We also recognize that landmark buildings often fit within existing campuses, requiring a deft balance between unique identity and contextual fit with surrounding buildings and natural features. adaptability and flexibility are necessary to accommodate changing technologies, programs and teaching styles.

universities and colleges have been among the first institutions to embrace sustainability and commitment to the environment as core values, driven by demand from students and faculty. Hok is advancing sustainable design for every building type, geographic region and budget level. our people are impassioned by the opportunity to design healthy, environmentally friendly buildings that improve our planets overall environmental condition.

Designing for Existing Campuses:

Most canadian college and university campuses are struggling to identify opportunities for future orderly growth within an existing campus framework. canadas largest college and university campuses are becoming in fact selfcontained cities with all the required amenities and facilities for living, working, studying, and enjoying life. yes, they have teaching facilities but they also have cafes and restaurants, athletic facilities, child care centres, offices, research centres, healthcare centres, transit hubs, and retail services of all kinds, including dry cleaners, grocery stores, post offices, and travel agents. add to this, the normal list of teaching facilities labs, large lecture theatres, breakout spaces, spaces for spontaneous interaction, outdoor gathering spaces and it is evident that, for most institutions, working with an architecture firm with experience beyond the educational sector is a great advantage. Hok works in almost every industry sector. We tailor our teams to individual projects and are able to pull together quickly the multi-disciplinary experts who can work together and satisfy a multitude of campus needs. hoK advance Strategies works with clients to align their core strategies with their real estate portfolios, facilities, workplaces and information systems to effectively master change. We help clients make value-based decisions that achieve clear, quantifiable results over a buildings entire lifecycle. a multidisciplinary group, we are leaders, analysts, strategists, listeners, planners, communicators, and change agents who use our knowledge and experience to help organizations navigate through complex business challenges. hoKs Science + technology group is setting international trends in the programming, planning and design of the worlds most complex science and research facilities. our in-house lab programmers, planners, architects, and project managers offer analysis, planning and design services exclusively for science and technology projects. We have designed more than 45 million

square feet of research, development and production facilities for academic, corporate, and government clients and regularly receive recognition for innovation and design excellence.

hoKs healthcare teams of healthcare architects, medical planners, interior designers, and landscape architects are working at the forefront of innovative healthcare facilities around the world. Hok has facilitated translational research environments, bringing healthcare researchers, healthcare providers and patients together in an interactive and collaborative environment of healing. this translates into leading integration of teaching and practice environments in the health sciences.

hoKs workplace Solutions teams draw on current benchmarking trends to help companies reduce occupancy costs, leverage technology, attract and keep the best people, and enhance brand image. But we also keep an eye on the future, designing flexible environments to accommodate changing technologies and work processes. Leveraging this knowledge helps optimize the effectiveness of faculty, research and administration environments.

hoKs hospitality teams of interior designers, architects, planners, and brand specialists are known for creatively designed room plans that enhance revenue and maximize guest appeal as well as lobbies and public spaces that help attract repeat visits. as well, our vast experience helps us determine the appropriate balance of entertainment, retail, food and beverage services, and accommodation. Many institutions are exploring opportunities to integrate hospitality environments to both support core teaching and research activities as well as leverage conference facilities.

the hoK / Biomimicry group

Hok works in alliance with the Biomimicry Group, the worlds premier bioinspired innovation company, to use natures principles to help solve design and engineering challenges sustainably. this exclusive relationship equips us to integrate natures innovations into the planning and design of buildings, communities and cities worldwide and promises to reduce the negative environmental impact of our projects. Engaging the Biomimcry Group in our design process provides a forum of critical intersection, promoting genuine understanding and respect among the entire project team. this unique partnership provides a fundamentally different way of looking at things. We are not designing objects, we are designing a symbiotic way of living through observing and assimilating a delicate and dynamic choreography between societies of flora and fauna, and even humans. this is not a new approach rather it is one that has been embraced by older, so-called less sophisticated societies for centuries. typically the Hok and Biomimicry team explore together the principle that life creates conditions conducive to life. the result is bio-mimetically inspired design, locally attuned and resiliently responsive to naturally integrated cyclic processes. designs that follow the natural worlds lead utilize benign manufacturing, leverage interdependencies, and optimize rather than maximize energy use to produce awe-inspiring built form.

Heritage Sensitivity Interactive Design Design - Build

Humber College
academic Building Toronto, Ontario
When completed in the summer of 2011, the L Building will be the centrepiece of Humbers Lakeshore campus, the historically designated site of the Former Lakeshore psychiatric Hospital. the design complements the scale of the existing historical buildings and academic quadrangle. its ceremonial entrance is on axis with the most prominent building on the quad. its materials palette of masonry, glass, zinc, wood and concrete is subdued in deference to its neighbours. in spite of the aggressive design-build schedule, the Hok team engaged in extensive research and study into the sites history and facilitated an interactive design process with faculty and students.

Edmonton clinic Health academy Edmonton, Alberta

Hoks design team recognized early on that the large floor plates of this 570,500-squarefoot academic health sciences facility would make orientation and wayfinding a major issue for its 3,500 students. the design solution is a clearly articulated, highly accessible Main street, which acts as the primary circulation route. this Main street, along with open vertical circulation fosters student, faculty and researcher interaction. Layered transparency and abundant natural light at the buildings lower levels, the focus of student activity, will encourage a culture of movement and serendipitous interaction. the LEEd registered project will open in september, 2011.
