Science has benefited the world in so many ways and the achievements that we have made throughout history using these discoveries and technologies that are associated with scientific achievements are extraordinary. We have developed beyond boundaries as a united world and Science has been there to set the trend that almost all barriers can be broken for us to progress further and reach limitless goals. Science is an enterprise that builds and organizes knowledge in the form of testable explanations and predictions about the world to help the world. This is done partly through observation and experimentation that tries to simulate natural events under controlled conditions. Taken entirety, scientific methods and discoveries have allowed for highly creative problem solving to improve the quality of life.

The process of science is a way of building knowledge about the universe and constructing new ideas that illuminate the world around us. Those ideas are inherently tentative, but as they cycle through the process of science again and again and are tested and retested in different ways to allow us to become increasingly confident in them. Furthermore, through this same iterative process, ideas are modified, expanded, and combined into more powerful explanations to construct and integrate scientific knowledge that is useful for all sorts of things from designing bridges, to slowing climate change, to prompting frequent hand washing during flu season. Scientific knowledge allows us to develop new technologies, solve practical problems, and make informed decisions both individually and collectively. Because its products are so useful, the

process of science is intertwined with those applications. Science can benefit us in so many ways such as: New scientific knowledge may lead to new applications.

For example, the discovery of the structure of DNA was a fundamental breakthrough in biology. It formed the underpinnings of research that would ultimately lead to a wide variety of practical applications, including DNA fingerprinting, genetically engineered crops, and tests for genetic diseases.

For example, the possibility of genetically engineering bacteria to cheaply produce cutting-edge malaria drugs has motivated one researcher to continue his studies of synthetic biology.

This list can go on and on however in a nutshell, Science has extended the horizons of human knowledge as it has added immensely to man's capacity for work. Construction

jobs no longer require Herculean feats of strength as machines perform the most difficult tasks with ease. Diseases are no longer as dreaded as they were before new medical research and breakthroughs have been made. Science has developed cures for most and eradicated many diseases that plagued the world. Painless surgery is indeed a blessing and now the blind can be helped to see and the deaf can be made to hear. All these have been made possible by the application of science and technology.

However, apart from these discoveries, conveniences and breakthrough in our survival as a species, science has also created new problems such as culture losing and depravity. Among these are pollution problems whereby air pollution is considered the severest. The greenhouse effect originating from increased industrial activity has brought about changes in global climate, imbalance in ecology, diseases, forest fires, all of which are disasters to human life. Toxic gases from industrial manufacture have directly harmed health of human, animals and other creatures on earth.

Many factories releasing untreated waste water into rivers and seas have resulted in perilous water pollution. Noxious chemicals from product manufacture and product consumption are also discharged into soil. Because of such poisons, plants are unable to grow or carry toxicants with them. When people and animals eat these plants, they are likely to be infected, even be killed.

With the current problems now facing the new world due to the new capacities of achievements, we now ask the question, Has Science has done more harm than good for the progress and development of mankind?"

Can you imagine a world without electricity, television, telephones, cars, planes, boats, buses, household appliances, processed food, medicine, computers and internet access? All of these could not have been possible without the intervention of science to improve our standards of living.

On a second note, can you imagine a world without guns, bombs, ammunitions, war crafts, nuclear waste, industrial gasses and pollution? All of these could not have been possible also without the intervention of science.

In terms of Medical Science, this had brought many benefits to mankind as we can expect to live longer than it was ever possible. Diseases like tuberculosis, polio, leprosy and other once dreaded diseases are largely curable now and many potent new drugs have been developed to combat the many diseases that man is suffer from. There are some diseases that are still very hard to treat, but there are more options available to the sufferers. Heart and other organ transplants are common so the chances of surviving a disease have increased. However, in prolonging the lives of men and women, there are many unexpected problems that can surface.

With the reduction of the overall death rate, the population of the world will rise quickly to cause serious implications. Problems will arise in providing adequate housing and food for the rapidly ageing population and the natural demands on the Earth will increase many folds. Our resources will be diminished and the future generation will be hardpressed to cope with the galloping world population. As medicine allows people to live longer, the world will require more of everything to ensure survival. Modern science and medicine has enabled more men and women to live longer which has the effect of increasing the world population and especially the number of older members of the human race. The apparent benefits that we have also bring along their unwanted problems. The creation of guns and ammunition was conceptualized as a way of defending ourselves against violent attacks on the human race however; this has also initiated attacks on each other in the fight for power. Nuclear technology was developed as a source of power to feed our ever-growing needs as the world population increases however, it is now used as a weapon that can destroy the world.

After analysis of all of the pros and cons of Science and technology, I still believe that all the developments made were done with good intentions and many new creations to come will be done with the same good concept to help us develop.

My opinion is that science itself cause neither good nor harm, but more good would come if more people take the initiative to learn and understand science and if it is abused it can cause great harm like atomic bombs, chemical warfare war planes boats, environmental damage, etc

Science is most dangerous is when it falls into the hands of people who want to exploit it without understanding it, especially politicians and religious leaders. Some people understand the basics of science, if not all the details, and they understand that science is value-free. Something either works or it doesn't. How it is put to work is dependent on the values and judgment of the user and a deeper understanding of science often go hand in hand with a deeper understanding of the greater good. Some people who are more interested in power than truth view science as a mysterious tool that they can employ without understanding.

Understanding science requires education. Education chases out superstition and leads to more informed decisions. Science itself causes neither good nor harm, but much good would come from more people learning about and understanding more about science, its benefits and implications if used wrongly.
