systemic changes needed to save our coral reefs

eaningful change occurs, and has lasting effect, when it ensues from the ground up. When there is a groundswell of support from the very grassroots of society, effective change takes place. The problems facing the waters of Davao gulf need this kind of change to take place soon. The major industry of the island garden City of Samal is tourism, what with all the white-sand beaches, diverse dive spots, even hiking trails and caves. The citys coastlines are now dotted with beach resorts, from the high-end ones to the for-backpackers type of weekend getaway. More properties are expected to be put up in the coming years. Supply < Demand in contrast, sizable communities of fisherfolk make their living on Samal. The more enterprising ones sell their daily catch to Samal and Davao merchants, but i believe the majority of them are subsistence fishermen. Samal fishermen and their families rely on the seas bounty to survive. The sea, however, is no longer a limitless supply of sustenance, owing to high population growth and the alarming rate of destruction of coral reefs in many parts of the country. How does one go about telling the gulfs fishermen to conserve marine resources when theyre practically hungry? and yet, they are very much part of the difficulties in realizing sustainable marine conservation. lets take, for example, the case of the crown-of-thorns starfish infestation in Samal some years back. The unrestrained propagation of this destructive starfish (a group of which can consume an entire coral colony in just hours) was attributed to the overfishing of its natural predator, the Triton snail. Tritons are a delicacy, and fishermen who hawk such a prized catch to beach-goers will certainly earn enough to get by and then some. Today, Triton sightings are rare in Samal. Destructive Practices Most conceivably due to their lack of knowledge regarding marine life, fishermen are wont to dispose of their old fishing nets into the sea. These are called ghost nets and they tend to blanket entire coral colonies. aside from being a gruesome eyesore in the otherwise remarkable seascape, ghost nets seriously harm coral. and, it can cause dolphins, sea turtles and

sharks to get ensnared and thus cause them to drown. another potentially destructive practice among fisherfolk is the use of makeshift baskets that have one-way openings, used for catching fish and crab. locally called bobo, these underwater traps are heaved onto the sea floor and then retrieved later on. While this isnt exactly an undesirable means of fishing, fishermen indiscriminately throw these cages into the sea without regard for potential damage to coral underneath. When being anchored is a bad thing Diving recently at the Coral gardens dive site, located off the coast of Talikud island, i was saddened by the sight of scarred coral heads in this underwater haven. i also saw an overturned brain coral, uprooted clean to the core nothing else could have caused this atrocity but a boats anchor. Most banca operators throw anchor when they go to dive sites or beaches. its a destructive practice that some conscientious Dabawenyos try to remedy by installing buoys around Talikud island. Sadly, most of the buoys have long been stolen, presumably by locals. a hundred meters or so into deeper sea from the Coral gardens, there remains one buoy thats meant for banca to latch on to. They dont use it, however, because its too far, according to a boatman i talked to one day. That same day, i witnessed an atrocity i couldnt stomach when i went diving with a group of three Koreans. On our first dive, i saw them poking at different kinds of coral with a stick. Why they were doing that escapes me. i let them be, as i was trying to take in the awe-inspiring underwater sights. But on our second dive, at the Dapia Wall (also near Talikud island), what one of the Korean divers did drove me to action. i noticed two of them had brought down food containers, and i caught one of them trying to catch tropical fish. again, why? What fish they catch would, in all probability, only die sometime after surfacing. Theres more. a current was coursing through the reef, so this Korean diver anchored himself by stepping on a table coral. and his other fin, he jammed into a crevice formed by the wall and a sea fan. fearing for the delicate coral (growth rate: less than 5cm per year), i approached

him and wagged my finger in front of his mask, and when he backed off i pointed to the coral hed almost ruined. He wasnt all too happy with me. Truth be told, id be happier if he and his companions never returned to Davao. Their behavior was utterly disrespectful of nature and of our countrys resources. i told the dive master about the incident, but only to let him know, not to urge him to act. not yet. i have this sinking feeling that dive operators in Davao City might hesitate to enforce environmental protection measures for fear of losing business. Very short-term thinking, i know. This observation is based on the fact that no dive shop in the city displays any information regarding

marine conservation in their premises. Sanitary napkins and diapers earlier, edge Davao also ran a story about discarded sanitary napkins and diapers litter the ocean bed and coastal areas of Davao gulf and are causing the widespread bleaching of coral vital to the life of marine life. This is particularly true in areas near the island garden City of Samal, according to Dr. fred Medina, head of the Davao coral divers group. Medinas group participates in the scubasureros

coastal cleanup drive regularly conducted by thousands of residents and government employees in the waters and communities around the Davao gulf. Medina, a physician, said divers and other organizers of the cleanup have never been able to trace the source of the bags of napkins and diapers. ang mga diapers and sanitary napkins nakita namin ay sako-sako, he said, adding i will not say na women ang nagtatapon nito. Kasi organized na pagtatapon eh, binalot sa sako, kasi up to the neck of the sack.

We dont know kung galing ito sa isang resort, galing sa isang barko, o galing ano... you know, but its there. We found them. Tingnan muna naming sa loob, baka sasabog ang laman. ang baho naman talaga nito. Hindi mo maamoy pero makita mo yung lumalabas. So we dont know where its coming from. But, oh yah, we dont know kung tinapon ito sa barko, maliit na boat, sa isang resort, o sa isang bahay. So, but meron kaming nakita na maraming diapers nakakalat anywhere. Sometimes more often than not, ang iba, doon naming nakikita sa magaganda nating mga corals. nakabara ng ganun. So, we have to get that out. Sometimes, naka entangle na. in the process, if you are not too careful, sometimes ang coral napupunit. Media practitioners, who heard Dr. Medina in a media forum, speculated that the garbage must have come from either hospitals or inter-island passenger ships. Next Steps When we now have less than 5% of Philippine coral reefs intact, a concerted effort to conserve what we have left must be initiated and sustained. fisherfolk need to be educated and made aware of their responsibility to the sea; dive masters and guides need to be deputized somehow; tourists diving the waters of the gulf need to be clearly and firmly informed of conservation policies; the local governments serving in the gulf need to learn from other areas where marine conservation programs are succeeding, and implement a holistic approach for the protection of Davao gulf. it must be a community endeavor, with everyone doing his part, not because he was told to do so but because he appreciates exactly why it must be done.

