Claudius Ptolemaeuss map in 150 His map allowed people to imagine that it was possible to sail to Indi via Atlantic Ocean. Because of this, Christopher Columbus found the New World. And the world started to change dramatically: obtaining new colonies. He used the way of latitude and longitude: using 8000 spots to draw this map and the accuracy was proved because of sailing tools in 16 and 17C. Therefore, this map should be very important in human history. Just for information, this is a map which was used around 1490, and the biggest difference is the size of Africa. Because before Copernicus stated this theory, human believed geocentricism-(Earth doesnt move, but sun and moon and stars move around the earth.) Even if people didnt believe Copernicuss theory at first, but this is turned to be truth at last, and this is world-changed theory.

Title: Burning Monk The Self-Immolation (1963) Photographer: Malcolm Browne

On June 11, 1963, Thich Quang Duc, a Buddhist monk from the Linh -Mu Pagoda in Hue, Vietnam, burned himself to death at a busy intersection in downtown Saigon, Vietnam. Thich Quang Duc had prepared himself for his self-immolation through several weeks of meditation and had explained his motivation in letters to members of his Buddhist community as well as to the government of South Vietnam in the weeks pr to his self-immolation. ior In these letters he described his desire to bring attention to the repressive policies of the Catholic Diem regime that controlled the South Vietnamese government at the time. Prior to the self immolation, the South Vietnamese Buddhists had made the following requests to the Diem regime, asking it to: Lift its ban on flying the traditional Buddhist flag; Grant Buddhism the same rights as Catholicism; Stop detaining Buddhists; Give Buddhist monks and nuns the right to practice and spread their religion; and Pay fair compensations to the victim's families and punish those responsible for their deaths. While Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation has received little attention from religious scholars, it has been interpreted from both a re igious and political l perspective. This famous picture was on President Kennedy's desk that day. As a result, Thich Quang Duc's self-immolation: Accelerated the spread of "engaged Buddhism" that had begun in Vietnam in the 1930's and , led to the overthrow of the Diem regime in South Vietnam in November of 1963.

My picture is a mushroom cloud. This pictures incident happened on August 9 th 1945 during WW . American army threw an atomic bomb that is called Fat Man from a jet B-29. The bomb killed over half of the population of Nagasaki city. Also, about 36% buildings in that city totally destroyed by the bomb. After the incident, the prime minister of Japan expressed unconditional surrender to America. Then, Japan ends the war. Now, we have three nonnuclear principles because of the sad big incident. It make our peaceful life.

Hiroshima after dropped an atomic bomb This picture is the Hiroshima city three weeks after dropped an atomic bomb. The U.S. dropped an atomic bomb on the Hiroshima city on August 6, 1945. It was the first time to use an atomic bomb on the battlefield. An atomic bomb has more destructive power than any conventional explosive. It had taken about 140,000 lives.

These two tragedy is one of reason Japan end WW , so I think these pictures changed the warld.

Martin Luther King, Jr.

Mami Fukui

This is Martin Luther King, Jr. He was an American clergyman, activist and prominent leader in the African-American Civil rights Movement. He is best known for being an iconic figure in the advancement of civil rights in the United States and around the world using nonviolent methods following the teachings of Mahatma Gandhi. King is often presented as a heroic leader in the history of modern American liberalism. He is famous for I Have a Dream speech. (1963, March on Washington) There, he expanded American values to include the vision of a color blind society, and established his reputation as one of the greatest orators in American history. There are many Civil Rights Movements around the world. Some of them used weapons or arms. It is too dangerous. However, Kings activities were very peaceful and nonviolent. His activities, especially his speech, encouraged many people who were discriminate by other races and act Civil Rights Movements. That is why I choose this picture. He became a light of hope for a colored race and changed the world. I learned Racism and Civil Rights Movement in another class and I knew some unreasonable murder of black people and managements by police violently. A teacher taught her students about the news and Civil Rights Movements. Then, the students took the lead in researching it and acting some ways, for example, making a speech, writing a letter and sharing their activity in their class. It is important for abolishing racial discrimination to share the information and try to do what you can do. Moreover, I think we need a leader like King now and if all people do what you can do, the world might become more confortable for all races.

This is a picture ofAbraham Lincoln inLincoln Memorial. He was a 16th president in America. He was first president of Republican Party. He is famous for a father of ending slavery. He was against system of slavery. He got the most powerful authority during the Civil War. He declared ending slavery by his power and led to the victory of the war. He is also famous for a speech in Gettysburg. He said government of the people, by the people for the people. This is the most famous phrase in his speech. It is known by all over the world as the essence of democracy. I think that it was a very important event to protect people who are suffered from slavery. He saved many people and created the idea of democracy. It effects our life now and everyone learn and know about him. Then he was one of people who changed the world.

These two pictures were taken in Hiroshima in 1945. On the 6th of August in 1945, during the World War , atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima by the American army. Americans intend Japanese to

lose their fight by dropping atomic bombs which were the latest weapons at that time. Because of them, almost all the buildings in Hiroshima were burned and lost. In addition, atomic bombs killed about one hundred forty thousand people. The left picture was taken from the sky. The right one was taken from the ground. From these pictures, we can know how dangerous atomic bombs are and how dreadful wars are. I chose these pictures because we should think about peace again. It will be 66 years since the World War ended soon, so it is a good chance to notice the importance of peace. I have been to Hiroshima for a

school trip when I was a junior high school student. I visited the Atomic Bomb Dome then and looked at the models of the cities in Hiroshima both before atomic bombs were dropped and after they were thrown down. I really felt the cruelty of wars when I saw them. In conclusion, these pictures changed the world because they showed people terror of wars. In addition, they give us strong will that we will never make war again. < 227 words >

The photo tells us three things. First, the photo shows us the scary moment. In the moment, the bomb was fallen, many people died and the two cities was disappeared. Second, the photo shows us an innovation of human beings without good and bad. Third, the photo tells us the end of World War. After 9 days of falling bombs, the war was finished. To sum up, the photo tells us changing of the world in scary, innovation, and the end of the war. There are two reasons that I chose this photo. First, my grandfather was a victim of an atomic bomb in Hiroshima, so I am interested in atomic bombs. Also, it is my second reason, I am interested in how atomic bombs gave effects in the world.

