A SILVER LINING
Japans economy contracted more than
economists estimated in the first quarter,
underscoring the damage the March 11
earthquake and tsunami inflicted on capital
spending and factory production.
Gross domestic product shrank at an
annualised 3.5 per cent rate in the three
months ended March 31, according to the
Cabinet Office in Tokyo, compared with
the three per cent median that was widely
expected. The government initially estimated
a contraction of 3.7 per cent.
Toyota Motor Corp. and Nissan
Motor Co., which posted sales declines
in May, are working to restore operations
after the disaster caused a shortage of
parts and power, pushing the economy into
a recession.
However, there is good news as
well. Bank of Japan Governor Masaaki
Shirakawa said on June 1 that supply
constraints are easing faster than
expected as companies rush to repair
their facilities and economists predict the
economy will expand in the second half of
the year as reconstruction work kicks in.
Toyota predicted that its domestic output
will recover to 90 per cent of normal levels
in June.

veteran. Joseph P Clayton, a
former Sirius Satellite Radio
Chairman and Chief Executive, is
the new CEO at DISH Network
Corp the US second largest
satellite TV broadcaster. Clayton,
61, took office on June 2 and
brings with him all the experience
gained over three decades in
senior positions in the satellite and
consumer electronics industries.
Charles Ergen, the outgoing
CEO and founder of DISH
Network Corp, will continue as the
companys chairman. Clayton has
had a long working relationship
with the outgoing CEO over the
past 20 years, which will stand
him in good stead as he faces the
new challenges. In recent years

World economic and agricultural leaders have projected the
worlds population will surpass nine billion by 2050,
and 10 billion by the turn of the century.
And they have forecast that global food
production must jump 70 per cent or