Keeping healthy together

C
by kenshin Yuri
OuPle Christopher and Rosanna Tiu personifies the adage -- a couple that is healthy is happy together. for 15 years of their marriage they never faced problems they couldnt handle. That is, until illness came into their lives. like other couples, good health matters to the Tius to sustain their marriage and family. it is common knowledge that illness affects marriage and family. apart from both have to deal with the emotional baggage, caregiving to the other half who is sick all of the time is a huge responsibility and can be a huge burden. also having a parent who has a serious illness also greatly affects the children since they usually have higher levels of emotional distress, somatic concerns, behavioral problems and lower self-esteem when compared with children who have physically healthy parents. Susans misery started in april 2009 when she started to feel pain in her sides. She took antibiotics every time the pain occurred. The medicine stopped the pain for awhile, but it eventually kept recurring. Suspecting that the symptoms pointed to urinary tract infection (uTi), she went to a doctor for checkup. She underwent a laboratory test which showed no definitive result. So, she was advised to undergo an ultrasound procedure. That was when an ovarian cyst was discovered, measuring four centimeters. The cyst caused Rosanna to easily feel fatigue, loss of energy and strength and insomnia. She and her husband feared the worst; that the cyst would lead to cancer. in fact, the doctor told her that if it would grow two centimeters more, she would have to undergo operation. She was also con-

fused because the doctor did not prescribe any medicine for the cyst, although she was allowed to go herbal. it was during those times, when Susan and Chris had lost all hope that the cyst would ever be cured, that they came across a television commercial on the wonders of MX3 capsules as the most successful food supplement ever. That gave them a ray of hope that maybe, just maybe, here was the answer to their prayer. She then bought one (1) box of Mx3 Capsules and tried taking 2 Mx3 Capsules a day for fifteen (15) consecutive days. after 15 days of taking the capsule, she went back to her doctor for another ultrasound ses-

sion. This time her doctor was pleasantly surprised when the test showed that her cyst was completely gone. i sleep well now, Susan said. Meanwhile, her husband began taking MX3 capsule upon Susans prodding. Chris had been suffering from hemmorhoids (almoranas) for 15 years, an ailment which dated back when he was still a bachelor. He said he had acquired it genetically, and that it had worsened because he did nothing about it. There were traces of blood every time i discharged, he explained. Such illness did not only bring him discomfort but made his life miserable as well as it caused him much stress, insecurity, loss of energy and sleepless nights. He tried finding solution and remedy to said problem but to no avail. Consequently, he was already resigned to his fate that he would carry that sickness for life. His luck came about through his wifes quest for cure of her illness.

after taking MX3 capsules for 15 days, his discharge had no more traces of blood. not only that his Hemorrhoid disappeared, regained his strength and vigor and could now sleep soundly. Chris said he only followed his wifes advice to take the capsules, unaware at the time that MX3 would cure his hemorrhoid without side effects. Today he feels much, much better, thanks to the capsules that he takes daily. The Tiu couple regularly takes MX3 capsules for maintenance, especially since both are busy managing their business. Based on their experience with the product, some of their regular customers are now into the MX3 capsule habit themselves, with wonderful results to their health. We are not being paid for this testimony. My proof that MX3 healed me is my latest ultrasound result, Susan said.

He Department of agriculture (Da) has earmarked multimillion funds for various livelihoods in Mindanao. The Das Mindanao Rural Development Program (Da-MRDP) has already disbursed a total of P234.96 million for its livelihood arm qhile, another 260.56 million was issued with Certificate of availability of funds (Caf) and are ready for download to beneficiaries making the overall portfolio of CfaD to P495.51 million. Program director lealyn a. Ramos, in her report to Da Secretary Proceso J. alcala, said the Community fund for agricultural Development (CfaD) component spent the amount mostly in food security interventions, community managed livelihoods and small support infrastructure. The various livelihoods have benefitted 49,537 individuals. With the aim to increase agricultural production and increase incomes of small farmers, CfaD component is a municipal-based funding facility though which MRDP provides financing for the diverse needs and priorities expressed by poor communities. The bottom-up approach under the Program where the peoples organization themselves identify and mange the project has promoted participation and transparency in governance and prompted for the empowerment of many rural folks, Ramos said. To date, there are already 1,988 agribased livelihoods funded. 671 were completed, 365 are still on-going and the rest are ready for implementation.

He recent diplomatic squabble between the Philippines and China over ownership of the Spratly group of islands in the South China Sea (West Philippine Sea) has so far not affected the growth of the Philippines Chinese tourism market. Mary ann Montemayor, chairperson of the Davao Regional Tourism Council, said that despite the Spratlys incident the number of Chinese tourists entering the country is till growing at an unprecedented rate. Department of Tourism figures show that tourism arrivals from China grew 18.54% from the period January to april 2011. in the Davao region it ranks number three in the east asian market next to Japan and South Korea. Tourism is non-political, Montemayor said, adding that tourists wont be swayed by political issues like territorial disputes. Montemayor was with members of the team composed of the Davao Regional Tourism Council, Department of Tourism and other private partners in Beijing during the launch of the Davao Cultural festival: from Highlands to island held last June 11. The festival in the Chinese capital signified the push to promote Davao as an alternative ecotourism, extreme adventure

Chinese tourism market unaffected by Spratly

and culinary destination among the growing Chinese market, particularly to tourists from Beijing. Montemayor during her report at Club 888s media forum at The Marco Polo Davao, said the festival was a huge success. One particular aspect was the culinary festival held at the Marco Polo Parkside Hotel in Beijing where a crack team of filipino chefs lef by gene gonzales whipped out filipino, particularly Dabawenyo, dishes. The cuisine merited media attention as CCTV, the Chinese national television network, devoted an eight-minute feature on the culinary event. Montemayor said that Davao will be the focus of the upcoming Beijing subway billboard campaign where photos featuring famous tourism attractions will be posted in Beijing subways. furthermore, Davao is already considered as a honeymoon and wedding destination for romantic Chinese travelers. Meanwhile, Beijing gets a taste of Davao culture after the private sector, with the support of the Philippine Department of Tourism brings Davao culture to Beijing, China for a showcase of Davao s cuisine. Dubbed as Davao Cultural festival in Beijing started last June 11 and will last until end of the month. This is a venue for Davao to feature its cuisine, culture and crafts before members of the Beijing Media and the travel and trade networks. another aim of the festival is to foster public-private partnership amongst tourism key players in the region in the aim of promoting Davao to the international market. led by gonzales, the rest of the Center for asian Culinary Studies team shared the taste of Davao cuisine along with the known local products like Durian and Pomelo, and the Malagos cheese from Davao s Malagos farm. Some of the dishes to be prepared by the team are Kaldereta de Kabrito, a colonial style braised goat stew with olives; adobo Manuc ating Dilo, braised chicken in spiced vinegar and turmeric. The Davao Cultural festival in Beijing is considered a good venue to inform foreignerns on what Davao Region has to offer from its exotic islands to the challenging highlands. Based from the monthly report of 55 licensed accommodations, China is at the top five foreign markets that visit the city. a total of 13 percent increase was noted from 2010 to 2011.[Pia 11]

