The General Election is less than six months away enough time to become informed on some of the issues facing the education sector. Quality Public Education (QPE) Quality Public Education advocates use a right to education framework adopted by the New Zealand Human Rights Commission from the United Nations Economic and Social Council (1999) to assess the realisation of the right to education. The framework comprises four principles:

Nga mihi nui ki a koutou katoa te whanau whanui o te Kura Tuatahi o Whakatu greetings to friends and family of Nelson Central School. Matariki This year has been disappointing in that it was difficult to view the constellation because of the cloud cover we experienced during June. However, that didnt stop everyone in the school from celebrating the Maori New Year. Our celebrations culminated in a stick game exhibition at assembly along with a display of kites made by Totara students. The latter will be put on display in the library early next week. Science Fair While we have been celebrating Matariki children have also been working on Science Fair exhibits. Families will have a chance to view these on Thursday 7th July see other notices elsewhere in this newsletter.

communities educational aspirations, including cultural, language, pedagogical and spiritual dimensions. School and early childhood services would be required to give families a voice, so that they operate in a true partnership. Adaptability it is important that education providers respond and adapt to the childs best interests. To provide quality for all children, early childhood ratios must be enhanced. Ratios of teachers to children are a major concern of all teachers in the system. School and early childhood services in a community must have a professional and collegial relationship with other services and with local schools, to ensure smooth transitions and to benefit from shared best practice. School and early childhood services must be able to retain their own diverse character, and be responsive to their communities needs, while working in harmony within the school system. School and early childhood services should continue to develop in accordance with a national strategic plan and curriculum. A quality public education system should be part of a unified public education service with the following features: Teachers, support staff and property to be centrally funded and administered in a manner consistent with the school sector One national employment agreement for teachers across the public education sector High teacher-to-child ratios Support staff who are well remunerated and supported A continued emphasis on professional learning opportunities All teachers qualified, eventually to a minimum of a bachelor degree level, with higher qualifications encouraged. N elson Primary Schools Cross Country Championshi ps A team of 25 runners were selected to represent the school in the annual Nelson Primary Schools Cross Country Championships at Saxton Field last week. There were 355 runners from 24 primary schools from all over Nelson, Motueka area and Murchison. They competed over a 2 km course which proved challenging after the considerable rain over the previous weeks. The course was extremely muddy with great pools of water to the delight of many. Managing to stay upright was a challenge and there was not a clean runner in sight. All our runners gave their best and showed great sportsmanship. Congratulations team. Special mention must go to Sam Mead who was placed 3rd in the year 6 boys race and was selected to represent Nelson in the Inter-Regional Cross Country Championships to be held in Blenheim in September. Congratulations also to the year 6 boys team (Sam Mead, Thomas Zohrab, Albie Murray, Leo Dickson) who were placed 3rd overall in the y ear 6 boys teams race. Well done boys. Many thanks to all the parents/caregivers who transported the team to and from the event and supported the team during the event. We appreciate your assistance.
