1. This helps to protect nature

2. It is necessary for your safety
3. Useful advice
4. Some advice to save money
A. Remember some very im portant rules if go out in frosty weather or find
yourself in a very cold place. You should put on warm clothes but it must not
keep you from moving freely. Be sure to choose right shoes and hats. Several
layers of clothes will keep you warm, because there will be more air between
them. Natural materials are better than synthetic ones. Keep moving all the
time — don’t stand in one place. And the last, but not least — breathe with
your nose.
Тест 1

B. You come up to your car on a frosty morning and the engine won’t start. It
is not a rare occasion. In cold weather car batteries produce less electricity,
because the chemical reaction slows down at lower temperatures. It is possible
to get the engine going. One of the most effective ways is to take the battery
out of the car and leave it in your flat for some time. W hen you put it back,
don’t forget to check the connection cables. They must be tightened.
C. Empty batteries may cause harm to the environment. That’s why we shouldn’t
throw them out as usual litter. Such negative effects as soil, water and air
pollution may occur because of the chemicals from the batteries. There are a
number of special places where you can dispose of batteries safely. You may
find special bins in supermarkets. The batteries are specially recycled and
the substances which they contain are used in other kinds of production.

А boy who became а judo champion

This is a story of a ten-year-old boy who began to study judo. He had lost his
left arm in a bad accident. An old Japanese judo master began to teach him.
A few months passed. The lessons were really successful. But there was one thing
that worried the boy: he had learnt only one move from his coach.
W hen the boy asked the teacher why it was so, the sensei replied, “You have to
know only one move, don’t worry.”
The boy kept on training. Some time later his teacher sent him to a tournament.
The boy won the first two matches without great effort. The third one was more
difficult, but he managed to defeat his opponent that time, too. The boy had used
only one and the same move.
The boy moved on to the finals.
Тест 1

Now his opponent was taller, stronger and more experienced. At some moment
it seemed that the boy lost his fighting spirit. The referee wanted to stop the fight,
because he was sure that the boy would lose. The sensei asked the referee to let
the rivals fight.
The match continued and at last the boy’s opponent made a serious mistake.
The boy took advantage of the situation and used his move immediately. He won
the match and the whole tournament and became the champion.
On the way back the boy and his teacher discussed all the moves of all the matches.
Then the boy asked the teacher the question he had been afraid to ask: “How was
that possible that I won the tournament with the only move?”
“There are two reasons for that,” the sensei replied. “First of all, the move that
you have mastered is one of the most difficult ones in judo. Secondly, the only
defense against that move for your opponent is to grip your left arm.”
So the boy’s weakness became his strength.

Whose idea was that to practise only one judo move?

1) The boy’s.
2) The teacher’s.
3) It was a usual way of learning.
Ответ: EH
The boy defeated his final rival using...
1) his secret move.
2) only his left hand.
3) his usual move.
Ответ: EH
10 The boy won the fight because...
1) he had become stronger thanks to his training.
2) his opponent was frightened of the boy’s secret judo move.
3) his teacher was a clever man who hadn’t told the real secret to his
student at once.

her but the other zoo visitors and zoo-keepers managed to scare the hear off

B. Polar bears live in the Arctic around the North Pole. Maybe, you saw some
pictures of polar bears and penguins together, but in fact it is not possible.
These two species live on the opposite sides of the planet. Polar bears are
dangerous to people and sometimes they attack humans. Such accidents are
very rare, because polar bears live in isolated regions, and they do not often
see people there. People who live in the same regions know how to behave
and what to do when they meet this dangerous animal.

C. The first expedition to reach the geographic South Pole was led by a Norwegian
explorer Roald Amundsen. He and four others arrived at the pole on 14
December 1911. It was five weeks ahead of a British party led by Robert Falcon
Scott as part of the Terra Nova Expedition. Amundsen and his team returned
safely to their base. Later they learnt that Scott and his four companions had
died on their return journey. Today there is a permanent scientific research
station at the South Pole called the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station.