million, geniston realized that it was not sufficient to produce odorless VCO. unfazed, this chemical engineer managed to assemble a centrifuge that did away with the unpleasant odor. He recalled how he went to scrap yards to look for parts for the machine which he personally assembled. Soon enough, his company was producing 500 kilos of VCO a day, a far cry from the original 30 kilos daily production of VCO when they started the business in 2005. Today, ag Pacific employs 50 people and produces VCO valued at P9 million annually. Quality control of their products is assured by harvesting their own coconuts at the right maturity stage of the nuts, which he said is a tough job in itself. The good quality of their VCO helps the company survive despite despite their limited number of buyers. Perseverance is the key, he said of their success, adding that his company had almost gone bankcrupt during its birthing stage when it almost folded up. But we continued to strive because we believed we had a very healthy product that would benefit filipinos before foreigners, he said. The company, mindful of the health benefits from VCO, wants to help this segment of the coconut industry because the price of VCO cannot arbitrarily be controlled unlike what uscrupulous traders do to 2009, ag Pacific participated in the international food exhibition 2011 at the SMX Convention Center in Pasay City. That helped propel ag Pacific and its product into the world market where its VCO product has been in high demand in the uS, australia, Taiwan, The Dominican Republic and Hong Kong.

nOWn to fight pathogens that protect the body from diseases, virgin coconut oil (VCO) is made out of fresh coconut meat whose rancid odor assails the nose of those who pass by a coconut oil factory. However, antonino Tony geniston, general manager of ag Pacific neutriceutical Corporation in Butai, Padada, Davao del Sur, discovered the right technology to produce fine VCO without the obnoxious smell. long before genistons discovery which made his product a hit abroad, he had heard over the radio about the health benefits of VCO from host Solita Monsod, a professor from the university of the Philippines Diliman, and popular media personality. geniston, a 50-year old chemical engineer, took Monsods words to heart and conducted his own research on VCO. He found out that VCO has been in high demand in the united States. in 2005, geniston and his business partners embarked on the manufacture of VCO even as they sought a way to eliminate the natural odor of dried coconut meat. in time they stumbled upon the reason for the unwanted smell: the presnece of impurities and moisture in the oil. usually, when a product has a strong smell, it means that there was something wrong in the process, said geniston. However, starting the business on a capital of P2

copra. Bouyed by the quality and popularity of their product, ag Pacific then, took up another challenge by venturing into the international market, mindful of the big demand of VCO in the uS. The Department of Trade and industry (DTi)

Raising butterflies for profit

aTTenDeD recently the wedding of my friends daughter. There was nothing unusual about the program until something caught my attention. it was when the bride got a box full of butterflies and released them into the air. The audience clapped their hands; i was stunned. it was the first time i saw such an entrancing event. Butterflies are like flowers with wings, a worldrenowned Malaysian poet once penned. indeed, theres no better way of celebrating the beginning of a couples married life than with a cloud of these magical creatures? after the wedding, i talked with my friend about it and he told me that they got the butterflies from the Davao Butterfly House. immediately, i called up Philip Sonny Dizon to ask him how much they are selling their butterflies. fifty pesos each, he replied. The Philippines is not the only country where butterflies are sold commercially. Costa Rica, el Salvador, india, Kenya, Madagascar, Taiwan, and Thailand have also embarked on this high-profit business. in the united States, commercial butterfly dealers sell butterflies at P5,000 per dozen. There are now about 350 butterfly breeders throughout the Philippines , according to the laguna-based Philippine Council for agriculture, forestry and natural Resources Research and Development (PCaRRD). This excludes the butterfly gardens, gene banks, and parks set up by government and private entities. Butterflies comprise the true butterflies, skippers, and the moth-butterflies. There are about 24,000 species of butterflies. Some migrate over long distances. Some butterflies have evolved symbiotic and parasitic relationships with social insects such as ants. Butterflies range in size from a tiny 1/8 inch to a huge almost 12 inches. They are not color-blind; they can see red, green, and yellow. Butterflies are important economically as pollinators for some species of plants although in general they do not carry as much pollen load. They are, however, capable of moving pollen over greater distances. Many butterflies, such as the Monarch butterfly, are migratory and capable of long distance flights. They migrate during the day and use the sun to orient themselves. They also perceive polarized light and use it for orientation when the sun is hidden. The top butterfly flight speed is 12 miles per hour. Culturally, butterflies are a popular motif in the visual and literary arts. in some parts of the world, a butterfly signifies an omen. Some people say that when a butterfly lands on you it means good luck. in the Philippines, a black butterfly lingering in the house is taken to mean that someone in the family has died or will soon die. The

by Jims Vincent t. Capuno

idiom butterflies in the stomach is used to describe a state of nervousness. Butterflies are notable for their unusual life cycle with a larval caterpillar stage, an inactive pupae stage and a spectacular metamorphosis into a familiar and colorful winged adult form, and most species being day-flying they regu-

larly attract attention. Butterflies feed primarily on nectar from flowers. Some also derive nourishment from pollen, tree sap, rotting fruit, decaying flesh, and dissolved minerals in wet sand or dirt. as adults, butterflies consume only liquids. They feed on nectar from flowers and also sip water from damp patches. This they do for water, for energy from sugars in nectar and for sodium and other minerals which are vital for their reproduction. Several species of butterflies need more sodium than provided by nectar. They are attracted to sodium in salt and they sometimes land on people, attracted by human sweat. another interesting fact about butterflies is that they sense the air for scents, wind and nectar using their antennae. The antennae come in various shapes and colors. The hesperids have a pointed angle or hook to the antennae, while most other families show knobbed antennae. a butterflys sense of taste is coordinated by chemoreceptors on the tarsi, which work only on contact, and are used to determine whether an egglaying insects offspring will be able to feed on a leaf before eggs are laid on it Butterflies are different from moths although some people may think they are the same. Butterflies can be distinguished from moths in several ways: the antennae of butterflies are knobbed at

