There has been a flurry of activity of late! On May 31 we cosponsored (with the Library Company) a very stimulating talk given by Todd Pattison on 19th century bookbinder Benjamin Bradley. Todd has been studying Bradley for a long time now and had some really interesting new things to say about his development as a businessman. Alice Austin was able to collect thirty books for Philadelphia Artists Books Travel to Venice. I saw many of you at the opening on June 3rd at the Athenaeum. It was such a nice gathering. Now she is wondering how she will manage to carry all the books on and off the plane and to the Scoula in Venice! Many thanks go to Alice (and as always, her husband Jon Snyder) for all their hard work. And on June 15, DVC members gather on the steps of the Library at Winterthur ten DVC members visited the book conservation department at Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library hosted by DVC member Chela Metzger. It was a very informative morning followed by a lunch outside. It was a beautiful day and some people stayed the afternoon to wander the gardens, museum, and house. The summer is looking to be rather quiet (maybe that is good) but I would like to schedule one of our popular Fast, Friendly, Free Events. Got any ideas? For those of you have never attended one, they are very short, usually held on a Saturday morning or afternoon and no money exchanges hands, except for supplies. We have tried various things like paste papers, label making, paper folding, unique structures, and a stash exchange. It is low-key and fun. I know many of you have something you could share! Please email me with ideas. dvcgbw@verizon.net Jennifer Rosner Chapter Chair

This time in the blogoshpere we look at the short lived, but information packed, Closure. Closure, is the blog at http://www.bookclasp.com, A website about constructing metal book clasps, bosses, and other types of book hardware, showing examples of book clasp repair and restoration. Started on April 1, 2009 and ended on April 29, 2009, Closure featured 12 posts about projects ranging from decorative metal work to the recreation of historic claps. My favorite post, Clasp Replica II, was posted on April 2, 2009 and details the recreation of a missing bible clasp. The steps pictured are clear and descriptions concise. Although Closure seems to have come to just that, the archive of posts and the main site bookclasp.com are worth checking out. Valeria Kremser Box Turtle Press http://www.boxturtlepress.com

eriko takahashi Wins purChase prize

Our members exhibition opened at the Athenaeum of Philadelphia on Friday, June 3rd. The event was well attended by many GBW members, friends, family and also out-of-town guests from the American Institute for Conservation conference. Excited members were busy discussing their books and socializing. At 6pm Eileen Magee gave a short welcome speech which included an overview of the Athenaeum. Next, Alice said thank you to Sandra Tatman, Eileen Magee and the Athenaeum staff for hosting the exhibition, followed by the announcement of the purchase prize. Barbara Prior, Librarian of the Clarence Ward Art Library at Oberlin College, selected the winner via a video conference with Alice and her colleague, Ruth Hughes. Eriko Takahashis book, PEACE CRANE 3.11.2011, will join over 700 artists books in the collection at Oberlin which has a comprehensive on-line catalog. www.oberlin.edu/library/art/artistsbooks.html Erikos book was designed, written and bound in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake, March 11, 2011. It is a heartfelt and beautiful book. It was a pleasure to curate the diverse and wonderful books which reflect the talents of our members. There is so much to learn from each other - keep up the good work! Alice Austin