А cookie thief
This story happened at an airport. A woman was waiting for her flight which had
been delayed. She had bought a packet of biscuits and a book to read in one of the
local shops. There were four hours left before the take-off of her plane.
Some time later she noticed a man who came up and took a seat next to her. He
began reading a newspaper, too. While he was reading, he was grabbing cookies
from the bag in between. The woman tried to pay no attention to what he was
doing. The man took more and more cookies from the bag and the woman thought,
“I would hit him if I weren’t so nice and polite.” So they both took the cookies
one by one until only one piece was left. The woman wondered what the man was
going to do. He smiled at her, took the last cookie and broke it in two halves. He

2. How a fridge works
3. What you like is not always healthy
4. Technological changes
А. Before refrigerators were invented people used to keep food in special iceboxes.
They were like modern refrigerators but they didn’t run on electricity and
people just put usual ice inside. Besides, some people had cool cellars (dark
and cool places under houses) and even ice houses where food was kept cool
most of the year. People also used smoking, salting and drying as effective
ways of preserving food.

B. Eating too much salt is bad for people’s health. Salt may cause high blood
pressure. It is especially dangerous for elderly people. Many people who
suffer from high blood pressure would be healthier if they ate less salt.
Salt is tasty, just like sugar, that is why most people like it and don’t think
about its effects.

C. Healthy sleep is possible when you follow some simple rules. First of all you
should go to bed and get up at the same time every day. Try not to stay in
bed too long. More than 8.5 hours of sleep is not recommended. Your gadgets
and TV may affect. So when you are already in bed, switch everything off.
The right temperature is also very important. And finally, try not to sleep
during the day. Sleeping pills are not the best solution either.

All the students were surprised. There were no questions and no pictures on
their papers — just a small black dot. The professor was glad to see the surprised
expression on the students’ faces. Then he explained the task: they students were
supposed to write about what they saw. It was obvious that everyone could see a
different thing in the same black dot. Most of the students found the task very
difficult and they didn’t have the slightest idea what to write.
At the end of the class the teacher collected the papers and began reading the
answers of the students aloud. All of them paid their attention only to the black
dot in the centre of the page. After the professor had read everything aloud he said:

Fences and bridges

Once there lived two brothers. They were neighbours and each of them had his
own farm. They were always ready to share everything and helped each other
in any possible way. Once they had a serious conflict — it was for the first time
within 40 years. The conflict began with a small misunderstanding and finally it
turned into a great quarrel. The brothers did not even want to talk to each other.
One morning John heard a knock on the door. He opened it and saw a carpenter
with a toolbox. That man was looking for a job and he asked John if he had anything
to offer. The elder brother pointed to the creek near the second farm. He said that
his younger brother made it himself using a bulldozer. Previously there was a green
meadow between them.
And John said that he had even a better idea. He asked the carpenter to build an
8-foot fence so that he didn’t see his brother any more.
The carpenter agreed because he understood the situation. He took some nails
and found a number of poles. John showed him where he could get the wood for
the fence. The elder brother himself drove to town for food.
The carpenter worked really hard all day long. At sunset, when John returned,
the job was done. The farmer’s eyes opened wide and his jaw dropped. He did not
see any fence — he saw a bridge over the creek. It was a fine bridge with handrails
(перила). Then he saw his younger brother coming across with his arms stretched
towards John.
34 Тест 5

The younger brother said, “It’s surprising that you have built this bridge John,
after all the rude words I have said to you.” The brothers made a few steps forward,
stopped in the middle of the bridge, and shook hands.
They asked the carpenter to stay for a few more days. They said that they had a
lot of work for him to do, but the man replied that he couldn’t stay longer. There
were many more bridges to build...
Every day we have to choose whether to build a fence or a bridge.

А helping hand
А mother wanted her son to be more interested in playing the piano. He was
making progress more slowly than she expected. To motivate the boy she bought
tickets for a performance of a great pianist Ignace Paderewski. In the evening they
arrived at the concert hall and soon found their seats in the first row. They saw
a majestic piano on the stage. The mother noticed her old friend in the audience
and they started to talk about something. At that moment the boy disappeared.
Precisely at 8 o’clock the lights went down and the spotlights came on. The
audience noticed a little boy sitting on the bench before the piano. He began
playing one of those few tunes he knew — Twinkle, Twinkle Little Star. His mother
blushed in embarrassment (покраснела от смущения). She understood that she
had no time to take her son away from the stage. At the same moment the pianist
appeared on the stage and came up to the piano.
The audience began to make noise. They did not understand what the boy was
doing there. But Paderewski gave them a sign to calm down.
.Then he whispered to the boy, “Keep playing, everything is fine.” Leaning over,
the musician touched the keyboard with his left hand and began filling in the bass
part. He started to improvise. So they both were playing the simple tune.
The crowd was amazed at the beauty of the music. There was a complete silence
in the audience.
The boy became a professional musician some years later.
In our life it is very important to receive a helping hand, though we often do not
notice it. And we ourselves have a lot of chances to give a helping hand to other
people. It is impossible to achieve something without learning from others and
without their support. That is why we should share everything we know with other
people when we have a chance for that.