the tips, while those of moths almost never have terminal knobs and are often feathery; the body of a butterfly is more slender and usually smoother than that of a moth; butterflies are active by day, while most moths are nocturnal; when at rest most butterflies hold the wings vertically, while most moths flatten them against the surface on which they are resting. But there are also things in which butterflies and moths are alike. like moths, butterflies have coiled, sucking mouthparts and two pairs of wings that function as a single pair; the wings are covered with scales that come off as dust when the insects is handled. Butterfly farming is very viable, asserted PCaRRD. actually, butterfly farming is breeding butterflies in captivity. The livelihood focuses on the production of butterfly pupae, the stage between the

larvae and the imago or adult, in which the insect is enclosed in a hardened case. Butterfly farming is simple and can be done in the backyard. Sustainable livelihood Options for the Philippines, published by the Department of environment and natural Resources (DenR), has come up with simple method on butterfly farming. Here it is: Stock collecting and breeding Collect female and male adult butterflies using an insect net. The male butterfly has a narrow pointed abdomen while the female butterfly has a stout and rounded abdomen. adult butterflies are everywhere. The best time to collect them is during summer and when flowers are in bloom. Just a thought: Secure permit to collect adult butterflies for breeding from the DenRs line agency, the Protected areas and Wildlife Bureau, before the collec-

tion. This way, you wont have any legal problem which may arise later on. Keep the pairs of butterflies in an improvised insectarium. it is a net enclosure of 1.5 meters by 2.5 meters by 4 meters with live food plant inside where the butterfly breeders are reared. ensure the cleanliness of the insectarium at all times. in the insectarium, the adult butterfly feeds on fresh flowers. Supplement the food with a mixture of sugar and water placed in a basin. Be sure to change the

water in the bottle (where the food plants are placed) twice a day. Wait until the butterflies lay eggs. laying of eggs may be hours, days or months after mating. The egg is enclosed in a protective shell, more or less spherical and very small. The eggs are deposited on the leaves of the food plants. an adult butterfly lays an average of 70 eggs. However, release from the insectarium the pair of butterfly after laying about 50 eggs to allow the butterfly to lay the remaining eggs in the natural habitat. larvae and pupae development Collect the food plant with the eggs and put in a bottle with water. Place the bottle with the food plant in a hatchery (an enclosed screened cabinet). Put a basin with water at the bottom of the hatchery to prevent the ants from crawling in. Wait for four days when the egg will hatch into larvae and feed on the foliage of the food plant. larvae vary considerably in shape and size depending on the species. larvae vision can detect differences between light and darkness and their tastes are acute. food discrimination is prominent and many larvae will rather starve than eat abnormal food plants. let the larvae develop into pupae after 16 days. like the larvae, pupaes size, shape and color vary with species. Pack 100 pupae in a box cushioned with cotton. Sell these to a middleman with an export permit because there is no local market yet for pupae. Pupae are exported mostly to the australia , Canada , Denmark , germany , Japan , netherlands , Palau , Switzerland , Taiwan , united Kingdom , and united States . adult butterfly can also be raised from the eggs. The pupae are not totally marketed; some are developed into adult butterflies. The adult butterflies can be sold to people who want them for special events like birthdays and weddings. Butterfly farming is considered environment-friendly inasmuch as there is symbiotic relationship between the plants and the butterflies, the DenR publication states. The former provides nectar for the butterfly while the latters activity hastens the pollination of the flowers. There is no significant effect on the photosynthesis process.

THE BUSINESS PAPER EDGEDAVAO

on ageing (Part 1) By Lee Kuan Yew Singapore Minister Mentor

Commentary
Stay interested in the World, Take on a Challenge by Singapore Minister Mentor lee Kuan Yew MY COnCeRn today is (at age 87), what is it i can tell you which can add to your knowledge about ageing and what ageing societies can do. You know more about this subject than i do. a lot of it is out in the media, internet and books. So i thought the best way would be to take a personal standpoint and tell you how i approach this question of ageing. if i cast my mind back, i can see turning points in my physical and mental health. You know, when youre young, i didnt bother, i assumed good health was godgiven and would always be there. When it was about 1957 - i was about 34, we were competing in elections, and i was really fond of drinking beer and smoking. and after the election campaign, in Victoria Memorial Hall we had just won the election, the City Council election - i couldnt thank the voters because i had lost my voice. id been smoking furiously. id take a packet of 10 to deceive myself, but id run through the packet just sitting on the stage, watching the crowd, getting the feeling, the mood before i speak. in other words, there were three speeches a night. Three speeches a night, 30 cigarettes, a lot of beer after that, and the voice was gone. i remember i had a case in Kuching, Sarawak. So i took the flight and i felt awful. i had to make up my mind whether i was going to be an effective campaigner and a lawyer, in which case i cannot destroy my voice, and i cant go on. So i stopped smoking. it was a tremendous deprivation because i was addicted to it. and i used to wake up dreaming...the nightmare was i resumed smoking.. But i made a choice and said, if i continue this, i will not be able to do my job. i didnt know anything about cancer of the throat or oesophagus or the lungs, etc. But it turned out it had many other deleterious effects. Strangely enough after that, i became very allergic, hyper-allergic to smoking, so much so that i would plead with my Cabinet ministers not to smoke in the Cabinet room. if you want to smoke, please go out, because i am allergic. Then one day i was at the home of my colleague, Mr, Rajaratnam, meeting foreign correspondents including some from the london Times and they took a picture of me and i had a big belly, a beer belly. i felt no, no, this will not do. So i started playing more golf, hit hundreds of balls on the practice tee. But this didnt bring down my waist size. There was only one way it could go down: consume less, burn up more. another turning point came when - this was 1976, after the general election - i was feeling tired. i was breathing deeply at the istana, on the lawns. My daughter, who at that time was just graduating as a doctor, said: What are you trying to do? i said: i feel an effort to breathe in more oxygen.. She said: Dont play golf.. Run. aerobics. So she gave me a book, quite a famous book and, then, very current in america on how you score aerobic points swimming, running, whatever including cycling. i looked at it sceptically. i wasnt very keen on running. i was keen on golf. So i said, lets try. So in-between golf shots while playing on my own, sometimes nine holes at the istana, i would try and walk fast between shots.. Then i began to run between shots. and i felt better. after a while, i said: Okay, after my golf, i run. and after a few years, i said: golf takes so long. The running takes 15 minutes. lets cut out the golf and lets run. i think the most important thing in ageing is you got to understand yourself. and the knowledge now is all there. When i was growing up, the knowledge wasnt there.. i had to get the knowledge from friends, from doctors. But perhaps the most important bit of knowledge that the doctor gave me was one day, when i said: look, im feeling slower and sluggish. So he gave me a medical encyclopaedia and he turned the pages to ageing. i read it up and it was illuminating. a lot of it was difficult jargon but i just skimmed through to get the gist of it. as you grow, you reach 20, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 and then, thereafter, you are on a gradual slope down physically. [To be continued]

