Dutch roll is an oscillatory motion of an aircraft where it yaws and rolls from side to side in an uncoordinated manner. This motion is caused by weaker directional stability compared to lateral stability. As an aircraft rolls, it induces a sideslip that directional stability attempts to correct, but lags behind the restoring roll force. This causes the aircraft to overshoot and reverse the motion, resulting in the oscillation. Dutch roll periods typically range from a few seconds to over a minute depending on the aircraft size. While dangerous if not damped, modern aircraft have yaw dampers installed to reduce Dutch roll tendencies.
