The macro trends of the last two years fallout from the economic crisis

A hangover from the economic crisis. but there are green shoots of recovery..
2010 saw an increase in per head training spend of 2% (US) still well behind 2007 levels

Blended learning initiatives and coaching are main beneficiaries of training spend (2010 and into 2011)

Technology enabled L&D continues to increase, but uptake is not consistent across companies, geographies or generations

10% increase in spend on learning tools and technologies in US (Bersin, 2010 review)

Increase in sourcing of full service provision Learning Platforms / Learning Centers + content

1 in 4 UK companies are allocating 30% or more of their available training budget to learning technologies compared to one in 10 in 2008.

What can we take away from this afternoon?

The learning population is starting to take more control some challenging questions for Learning Professionals and Line Managers.....
Emerging learning tools are growing in popularity and are enhancing traditional methods rather than replacing them

29

The mix of learning provision is crucially important to the Learning population The mix completes the learning portfolio Traditional training is NOT being driven into EXTINCTION Jumping too quickly for new tools / delivery mechanisms may stop us from going back to basics learners want a mix that is useful The human touch is more important to the Learning population in 2011 than at any time within the past 3 years!

The human MIX though is changing

Coaching and On the job learning are proving to be powerful tools in the current economic climate and are valued highly by todays younger tech savvy generation as well as the more experienced workforce On the job learning is preferred to classroom training even in countries where legislative requirements favour a more traditional approach > a gap between the need and what is easy to do....?

NOW is the time for Learning Professionals to collaborate, advise and manage the most appropriate mix for their Learning Populations.

30

Employees turn to their manager for information about training but to expert coaches/tutors for the training itself Do managers need more training? Is L&D being bypassed? What can L&D do to gain greater visibility?
There are key differences in attitudes towards training between the trained and the untrained and the different generations in the workforce Collaborate across generations, cultures, borders > personalise with controls Become more inclusive post economic crisis > seize the potential The future is becoming clearer....and simpler in some ways..... Rapid uptake of smart-phone and tablet computing is driving mobile learning and serious games which are set to have a major impact in the short term (see Cegos White Paper) Not a fad, not a replacement, but contributors to a complete learning provision portfolio in line with the needs and wants of the Learning population

Thank you for your participation and contributions