eaR Ye, HeaR Ye!!! first the good news. The uS government has unveiled a new set of cigarette warnings in the form of graphic images in color that will appear on cigarette packs sold in the united States starting in September 2012 to highlight the health risks of smoking. a lifeless body, a scarred mouth and a blackened lung will be among the graphic images to be shown. each image will occupy 50 percent of the front and rear panels of cigarette packs and the top 20 percent of cigarette advertisements. One-pack-a-day smokers will see the images 7,000 times a year. The two-packers 14,000 times. One of the images shows a man with his chest sewn up. another shows a mouth filled with scattered brown teeth and a lip with an open sore, warning: Cigarettes cause cancer! according to the food and Drug association (fDa), smoking kills 1,200 people a DaY in the united States alone where about 20 percent of the population smokes. Similar graphic warnings can be seen on cigarette packs from Brazil to Britain and beyond. We can only wonder if the uS experience will be replicated in the Philippines where the tobacco lobby in Congress, like the PMfTC (Philip Morris

to shock and awe

fortune Tobacco Corporation) is a formidable force to reckon with by antismoking proponents. it is safe to predict that the expected battle in Congress between the pros and the cons on the issue of graphic images on cigarette packs will be contentious. Should that come to pass, it could be the knock em down, drag em out variety. Be that as it may, the World Health Organization (WHO) is certain to get into the act and trot out statistics designed to shock and awe smokers into quitting the vice. The tobacco industry in this country would not be taking such a development lying down. in fact, over in the uS, the industry has filed a lawsuit challenging the labels, arguing that they put undue restriction on tobacco companies right to free expression by confiscating too much of the packet space. They are not about to surrender just like that to the anti-smoking sector of society. in Davao City, an average of three people die each day from tobacco-related diseases like cancer and chronic bronchitis while another eleven die each day from all sorts of heart diseases caused by smoking. While the good news in the Philippines is the continuing and relentless campaign against smoking, the BaD neWS is that President noy refuses to take the lead. for obvious reasons.

DaVaO City is growing in all aspects in both emerging and traditional industries.

why the k+12 is doomed

HeRe is no doubting the fact that that the quality of the countrys human resources is declining. The country produces more than 1.2 million college graduates a year, yet everyone seems to be in unison in agreeing that the quality of our graduates leaves much to be desired. Meaning, a considerable number of the graduates can hardly compete to survive in the real world. naturally, the obvious sector that takes the brunt is the countrys education system. Worse, the public education system is being blamed because of its seeming inability to raise their quality compared to the private sector, a very depressing development which should not have happened. The private education system has also its own lapses and is equally blamed for the dismal performance of many of their graduates. We should understand that until now, most of us cannot seem to agree what we really mean by quality education. everyone simply wants to see graduates who are already equipped to be on their own. Thus, their apparent weaknesses are blamed squarely on the education system, which is not absolutely correct. even the K+12 strategy is certainly facing the impossible task of reversing the trend unless the main cause of the failure of the education system is addressed. When i say system, it is not only the content of the school curriculum but in its en-

tirety, how it is managed, and most importantly how we as a nation view education. first to blame is the continued failure of the Philippine governments to set the development direction for this country. The development agenda of the country is the basic framework that should dictate what type of education system we should have. its that simple. all we need to do is to find an anchor to all the efforts, and since this is absent, then what standards or quality are we talking about? every administration promises change for the better, but their failure to define what they intend to achieve leaves everyone, including those in the education sector, guessing. Second, we tolerate the notion that quality education is only for the privileged which only leads to commercialization. Though the right to education is recognized, the private sector is left to themselves to take advantage of the opportunity to define their own concept of quality, thus creating the presumed gap against the public system. Schools offer courses that

are based on business interest rather than the countrys development agenda. When the demand for nurses abroad swelled, almost all schools offered nursing courses until the glut occurred. Schools dont show remorse for the fate of the students. They simply ignore their liability and look again for other lucrative courses to offer. even the glamour of working in a media company is used to lure students to take mass communication courses despite its very narrow opportunities. now, we are again focusing our attention on basic education, however, what it intends to achieve still remains a puzzle. The quest for quality education without any direction leaves private schools in a frenzy to lure client students. Many schools claim to offer quality education to the extent of teaching students as early as grade two or three in advance mathematics and algebra, or to make their course offering more palatable to parents while grade one students are offered ridiculous lessons on identifying the parts of a cell

phone! They make it hard for the child to pass the subjects designed to impress the general public the schools own perception of quality education, thereby causing additional financial burden on parents to get the services of tutors for their children. We seem to forget, that quality education must be linked to the nations agenda, particularly human resources development. We need an education system that effectively responds to that requirement by effectively managing and strengthening the cognitive growth of our children. Though we are in a technological age, our children are still human beings that grow according to their biological sequence of growth and mental development. There are no shortcuts. Our ignorance erodes our childrens will to learn instead. The development direction of this country cones first; its goals and strategies, which will guide all efforts in nation building including the human resources before recommending interventions to change the educational system. in sum, an effective education system is a system that should be responsive to the goals in the nations agenda and with a clear and established role in the overall effort. Without it, with great certainty, after the K+12 is implemented, fingers will again point in different directions to put the blame. For comments, e-mail to rolanalex@yahoo.com

