that I was ill all last
week and did not understand the material. Do you remember the
tasks?
Linda: Oh, now I see. Usually you don’t have problems with Maths and I
was surprised why you asked me about the test at all. I think that I
have some rough papers I used during the lesson with all the tasks.
Never mind, I remember everything perfectly well.
Tom: Thank you, Linda. You are very helpful. Shall I come to you to take
the samples?
Linda: I could just send you the photos, but I think it will be better if you
come round yourself I will explain everything to you.
Tom: Oh, thanks. Is 7 p.m. OK?
Linda: Yeah, that would be fine. I’ll be waiting for you.

М о т : John, don’t you think it’s time to change the wallpaper in your
room?
John: Oh, Mom, I don’t really think so.
1 Mom: But look, the cat has spoilt it everywhere. Now your pet is grown
up and I hope it won’t be scratching the wallpaper and peeling it
off the walls.
John: Maybe we could do it at the end of this school year. Mom?
Mom: There will be a lot of other things to do in summer. Believe me, it
won’t take long. O f course, you will have to move the furniture and
then clean up the mess. But I really feel ashamed when someone
comes and sees your room.
John: OK, Mom! Will you choose the wallpaper yourself or should I
help you?
Mom: I think you need some lighter shade of green or blue. There is
not enough light in your room now. I think Dad and I will buy
the wallpaper ourselves. But you can look for something on the
Internet and show us what you would like to buy.
John: No problem. W hen are we going to start?
Mom: I think we will do it next weekend. It won’t take long — just half
a day or so. *

Tanya: Hi, Philip! I saw a missed call from you on my phone a couple of
minutes ago. W hat did you want to ask me about?
Philip: Hi, Tanya, thanks for calling me back. O ur teacher, Mrs Harris,
asked us to call the students who were absent and tell them that
she was going away for a week. We do not need to come early
tomorrow.
Tanya: Oh, thank you, Philip! And why didn’t you just send me a message?
Philip: You see, it’s 10 p.m. now and I was not sure that you would read
my message.
Tanya: Right. I usually don’t read messages before going to sleep. I was
brushing my teeth and missed your call, you know. : .v
Philip: And when I came back home, I completely forgot to call you
because I had so many things to do, sorry. ,
Tanya: Never mind. Everything is fine. I don’t have to get up at 7
tomorrow. And this means I... might watch a film today. ;
Philip: A film? Are you really going to stay up so late?
Tanya: Oh, it is not a feature film. It is a short documentary about the
Bermuda Triangle. Just 45 minutes.
Philip: Oh, that’s quite a different thing! Good night, see you tomorrow!
Tanya: Bye! Thank you once again!

Mag: Hi, Grandpa! Nice to see you again!
Grandpa: Hi, Mag. How are you? It’s been a long way today.
Mag: Did you go by train? It is so hot and stuffy today!
Grandpa: Yes, I got on the train at 12 o’clock. Going by bus in such
weather would be even worse. I think there’s going to be
a thunderstorm tonight.
Mag: Come in. How long are you going to stay with us?
Grandpa: For three or four days. It depends.
Mag: W hat does it depend on? I think you have enough free time
to stay here for a week. I would like to go to the cinema and to the
park, and to the zoo with you. There is a n ...
Grandpa: All right, all right. I am not in a hurry. Get me some water
to drink first. So what else is there? W hat did you say?
Mag: There is an interesting exhibition at the Space Museum. I would
like to visit it with you. Please...
Grandpa: OK, Mag. Let’s have a short rest and then we will discuss what we are
going to do. When is your mom coming back? Has you dad returned
from his business trip?
Mag: Mom is coming back in an hour and a half. And Dad is going to
be here tomorrow.