Naho Imai 1180090105 Writing Friday June 29, 2011 Photos that Changed the World I chose a photo of the March eleventh earthquake in Japan. When the earthquake happened, I was in Canada. I knew the earthquake on TV. I was so surprised, because a lot of buildings collapsed and a lot of cars and houses were streamed to the center of city. I saw a lot of pictures about the earthquake after I went back to Japan. I could not believe whether the disaster happened in real world or not. I was also shocked at the earthquake and felt sad. Then, I thought what I can do for the earthquake victims. In actual, I donated money to the Red Cross, and tried to save on electricity. Now, I think that I want to participate in volunteer and send relief to the earthquake victims.I think that there are people like I do. In fact, message of yelling and fund-raising gathered from not only Japan but also around the world. By the March eleventh disaster, Fukushima No.1 nuclear plant was damaged. People who live in Fukushima gave a lot of difficulties by damage of Fukushima nuclear plant. Then, it made an opportunity to think again about a power of nuclear power and reviewed it around the world. In conclusion, I think the pictures and videos of the March eleventh earthquake have impact on people lifestyles and feelings. Then, I also think that these photos have been changed the world.

IMAGINE / JOHN LENNON

Imagine is a song written and performed by John Lennon, which is included in his album Imagine, and released in 1971. The picture above is jacket picture of the album. This song appeals for world peace for all over the world. Ono Yoko who is John Lennons second wife said that the lyrical content of "Imagine" was "just what John believedthat we are all one country, one world, one people. He wanted to get that idea out in Rolling Stone in 2009. This song have a strongly effect on the world in many ways for supporting people, being against politics, and helping poor countries. Firstly, Imagine has been helping people physically for a long time. James Carter, the 39th President of the U.S, said I and my wife had been listening to Imagine that was used almost same as their national anthems in about 125 countries where we visited in Carter helps monitor Nicaragua presidential election in 2006. In the U.S in 2001, the September 11attacks was happened and about 3,000 people were killed. After the terrorism a lot of people requested radio and TV programs to play Imagine. The song can be someones emotional support. Secondly, Imagine helps people to protest against their government or the politics. It was sung to call for the peace in opening ceremonies of Games of the XXIII Olympiad in 1984 in the U.S. and XX Olympic Winter in 2006 in Italy. The United Nation sent Imagine to 170 countries to pray peace in 1990. When Blair the former Prime Minister of the U.K. was interviewed about justification for Iraq War on TV, A red bus which displayed lyrics of Imagine passed outside of the window while playing the song. The video was broadcasted all over the world. This song is known as one of worldwide antiwar songs, and it is sung by a lot of people who try to stop wars or conflicts. The governments sometimes prohibit this song to play on TV or radio because of the situation like the U.S. has forbidden Imagine during Vietnam War and Iraq War. Thirdly, Imagine aids the poor counties. There are many charity activities using Imagine. Especially, Ono Yoko held many charity concerts and campaigns. She has been holding Dream Power charity concert every year since 2001 to built schools for children. She also cooperated with Hard Rock Caf to charity Imagine Theres No Hunger. It was held in all the cafs over the world to contribute World Hunger Year which aims to crusade hunger and poverty. Imagine has effects as not a antiwar song but a helpful word to save people. Overall, the song Imagine has a great influence on the World Peace. Imagine can be a support to live by listening to the song, counter the government to oppose the war by singing the song, and help poor people by using the word. I am in a toy camera circle and we joined Design Festival in Tokyo last year. We

used this song to exhibit our photo exhibition that appealed World Peace. I could see how many people were interested in and affected by Imagine during the exhibition. Japanese, American, Italian, British, and other many people stopped in front of our booth to see the Love and Peace photo exhibition. I was very impressed how the song affected all over the world and changed their feelings at the time. The experience made me choose this song for an image that changes the world. Lyrics Imagine there's no Heaven It's easy if you try No hell below us Above us only sky Imagine all the people Living for today Imagine there's no countries It isn't hard to do Nothing to kill or die for And no religion too Imagine all the people Living life in peace You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will be as one Imagine no possessions http://www.japansociety.org.uk/earthquake-2/?lang =ja I wonder if you can No need for greed or hunger A brotherhood of man Imagine all the people Sharing all the world You may say I'm a dreamer But I'm not the only one I hope someday you'll join us And the world will live as one

A picture that change the world

The picture below is one of the fearful pictures that change the world. This is called a mushroom cloud. It is caused by the explosion of atomic bomb, so it became the symbol of the atomic bomb in the world. In Japan atomic bomb destroyed Hiroshima and Nagasaki and put a lot of terror into Japanese, so it became a kind of stopper of war, not to repeat our mistake to use it.

This is a famous picture that a polar bear is on a small glacier. By showing this picture to public, it made people think how much the global warming is a sever problem. I chose this picture beccause it was shocking for me that global warming is destroying not only the ozone layer but also the ecosystem, and it made me think much more seriously than before.