when money talks, everybody listens

n old but popular saying tells us that money cant buy happiness. Do you agree? if you dont, youre right! according to a study by the university of Warwick in london, england, money Can and DOeS buy happiness. Well, not literally, of course. You see, one just doesnt go out and buy happiness over the counter in a convenience store. its not a consumable item, you know. The Warwick study says that one needs a lot of money to be truly happy, and the degree of happiness depends on the amount of money one has in the bank. So, there you are more money equals greater happiness. Sounds logical, doesnt it? But, is it lasting? now, how much brings true happiness? One million uS dollars, the study says. Converted to pesos, thats a bit over forty-three million pesos these days (give or take), enough to

last several lifetimes for the average Pinoy family if properly managed. The london study reveals that a substantial amount of money thousands of dollars can definitely cause positive changes in peoples lifestyle. first, they begin to feel a marked improvement in their psychological health. Second, they begin to have more self confidence and show a pronounced happy disposition. The study concludes, quite strongly, that indeed and in fact, MOneY CHangeS people, more than anything else. Money may be an ab-

stract thing in one sense-, but it is discernible in ones body language, eyes and face. a happy person exudes an aura of confidence and contentment. He/she talks lucidly and moves smartly, even exhibiting some traces of arrogance and unmistakeable bravura. now, what kind of money brings happiness to people? The london study lists the following categories: inheritance money these are tax-free; lottery earned or through successful business ventures; Retirement money, at least one million dollars;

How credible is the london study? its unquestionable. a hundred of researchers toiled for 10 years collating information and talking to more than 10,000 individuals of different economic social strata. Their answers led to one common indisputable fact: Money works wonders on people. Do you want to be a millionaire and a happy person? Try any of the following tested ways: go to business; 2. go buy a lottery ticket; 3. go after Yamashitas treasures; 4. go find a rich widow/widower; 5. go to Congress. if any of the above fails, then go berserk. Points to ponder: When money talks, everybody listens. The bible says that the love of money is the root of all evil. So, dont love money; love the one who has plenty of it. But, be sure you are loved in return.

f YOu geT someone like Babes Montemayor at Club 888 Marco Polo to talk about tourism, you gotta listen because she knows all about it like the back of her hand, being in the thick of it all---over the years Of course, it also pays to be the head of the Davao Regional Tourism Council, a post she took over after Tagums alma uy wound up her term some months ago. Thats why it wasnt surprising that Babes was really bubbling all over about her recent trip to Beijing, mainland China, where she kept things running smoothly for the Davao Cultural festival that took place there last June 11-30. One thing that really struck her was how the Chinese look at the Philippines and all its 7,000+ islands as a beautiful country and dream about spending their vacation here with their loved ones. Babes discovered the key to bringing them over to this country (especially Davao) boils down to only one word: love. One fast emerging trend she uncovered is the dream of many Chinese to get married in a tropical paradise like the Philippines. This is one emerging market we like to target for our China tourist market--Chinese visitors who want to get married at one of our resorts, Babes told reporters. Tour operators, she said, should start packaging special tour packages that include wedding services---whether Christian or Buddhist---for Chinese visitors. This could attract many of them to come to Davao for their wedding, Babes said. There are many exotic places in Davao where these Chinese visitors can consummate their love complete with a formal wedding ceremony. Resorts like Pearl farm in Samal island, eden nature Park, Malagos nature Resort, Mt apo-Kapatagan in Davao del Sur, White Peak in Comval, etc are just some of the places they could consider where to tie the knot. Chinese visitors, she noted, had been coming in droves over the years, growing by about 15% to 18% yearly and counting in

But this year, government will hire only 10,000 teachers, mainly to fill vacancies in public elementary and high schools. in fact, the beginningof-the-school-year estimate of a shortage of 56,919 teachers did not take into account the new personnel needed for kindergarten. angara added that converting the P1.2 billion saved from the aRMM polls and using it to recruit teachers will result in the hiring of mentors for about 776,000 kindergarten pupils. under the 2011 national budget, P480 million had been appropriated for the conduct of automated polls in the autonomous region. But, according to Comelec chairman Sixto Brillantes, actual projected cost is P1.2 billion and that the Department of Budget and Management has given the Comelec the go-signal to plug the difference using the poll bodys savings in the previous years.

greening program
in its bid to strengthen its environmental program, Compostela Valley launched its Provincial greening Program and Value Oriented leadership Thru environmental Regreening (VOlTeR) Program last June 18 at Barangay San Roque, Maco. This followed on the heels of executive Order no. 26 issued by President Benigno Simeon aquino dated february 24, 2011, declaring the implementation of the national greening Program as a government priority to reduce poverty, promote food security, environmental stability and biodiversity conservation, and enhance climate change mitigation and adaptation. Dubbed 20Million15 Trees, the provincial launching was held in time for Macos foundation week celebration. We have already launched as early as 2004 and this is an urgent call for all of us to heed, said Mayor arthur Carlos Voltaire Rimando. earlier on, a tree planting activity was simultaneously conducted at the municipal tree park and all 37 barangays of Maco followed by a run for a cause participated in by both government and private sectors. Sangguniang Panglalawigan member Ruwel Peter gonzaga, representing gov. arturo uy, said environmental protection had already been one of the administrations priorities and encourages everyone, from merely planting trees, to also take care of them and ensure their survival. Dilg regional director ananias Villacorta lauded gov. uy and local officials for focusing on the greening program. Both local greening programs support and complement eO no. 23, an earlier directive of President aquino, which bans logging in natural and residual forests, as well as Proclamation no. 125, declaring 2011 as the national Year

The latest in a string of community water access programs, the Kibangay elementary School facility can process rainwater through ferrous cement filtration technology coupled with chlorination capable of storing up to 6,000 liters of clean potable water. all added, the programs provide clean water for over 2,275 households and 15,000 students through rainwater harvesting systems in Pavia, iloilo; San Jose, Romblon; Carlos P. garcia, Bohol; Pangapuyan island,

