A simple, economical solution to torsional vibration problems.

Dampens harmful torsional vibrations on all types of internal combustion engines. Reduces stresses in engine crankshaft and driveline components. Alloy steel leaf spring design and oil displacement principle provide long life. Ideal for pump, compressor and turbine applications. Combines perfectly with Airflex drum-type clutch for a compact coupling. Torque range up to 9,566,000 lb. in.

Application
For displacement of torsionally critical speeds and damping of unavoidable torsional vibrations in all types and sizes of internal combustion engines, particularly for diesel engines. Also meets the demands of all sorts of other machinery, such as pumps, compressors and turbines. Proven in many dieselpowered ships built throughout the world.

Advantages
Maximum damping Optimum flexibility Maximum reliability Minimum size and weight No aging Negligible wear and little maintenance Unaffected by temperature, dust and oil Maximum noise reduction High speed operation

Description
The coupling consists of a primary and a secondary part with groups of radial leaf springs arranged between them. The assemblies of these parts form chambers which are filled with oil. Deflecting the springs forces oil from one chamber to the other. This movement of oil brakes the relative movement between the parts and vibrations are damped. The characteristics of damping and elasticity of the Geislinger Coupling can be adapted to meet the requirements of nearly every installation. Special designs with non-standard dimensions and elasticities or allowances for higher speed or shaft misalignment can also be provided.

Capacities
Torque range: 200-110,000 mkp (17,400-9,566,000 Lb. In.) o o Static Twist under effective torque: 2.6 - 9.2 Damping Coefficient = Damping Torque = 0.5 - 0.9 Elastic Torque Admissible Ambient Temperature: o o Standard Design: 90 C (194 F) o o Special Design: 140 C (284 F) Admissible speed practically unlimited

Application
Mounts on the free end of an internal combustion engine crankshaft for damping of torsional vibrations excited by the engine.

Advantages
Compact size-equal damping with reduced size and weight or increased damping with same size, when compared to a plain viscous damper. Reduced power loss Optimum application flexibility with tuned elasticity and damping Primary mass very small in comparison with secondary mass No Aging Maximum reliability by using engine lubricating oil as the damping liquid

Description
The construction of the damper is similar to the coupling groups of radial leaf springs arranged between a primary and secondary part. However, the mounting arrangements differ. The coupling mounting provides for an input and an output. The damper inner member is fixed to the free end of a crankshaft with the outer member (flywheel mass) elastically connected through the leaf springs. The elasticity is provided by the springs. The damping is determined by the clearances between the primary and secondary parts.

Capacities
Admissible Ambient Temperature: Standard Design: 90oC (194oF) Special Design: 140oC (284oF)

Effectively dampens torsional vibrations

The ever-increasing power outputs of engines being designed and built today require close attention by the designer to the problems of torsional vibration. The EatonGeislinger Coupling offers a simple, economical solution to these problems. Using highly elastic leaf springs for torsional flexibility combined with oil displacement damping, the Geislinger Coupling shifts major critical speeds outside of the engine operating speed range and effectively dampens torsional vibrations. The high damping available when using the coupling results in lower stresses in the engine crankshaft and all drive line components. Damping is five to ten times higher than a comparable rubber coupling. Since the unit has no axial stiffness, axial vibration cannot be transmitted from the prime mover to the driven machine. Thermal shaft growth and angular and parallel misalignment is easily accommodated with the standard Geislinger Coupling.

Alloy steel leaf spring design and oil displacement principle provides long life and effective damping.

Shown at the left is a close-up view of a typical leaf spring group (1) from a Geislinger Coupling. The springs are being deflected due to a torque load in a counter-clockwise direction. The intermediate pieces (2) hold the spring packs tightly in place on their outer ends. The inner ends of the springs fit into carefully machined slots in the coupling inner member (5) leaving the springs free to flex when subjected to torque and vibratory loads. Oil fills the cavities (3) formed between the springs and intermediate pieces and is forced back and forth thru the gap (4) as the springs deflect. This movement of oil brakes the relative movement between the parts and vibrations are damped. Since all the moving parts are submerged in oil, wear is minimal resulting in a long, trouble free service life. To protect the springs from overstrain, their deflection is limited by means of buffers.

Geislinger torsional coupling and the Airflex drum-type air clutch...the perfect combination!
The Geislinger torsional coupling mates perfectly with an Airflex drum-type air clutch for a compact unit between the engine and driven machinery. These standard clutch coupling combinations are available for applications from 650 HP to 30,000 HP.

Used throughout the world

Hundreds of Airflex clutch and Eaton/Geislinger coupling combinations are in service throughout the world. The U.S. Navy fuel tanker shown is powered by two identical systems consisting of a 16,500 HP engine, running at 400 RPM driving through a BC125 Eaton/Geislinger coupling, an Eaton/Geislinger flexible link and an Airflex dual 52VC clutch.