Easter Island
Jacob Roggeveen, a Dutch explorer, was the first European visitor of Easter Island.
He arrived at the island in 1722. He named it Paaseiland (Easter Island) to mark
the day of the arrival. In 1770 another expedition from Peru visited the place.
44 Т ес^

The Spanish explorers spent several days there and found out that about 3,000
people lived on the island. Four years later Sir James Cook, a British navigator,
discovered on his arrival that the population had become smaller (about 700 men
and 30 women) after a civil war.
In 1786 a French sailor, Jean-Francois de Galaup, found about 2,000 people on
the island.
In 1862 many people of the island were taken to Peru as slaves (рабы). Epidemics
of smallpox (оспа) broke out at the same time. So there were only 111 people left
on the island by 1877.
In 1888 Easter Island became a part of Chile and was used mostly for sheep
breeding.
Easter Island is an isolated triangle 14 miles long and 7 miles wide. It was formed
by volcanic activity. The island has many hills and caves which extend deep into
mountains of volcanic rock. The biggest volcano of tbe island is Rano Kao. Its
highest point Mount Terevaka reaches 600 m above sea level.
The climate of the island is subtropical. The lowest temperatures are in July and
August (18 °C) and the highest — in February (28 °C), the summer season in the
southern hemisphere. Winters are quite mild. The rainiest month is April, though
the island has year-round rainfall.
Flanga Roa is the largest village with a population of 3,300 people. Ships usually
cast anchor not far from this place. Easter Island became a World Heritage site
in 1995. Now its population is mixed: it is mostly of Polynesian origin and the
descendants (потомки) of the Long-Ears and Short-Ears still live on the island.
Spanish is the main language here.
The island is famous for its large statues. They were called moai and represented
the ancestors. Moai were set up all along the coastline. The islanders believed that
the living had a relationship with the dead. They thought that the dead helped the
living in everything.
The first European explorers of Easter Island came from Spain.

Dialogue A
Mary: Hi, Jim! Are you going to the concert of “The Spiky Monkeys” with
us tonight?
Jim: Hi, Mary! I am afraid I am not, because my relatives from the USA
are coming to us. They are going to stay here for a few days.
Mary: Oh, never mind. O f course, you should spend more time with
them!
Jim: Mary, may I ask you to buy me a CD? Г11 give you ... eh ... twenty
dollars, I think that’ll be enough.
Mary: I am sure that a CD is even cheaper. Do you mean their latest
album “Summer in Brighton?”
Jim: Sure. I usually buy music on the Internet, but this time I want to
have a CD, because there must be their autographs on it.

Магу: I have heard about that, too. And if there aren’t any autographs?
Jim: H m ... Will you buy some souvenirs for me then? I am a big fan
of the band, you know.
Mary: OK. No problem. If I have some doubt I will send you a text
message.
Jim: Thank you so much. See you!
Mary: Bye!

Dialogue В
Ruth: Oh, Sam, haven’t seen you for ages! How is it going?
Sam: Hi, Ruth! I am fine, thanks. I’ve heard you are moving. Is that
true?
Ruth: Yes, but we are staying here, in the same street. We are just going
to change the flat.
Sam: Oh, that’s nice. And why have you decided to move at all?
Ruth: It’s because of my younger brother. O ur parents think that each
of us needs a separate room, because we are getting older and we
often distract each other from doing homework. Besides, we need
more space, because our room is really small.
Sam: That’s right. I understand. You can’t just invite your friends and
talk to them if there is someone else in your room. You know, I
don’t have brothers or sisters. But I have my own room.
Ruth: O f course, I feel a bit worried, because I have lived in this flat for
fourteen years. I think that I will miss it.
Sam: I am sure everything will be fine! You shouldn’t really think much
about that. I am sure these changes are going to be good.
Ruth: Oh, thank you for your support. Come to see our new flat next
week!
Sam: Sure! Keep in touch!

