Owner Josh Sundberg says that ideas for the shop were qrtite open;ended in the beginning, but now the concepfs are working beautifully. When asked if they buy items specifically to fif a certain "Minneapolisstyle,"the answer was a bold "No." "We fhink of Minneapolis in a sense, but we also think, fuck you," Sundberg says. "The people we wanf to sell to are independent and open-minded, people who pay attention fo trend5 but don't necessarilyfollow them. Fashion is a revolving door, and we appeal to people who experiment with their style." The other big push for Minneapolis fashion hit when Voltage: Fashion Amplified married the city's siellar musit scene wifh fhe runway. L.A. style is obnoxious and loud. New York is black and sophisticated. Geographically,Minneapolis is in the middle, but where do we fall in the fashion spectrum? The answer depends entirely on whom you ask. An upfown hipster will say our city is sfocked with cool vintage hubs, while most suburbanites will probably gush about the Mall of America, and rural inhabitants wilJ scoff af the question. But the truth is that, in the Twin Cities at least, Minnesofans have begun sewing together a genuine fashion scene with loads of invigorating ideas. In only a few years, fashion in Minneapolis has gone from an overly artsy,.DlY scene to a fully dressed community of glam boutiques, motivafed designers, and fashion-fgrward events for people of all ages and tasfes.

and fall. Small, quality-driven boufiques like Karma, lvy, Design Collective,and VS Social Standard, among many others, are attracting customers who want to shop outsideof the mall walls. So why is fhis fashionrenaissance happening in our city now, recession a n d a l l ? l t ' s a n a l i g n i n g o f s e v e r a lc r u c i a l elemenfs: a baich of moiivated designers and photographers, diverse and highly p u b l i c i z e dl o c a l b o u t i q u e s ,f a s h i o n schools wifh updafed curriculums (who won't advise fheir students to move to the coasts),pnd most important, the p u b l i c ' sd e s i r e . "The key to making local fashion susfainable isn't the fact ihat it's local. It has to be something people want," Sundberg says. "They jusi need to.want ii." The mixing of this fresh community with public demand presenfs opportunities that simply weren't here five years ago, says Voltage creaior Anna Lee. "lt takes an entire spectrum of people coming together to make an indusfry," she says. "The stars have aligned now, yes, but it was very sirategic. People have been working their tails off." A s a r e s u l t ,M i n n e a p o l i si s d e v e l o p i n ga competitive edge on the national scene. With lots of local support, the future lies in convincing the rest of the country. "A lot of local designers wanf to work in M i n n e a p o l i sa n d d e s i g n f o r M i n n e a p o l i s , but we need to be able to markei our people outside [the city]. lt's not a big enough iommunity to suppori everyone...yet," Sundberg says. So in this issue, Cify Pages decided to give ihis budding group a little nudge. lf's summer, after all, and what befter fime fo show off style? This year's Summer Guide becomes the Summer Style lssue, spotlighfing five local designersand one stylist on the rise: Laura Fulk, Mackenzie Labine for Oiishimomo, Kimberly Jurek for Kjurek Couture, Amanda Christine from Amanda Christine Designs,lvan ldland, and stylist Sheila Anderson.