Nokias new flagship N9 gets mixed reviews

OKiaS latest attempt to win back market share with its n9 phone received mixed reviews Wednesday but analysts said the real test will come when it releases new models using the Windows Phone 7 operating system. fans lauded the n9s ease of use without any home button -- a feature of the iPhone and other rivals -- while detractors mocked what they saw as its outdated Meego operating system. unveiled by nokia chief executive Stephen elop at the Communicasia telecoms fair in Singapore this week, fans crowded around the companys booth to try out the device. The n9 has a 99-millimetre (less than four inches), 854 x 480 pixel display and weighs 135 grams (less than five ounces), putting it clearly in iPhone territory. its most distinctive fea-

ture is an all-screen display, with users swiping the screen to switch between applications. The device also has a function that allows users to link it to dedicated accessories such as a headset or speakers by simply touching the phone against them. Being a user of apple, an iPhone, this is light years ahead of what iPhone 3g does, declared Paul Krzystoszek, operations and marketing manager for australian Satellite Communications. The ease of use... the intuitive nature of swiping across the screen instead of using a button, theres no button on it, the plastic casing, i think theyre all things that make it a lot better than what we have already, he told afP after trying the phone at the nokia booth. awesome was how Shahiran Jaafar, chief executive officer of Malaysian firm Microtel Systems and user of an iPhone 3g, described the n9. The fact that you can just swipe it and it goes back to whatever screen that you need it to go back to, the fact that it can show all the open tasks thats available, thats fantastic, he said. it just dwarfs the iPhone, the iPhone is nothing now. However, some were unimpressed by the fact that the n9 was still operating on nokias Meego platform despite the companys impending adoption of the Windows Phone 7 platform later this year. i have a problem with... the operating system, said Phoosith Ratpiyasoontorn, a Thai systems integration engineer, lamenting that Meego lacked user volume and compatibility with many applications. Technological consultancy firm Ovums consumer information technology analyst Tim Renowden said the true test of whether nokia can reverse its sagging fortunes will be when its new handsets using Windows Phone 7 are rolled out. The n9 is an interesting demonstration that nokia can still build excellent hardware, and it shows the progress made on the Meego OS, he said. But it doesnt change the fact that most nokia fans will be waiting for the first Windows Phone 7 handsets to arrive later this year, he told afP. With nokias focus shifting to Windows Phone 7 its hard to get excited about Meego on nokia hardware, despite the apparent merits of the n9 itself. Ratpiyasoontorn added that the choice for him would be clear if the n9 was stacked up against the iPhone. iPhone for sure because

the ecosystem, they have a lot more content, more applications, he said. in finland, nokia touted the virtues of Meego as the n9 was unveiled in asia. it reflects a change in philosophy, hardware and software coming together at

nokia in a very specific way to create a device, said Peter Skillman, nokia Vice President of Services and Meego Design. This impacts everything from smartphones to lowend phones right across the board.

EDGEDAVAO THE BUSINESS PAPER YOUTH TRENDS

DMitteDLy, a hard and jaded Partyphile like myself have little inclinations on becoming too emotional. in fact, only three things in life make me emotional: good food, good drinks, and weekends. and the emotion i choose to feel when faced with these three elements of bliss is happiness. so yes, i was happyecstaticwhen i found out that one of the few places that could offer all three elements of my happiness was now in Davao.

Friday state of mind a

tGi Fridays, as you probably already know (unless of course if you have been living under a rock these past few months, which has been out-of-chic since obamas death inside a cave) opened some time at the end of May (2011 of course. Check the date on top of the page in case you are reading this some time in the distant future) in abreeza Mall. yes, the one owned by the ayalas, along JP Laurel. Fridays actually started out as a bar, and even though they gained popularity in the country for being a casual dining resto, they could not forego the bar because it is a very important part of their identity. But of course, this is not what you want to read about. i know what your thought process is when you step inside Fridays. you got here thinking that you are about to enjoy really good food. and then, all of a sudden, a huge bar comes into your line of sight. suddenly, you start thinking twice about having some food. alcohol, of course, is always better than solid food (well, for most of us, that is). But then of course, you decide to do what you went there for: eat. at the back of your mind, you are thankful that you decided to skip their cocktails because you would not really know what to order. and that is where i come in. Being the Partyphile you love (or hate) i have whipped up a review of six of their best-sellers. so no. Do not expect me to say bad things about their drinks because: 1.) They gave them to

me for free. 2.) These are bestsellers for a reason. 3.) They are just too good to bash. so without further ado, here are six of the cocktails you must definitely check out at tGi Fridays: The Classc Mojito: This cocktail is the king of all cocktails as far as tGi Fridays is concerned. Their Mojitos are the stuff of Urban (Cocktail) Legends. Have you ever read passages and stories about the power of a Mojito to transport the drinker to a beachside setting with a bevy of friends in tow, and a sunny disposition to boot? well, i havent either. But that is exactly where this cool and citrusy Mojito takes you. if this cocktail does not refresh you and remove all the stress that

has pent up from whatever it is you do (work, school, or shop), then nothing else in the world can. This cocktail tastes like a citrusy, minty, fizzy burst in your mouth. it is cool and calming and is made with rum. How can you go wrong with that? oh, and to make things even better, tGi Fridays offers Bottomless Classc Mojitos from 4PM until closing time at only Pesos 305. and do not even try to argue that you can buy two buckets of beer with that money in your friendly neighbourhood sari-sari store. These Mojitos are BottoMLess. nuff said. The Margarita: served on the rocks, this classic cocktail is one of the more popular

items on their cocktail menu. if feels like a shower of citrus and alcohol in your mouth, that is bound to make your knees weak with one sip. Dont tell me i didnt warn you. This cocktail is potent but is easy on the palette. in fact, while i was sampling this cocktail, a fine gentleman from Japan kept on giggling beside me. turns out, he has had 6 servings of this cocktail and it was not even 6 PM. it seems like, with the Margarita, you just can not stop with one. a well-made cocktail is good in any language, i guess. whats in it? tGi Fridays very own Margarita Mix, triple sec (a citrus-based liquor; do your own research to find out why it got its special name), and tequila. alright. i am ending this paragraph here. tequila should be enough to convince you. The Electric Lemonade: ok. so you think that Lemonade is a boring drink. it is kind of flat and one-sided. it is simply lemon, sugar, and water. right? right. Thankfully, the Partyphile Gods have blessed us with alcohol; and this makes everything a little better. so, tGi Fridays serves up a gorgeous electric Lemonade: a combination of Lemonade, some really good Vodka, and some Blue stuff. it might be Blue Curacao; it might be not. But at this point, would you really care? i wouldnt too. all i care about is a good cocktail; and this might be a good introduction for somebody who hasnt grown accustomed to cocktails just yet. if you are new to the whole cocktaildrinking bandwagon; then this is the one for you. oh, and by the way, tGi Fridays (as well as most of the food establishments at the Ground Floor of abreeza) will be extending their closing time to two in the morning. so please, for the love of alcohol, grow accustomed to cocktails now. all in all, the cocktails at tGi Fridays are above par. These yummy alcoholic treats, combined with some finger food (Ballpark nachos, perhaps) seem to be the perfect combination to transport you a weekend-state-of-mind, at any day of the week. after all, in here, it is always Friday.