Dialogue A
Lily: Harry, do you ever play computer games?
Harry: You see, I used to play them more often a couple of years ago.
Now I am in the ninth grade at school and I have to spend more
time on my studies rather than on playing.
Lily: I can’t believe that you don’t play at all. Come on, tell me the truth.
Harry: OK. I may spend a few hours in front of the screen mostly at the
weekend.
Lily: Are there any cool games you would recommend to me?
Harry: I prefer strategies, which are not so popular nowadays as they
used to be a few years ago.
Lily: Oh, no, strategies are not for me. They are too boring.
Harry: No way! People are just too lazy to concentrate on them.
Lily: Maybe, yes... I like quests, when you look for some things and
solve riddles.
Harry: Aren’t these quests very long and boring, too?
Lily: You know, tastes differ. Let’s not argue about that. I am sure, you
are right — I have to spend less time on games after all. But I will
need your advice, Harry.
Harry: And when are you going to stop playing games?
Lily: Oh, I am not sure yet. Maybe in a month or two, I will think
about it.

Зеап: Peter, are you going to the гоо with our class on Sunday?
Peter: I don’t think so. Is it necessary?
Jean: No, it’s for anyone who wants to. It will be fun!
Peter: I am not sure it is the best idea to keep animals in cages. They are
born to be free, and people keep them in captivity. I feel sorry for
these poor creatures.
Jean: I can’t fully agree with you, Peter. Very often animals in zoos live
longer than in the wild. They get better food and care.
Peter: I am against zoos, sorry. It is much more interesting to look at
animals in their natural habitat.
Jean: But it is so expensive! To watch elephants you have to go to Africa
or to India. To see polar bears you have to go to the N orth Pole.
Are there many people who can afford this?
Peter: O f course, not. But you can watch videos on TV and on the
Internet. There are thousands of them. Do you know, why I think
so now?
Jean: Why? I am getting really curious...
Peter: We bought three parrots a couple of years ago. We let them out of
the cage but they spoilt our wallpaper and curtains and many other
things and we had to keep them in the cage all the time. Then
I asked Mom to sell them or take them back to the pet shop.
I understood that it was not right to keep them longer.
Jean: Oh, now I see the point, Peter. See you on Monday, then!

Sid: Hi, Mary! You look a bit tired. Are you all right?
Mary: Hi, Sid! You see, we’ve had a very busy week at school. Besides,
I have to make a poster at the weekend.
Sid: W hat kind of poster? W hat subject do you need it for?
Mary: It’s for my Biology class next week. I have a task to draw a poster
about endangered animals. You know, such animals which are at
risk of dying out.
гг Sid: Oh, I know, sure. And what’s the problem? I believe you don’t have
enough time for that.
Mary: It’s not about time. I am afraid I can’t draw or paint very well. And
I have no one to help me.
Sid: I have a good idea. Why don’t we print out some pictures and put
them on a big sheet of paper? W hat we have to do is just to write
some text below the photos.
Mary: I didn’t think about that. Will you help me with the printing?
Sid: No problem. I have a very good printer. You may send me the
necessary photos by e-mail. I’ll print them out and you will come
round tonight to get them.
Mary: Thank you so much, Sid! You are a true friend!

assistant: Hello, how can I help you?
Ted: Good afternoon. I am looking for new headphones.
S. a.: We have a wide choice of them. W hat price do you have in mind?
Ted: I think they shouldn’t be more expensive than 25 pounds.
S. a.: OK. Do you want headphones or earphones?
Ted: You mean if I want bigger ones that I put on my head or smaller
ones that I put into my ears?
S. a.: Exactly.
Ted: Oh, I need bigger headphones. I use them with my laptop when
I watch films or play games or listen to the music.
S. a.: Does the colour make any difference? I suppose that black
headphones would be the best choice.
Ted: Right. Are there any wireless bluetooth models that work on
batteries?
S. a.: O f course there are, but if you want the best sound quality I would
recommend you to buy usual headphones. Nice wireless models
cost more than 50 pounds.
Ted: Oh, thank you for your advice. I’ll take these black BEEPS
headphones then.

