JUDILLEEN D. ABDILLA MAHARDIKA INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, INC Bongao, Tawi-Tawi THE LEVEL OF PERFORMANCE OF THE GRADE VI PUPILS OF PROVINCIAL HOUSING ELEMENTARY SCHOOL JAAPAR H. HASSAN

Adviser:

This study was focused on the level of performance of the Grade VI pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School on Phonology. Specifically, this study is reported to answer the following questions: 1. What is the level of performance of the respondents in the segmental phonemes; 1.1 vowel sounds; 1.2.consonant sounds;
1.3. silent phonemes?

2. Is there a significant difference on the level of performance of Grade VI pupils of the Provincial Housing Elementary School? In the light of the presentation, analysis and interpretation of the result, the following were the findings: 1. The grade VI Pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School obtained a good level of performance in vowel sounds with a mean score of 14.4.

vii

2. The grade VI Pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School on the other hand gained a poor level of performance in both consonant sound and silent graphemes with a mean score 7.33 and 8.73 respectively. 3. The Grade VI Pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School obtained the overall mean score of 10.15 with the level of performance of satisfactory. Based on the analysis of the different findings in this study, the following conclusions were drawn: 1. The Grade VI Pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School have shown a better performance in the English vowel tested. This implied that these have internalized the skills in said test and that they only need to enhance their skills to obtain an outstanding level of performance.
2. The Grade VI Pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School showed

relatively poor skill in both English silent graphemes and consonant sound. These concerned pupils need to have more practice, exercise, and drills in the silent graphemes and consonant sound to improve and enhance their skills. 3. Overall, the respondents were satisfactory performers. Based on the findings and conclusion, the following are highly recommended:
1. The Grade VI Pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School need to

enhance their performance in both silent graphemes and consonant sound by engaging them in classroom activities especially in drills an speaking discourse.

This study was focused on the level of performance of the Grade VI pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School on Phonology. Specifically, this study is reported to answer the following questions: 1. What is the level of performance of the respondents in the segmental phonemes; 1.1 vowel sounds; 1.2.consonant sounds;
1.3. silent phonemes?

2. Is there a significant difference on the level of performance of Grade VI pupils of the Provincial Housing Elementary School? Null Hypothesis There is no significant difference on This study was focused on the level of performance of the Grade VI pupils of Provincial Housing Elementary School on Phonology. Significance of the Study Any educational research endeavor is geared towards improvements of the quality of education in any level. This is because the empirical findings may assists the school in one way or another in designing measures for said upliftment. As such, this study will specifically benefit the following: School Administrator the result of this study will serve as basis in setting up standards and policies relevant to the improvement and quality of language arts instruction program.

Curriculum Developers the findings of this study would provide them direction to develop materials focusing on segmental phonemes geared towards upgrading and satisfying the students need. Students the result of this study would provide them necessary background in analyzing the adequacy of their preparation for communication situations. Readers feedback would be provided and their knowledge will be enriched with regard to segmental phonemes. Educational Researcher the findings of this study would serve them as spring board in conducting studies related to present study. Scope and Delimitation of the Study A limitation of this study is the giving of oral assessment test to the respondents on Phonology. The test will covered particularly /iy/ and /ae/ and /uw/ and /ow/ vowel sounds and the consonants sounds namely; /ts/ and /ch/, /s/, and /sh/, the silent graphemes. This was conducted at Provincial Housing Elementary School during the second semester of academic year 2010-2011. As in the study they refer to the /ts/ and /ch/ sounds that will be tested in this study.

Vowel pertain to speech sound produced by the absence of a very little obstruction of air stream passing in the oral cavity. This refers to the /iy/, /ae/, /uw/, /ow/ sounds that will be tested to the respondents of this study. Silent Graphemes refer to the letter that silently occur either initial and final distribution of words.