golfers of the week
HeRe are no more superlatives to be written. What Rory Mcilroy achieved at Congressional was nothing short of unbelievable. Rory simply blew away the worlds best golfers to break and set records which will stand for a long time. ever since Rory stepped into our lives through the Darren Clarke foundation nearly 10 years ago, we have known that he possessed a rare and special talent. That talent turned itself into the recent uS Open champion in the shadow of americas capital and with the golfing world wide-eyed and and mouths agape at what they had just witnessed. To win by eight shots anywhere, anytime is remarkable. To do it at a major championship is incredible. Comparisons with past winners and current champions are inevitable, but without doubt i believe we are entering a other requirements for them to compete in national tournaments. Those cynics who kept harping back to what happened at augusta when Rory let a healthy lead slip away, did not appreciate the make-up of this 22-year-old. it was never going to eat into his heart and soul, it was only going to make him all the more determined to show how much he learns from his experiences. and he did it in the most fantastic fashion. it was probably iSMs greatest week in all because all our four weekend survivors finished in the top 10. lee Westwood was a highly creditable third considering he was four over par after round one, and both our South african major champions, louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, finished alongside one another tied for 9th. So, now we hold three out of the four grand slam titles with the uS Pgas

Laguna stops Pacman Warriors, score 69-61

scored eight points to go with seven rebounds in the emotionpacked contest. The golden lions victory was marred by a skirmish between eJ feihl and Jam alfad after a rebound play, resulting in both players ejection. Robert Sanz led the way for the golden lions with 13 points on top of nine rebounds while glenn Bolocon had 13. louie Medalla was the only Warrior in twin digits with 10 markers as the whole squad struggled. earlier in the day, Cebu landmasters RDaK-Mandaue planted one foot into Satur-

HiS corner is giving a space to an interesting article written by Manny Pacquiaos trainer, alex ariza to let you know how our world boxing champion maintains his stamina. enjoy and learn. *** Stamina has a lot to do with your heart rate- how relaxed are you, but more importantly, what happens to your breathing pattern once your heart rate elevates. How you breathe will determine the amount of oxygen your body gets in- the longer you will last in a fight. 1st off there are different breathing techniques while running that can be employed for exercises. i have even heard so much as, breathe through you nose and your mouth at the same time, which i believe to be impossible. i will discuss this in a video blog. if you do your research you will read Breathe through your nose and out through your mouth. You will read this is the way to train, because it maximizes air to your lungs. When you get more air to your lungs you will be able to perform your cardio routine for a longer period or time. in the corner i do have my fighters breathe through their nose and out through their mouth in order to relax, refuel, and get ready for the next round. Breathing through your nose and out through your mouth is an excellent way to calm your body down and get the maximum amount of oxygen to your lungs, but it is not a realistic way to train when you are training for a fight, because it is not the way you will breathe during the fight itself. i always train my fighters to breathe through their mouth and out their nose. This is realistic during the fight. i want my fighters to have a rhythm to their breathing, maximizing the realities they will feel when they get in a war during the fight. if i was to train my days finals by edging the ilocos Sur CS Tigers, 66-64, and remained undefeated in two starts in the tournament supported by San Miguel, Molten, Summit natural Drinking Water and accel. Making up for his scoreless performance the other day, ariel Capus exploded for 20 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals to make

fighters to breath through their nose and out their mouth then they would not be prepared for what was ahead. Their reality is they will be in a fight that will raise their heart rate to a level causing them to breathe through their mouths in order to get the amount of air their body is demanding from them at that very moment. When this happens in a fight my fighters are mentally and physically ready for it. This is why i like swimming so much. it teaches your to breathe through your mouth and slowly let the air our of your nose. even when you are fatigued in the water and your heart rate is pounding your have to stay to that same rhythm; in through your mouth and slowly let it trickle out your nose. in a fight and your body forces your to breathe through your mouth and when you train for this action to occur you are 100% comfortable and ready for it. if you werent then your heart rate would go even higher, causing you to become exhausted sooner. if you are not trained for this and your body goes against something it has been trained for it will go into a panic. guess what happens when your body goes into a panic? it gets drained even faster, causing more fatigue to set in. This is one of the main reason you see Pacquiao strong in the later rounds, it is because his breathing patterns up for the absence of team leader Mark Magsumbol who opted to rest his injured back from a hard fall the day earlier in their win over the golden lions. Harold Sta. Cruz provided support with 11 points and seven rebounds. Raymond aguilar paced the CS Tigers of gov. luis Chavit Singson and coach Johnedel Cardel with 17 points and 10 re-

are something he has come equipped to learning and mastering. i can not emphasize this aspect of training enough. if you are in a fight and start breathing in a way you have not trained your body to become accustomed to it will panic and you will exhaust yourself. There, i have let out a secret and one of the reasons you see what you see in all of my fighters. Sometimes it is hard for me to write these blogs, because i have to let out what my specialties are, but i feel i have the best boxers in the world and if some other boxer learns some of my techniques then so be it, we will still beat them! Plus, i have more conditioning methods than just this. i am letting out the little things to let people know the truth. The truth is, their fighters, or they themselves, are not doing things the proper way. Most boxers are behind the times or they are not working with someone that knows what he or she is doing. for me this is easy. i think about it in my sleep. i figure things out and i apply them to my fighters. We all have our gifts in life. Most of the gifts people have are not from something they read out of a text book; it is something that was written in a text book because of what they know. until next Time Only on Mp8.ph. alex ariza bounds. Chito Jaime scored 14 points and had six rebounds. While the wards of Joe Soberano, Rick King and coach Jun Tan prepare to go for their third weekly trophy, the CS Tigers are facing the grim possibility of not qualifying for next months Super leg unless they end their current skid their fourth straight and 10th overall loss in 14 games.