Tom: Hi, Linda! W hat about your Maths test on Friday? Did you pass it?
Linda: Hi, Tom! Actually it was not that difficult. I thought it would
be much worse.
Tom: Do you know your mark?
Linda: Not yet. The teacher is going to tell us about the results at the end
of the week. And what about you?
Tom: Oh, our class is going to take the same test tomorrow and I am
afraid that I won’t cope with it. The thing is that I was ill all last
week and did not understand the material. Do you remember the
tasks?
Linda: Oh, now I see. Usually you don’t have problems with Maths and I
was surprised why you asked me about the test at all. I think that I
have some rough papers I used during the lesson with all the tasks.
Never mind, I remember everything perfectly well.
Tom: Thank you, Linda. You are very helpful. Shall I come to you to take
the samples?
Linda: I could just send you the photos, but I think it will be better if you
come round yourself I will explain everything to you.
Tom: Oh, thanks. Is 7 p.m. OK?
Linda: Yeah, that would be fine. I’ll be waiting for you.

М о т : John, don’t you think it’s time to change the wallpaper in your
room?
John: Oh, Mom, I don’t really think so.
1 Mom: But look, the cat has spoilt it everywhere. Now your pet is grown
up and I hope it won’t be scratching the wallpaper and peeling it
off the walls.
John: Maybe we could do it at the end of this school year. Mom?
Mom: There will be a lot of other things to do in summer. Believe me, it
won’t take long. O f course, you will have to move the furniture and
then clean up the mess. But I really feel ashamed when someone
comes and sees your room.
John: OK, Mom! Will you choose the wallpaper yourself or should I
help you?
Mom: I think you need some lighter shade of green or blue. There is
not enough light in your room now. I think Dad and I will buy
the wallpaper ourselves. But you can look for something on the
Internet and show us what you would like to buy.
John: No problem. W hen are we going to start?

minutes ago. W hat did you want to ask me about?
Philip: Hi, Tanya, thanks for calling me back. O ur teacher, Mrs Harris,
asked us to call the students who were absent and tell them that
she was going away for a week. We do not need to come early
tomorrow.
Tanya: Oh, thank you, Philip! And why didn’t you just send me a message?
Philip: You see, it’s 10 p.m. now and I was not sure that you would read
my message.
Tanya: Right. I usually don’t read messages before going to sleep. I was
brushing my teeth and missed your call, you know. : .v
Philip: And when I came back home, I completely forgot to call you
because I had so many things to do, sorry. ,
Tanya: Never mind. Everything is fine. I don’t have to get up at 7
tomorrow. And this means I... might watch a film today. ;
Philip: A film? Are you really going to stay up so late?
Tanya: Oh, it is not a feature film. It is a short documentary about the
Bermuda Triangle. Just 45 minutes.
Philip: Oh, that’s quite a different thing! Good night, see you tomorrow!
Tanya: Bye! Thank you once again!

Public opinion
Once a boy, an old man and a donkey were going to town. The boy was riding
the donkey and the old man was walking. People around were looking at them
as they were going through the villages on the way. They remarked that it was a
shame that the old man was walking and the boy, who was much younger, was
riding. The boy and the old man decided that those people might be right: so the
man mounted the donkey and the boy went on foot.
Some time later they were passing by another group of people who said, “W hat
a shame! The old man makes such a little boy walk!” And the man and the boy
decided to walk together.
Soon other people saw those two walking by the donkey. They were surprised
and said that it was really stupid to walk instead of riding the donkey.
Can you guess what happened next?
Now they both were riding the donkey. Again some people noticed them and
said that it was an awful thing to put such a heavy weight on a poor donkey.
The boy and the man agreed and they decided to carry the donkey. W hen they
were crossing the bridge, the donkey fell into the river and drowned.

Easter Island
The total area of Easter Island is about 64 square miles. It is located in the South
Pacific Ocean, 2.300 miles from the coast of Chile. Its original name was Rapa
Nui, and the modern name “Easter Island” was given to it by Dutch explorers when
they arrived there in 1722.
The island’s economy is based on tourism. Easter Island is well known thanks
to its huge stone statues which are very old. No one knows for sure what those
huge figures were made for, but they obviously played some role in the life of the
ancient civilisation that inhabited the island.
Archaeologists say that there were three cultural periods in the history of Easter
Island; the early (700-850 AD), the middle (1050-1680) and the late (post-1680)
period. During the middle period some of the statues were rebuilt and became bigger
and heavier. The biggest statue from the middle period is about 32 feet tall and its
weight is about 82 tons. The late period was the time of civil wars and destruction.
There were two main tribes on the island: the Short-Ears and the Long-Ears.
They began a war, and the population of the island was greatly reduced.
