Uncovering Rizal through his artworks at the Ateneo Art Gallery

(philstar.com) Updated July 02, 2011 10:47 AM Comments (0)

,MANILA, Philippines - How well do you know Jose Rizal? The Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU) has put up an exhibit of the works of Rizal that may help Filipinos know their national hero even better. Dubbed Rizal in the Ateneo/The Ateneo in Rizalthe exhibit features Rizal artifacts that will remind 21st century Filipinos of the 19th century Rizal in Ateneo, and the effect this Ateneo education had on his life and work. The exhibit, which runs from Mune 17 to December 2011 at the Ateneo Art Gallery, was put up by noted historian Ambeth Ocampo in commemoration of Rizal s 150th birthday. Curator The exhibit includes an alcohol burner that contained a folded piece of paper, which was discreetly handed by Rizal to his sister Trinidad.

The paper contains the handwritten, unsigned and untitled poem of Rizal, which was later known in history as the Mi Ultimo Adios (My Last Farewell). "That poem is one of many writings which demonstrate his love for freedom," ADMU said. Another piece of art and history included in the exhibit is a book that Rizal republished that showed that the Philippines is already an advanced civilization even before the Spaniards came. The book was meant to belie the "Sucesos de las Islas Filipinas" written by Spaniard Antonio de Morte. Aside from writing, Rizal is also a talented artist, as shown by the statuette of the Sacred Heart which he carved during his student days in 1875 in the Ateneo. Made from batikuling wood, the statuette stayed in the Ateneo until December 1896 when the Jesuit fathers visited Rizal in Fort Santiago. There, the statuette kept Rizal company until he was led to his execution. It is said that before leaving his cell on December 30, he gave the statuette one last kiss. He handed the statuette to the Jesuits who accompanied him on his last day. The statuette is also in the exhibit. An alcohol burner, a book and a statuette. These are some of the things that Filipinos will remember Jose izal by. And these are some of the memorabilia that are on display at the Ateneo Art Gallery in an exhibit that aims to remind Filipinos of this outstanding hero.
