The trouble with a merger like this is that our people who know computers dont know thing about bubble gum, people who know about bubble gum dont know things about hats, the people who know hats

Economics Meaning

Economics is about the production, distribution and consumption of goods.

What goods to produce.

The economic concept of specialization helps answer this question. Under specialization, economic actors concentrate their skills on tasks at which they are the most skilled.

Economics Meaning(Cont.)

Specialization has both micro- and macroeconomic applications. Everyone is not able to do everything by himself or herself All are dependent on other people who are specialized or say super specialized in their work. So one need to outsource our work to them.

Super-specialization and Outsourcing

The term "outsourcing" has come to primarily refer to the outsourcing of American jobs to foreigners.

Outsourcing doesn't only apply to business - it applies to people as well. In fact, we all outsource in our everyday life.

Super-specialization and Outsourcing(Cont.)

For example When you buy a mobile, you're outsourcing its manufacture to an mobile manufacturing company because you don't have the ability to build it yourself.

Super-specialization and Outsourcing(Cont.)

Businesses use outsourcing as well, with the purpose of improving their ability to stay in business and compete. And they do so to all super-specialized business units.

Case: NIKE

They dont make any thing and just assemble all their product at one place. They outsource their all work to specialized workers in southern Asia. That is a perfect example of outsourcing and super-specialization.

Case: NIKE(Cont.)

These thing i.e. outsourcing and superspecialization looks like always positive and supporting. But as we all know there is always 2nd side of every coin. And that is also the same in this case.

Case: NIKE(Cont.)

Nike has faced many issues due to their outsourcing to the super-specialized. Nike was bombarded with many allegations of un-ethical child labor, forced overtime and paying below poverty level wages.

Which much of the judicial systems placed in these countries have no system enforced for such employment rights

Rigidness

Super-specialization makes the organization less flexible. We can say organization becomes rigid.

Case Xerox

Xerox famous for its copying machine is the best example of super-specialized brand which failed due to their rigidness.

Bored employees

Working same work everyday makes you bore. And that is also an evil of being superspecialized. For ex. a person, being a software engineer, super-specialized in website making will get bored making only websites for years.

Behind the changing world

World is changing everyday. And being same for years will not help any business to be at the same place in the market.

Case - Kodak

Oldest brand since 1890. The brand is about to end. This is so because they just stick to their super-specialized products but didnt change with the world and peoples demand

Case Kodak(cont.)
They

didnt launched or delayed digital camera for 7 years after Sony lunching the first digital camera.

That

cost them a lot and now they are losing their market share and is about to vanish from the market.

Overdependence on Specialized people/organization

It create dependence on key people. So if that specialized knowledge employee is not available than the work will not go on. Same can be the case for the organization.

Overdependence on Specialized people/organization(cont.)

Dependence

on super-specialized company can make you suffer a lot in the case of unavailability of those products or the company.

Case Hear Say band
