Wi-Fi Backhaul over ProST-WiFi

Key Advantages: Against DSL Lower OPEX costs than using SDSL Technology for Backhaul
SDSL drives expensive monthly Opex charges (regardless of usage) Longer Reach, not limited by SDSL uplink restrictions SDSL typically is restricted to less than 2km Can be installed at any location, Street-Light, Power Pole, etc Lots of places where there is no copper or Fibre 802.16 QoS is used to map different traffic into individual QoS, CIR and MIR pipes Allows a single Access Point to support N Retail Operators using Virtual SSIDs

Better Deployment Characteristics than SDSL

Better QoS than DSL

Against Wi-Fi Mesh Delivers Real QoS

802.16 QoS is used to map different traffic is into separate 802.16 QoS Pipes Combined WiMAX Backhaul and Wi-Fi AP is typically 50% less than similar Wi-Fi Mesh Nodes (>10 nodes) Links between nodes are typically less than 100m in Built-up Areas Wi-Fi Mesh is a spectrum Hog! Typically using all of 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz simultaneously
Commercial in Confidence: All Rights Reserved
9

Much lower Cost per Node than Wi-Fi Mesh Wi-FI Mesh requires LOS or Near-LOS between Nodes Uses Less Spectrum that Wi-Fi Mesh

802.16-2004 Nomadic Operation

Self-installation by the end-user requires full support for Nomadic Operation.
There are two sides to this The Network Infrastructure (BS and NMS) The Indoor Self-Install CPE

Network Infrastructure
Auto-Discovery: NMS automatically enters CPEs in database Auto-Provisioning: Service Products are applied to CPEs Automatically

Indoor Self-Install CPEs

Auto-Connect: Scan all available channels and pick the best one Auto-Configuration: CPE is provisioned / set-up by Base Station

An Indoor CPE is only part the story

Base Station Overview

A typical Access Network will be made up of a number of different Base Station types including:
Micro-cells, providing coverage and capacity in-fill Macro-cells, providing RF coverage footprint

Airspans AS.MAX Base Station range maps directly to these deployment models:
MicroMAX-SOC & MicroMAX-SDR provide micro-cell coverage to indoor CPE (EasyST), and macro-cell coverage for outdoor CPE (ProST) in rural deployments. MacroMAX & HiperMAX-1&2 provides macro-cell coverage to indoor CPE (EasyST) with a choice of configurations depending on deployment type (rural, sub-urban & urban). Also provides macro-cell coverage to outdoor CPE (ProST). HiperMAX-4&8 provides macro-cell coverage to portable devices, indoor CPE (EasyST) and outdoor CPE (ProST).

Network Support for Indoor Self Install CPE

There are a number of challenges around providing indoor, self install coverage at 3.5GHz:
Building Penetration Loss and Shadowing Drives the need for an additional >20dB link budget when compared to traditional FWA with roof mounted CPE. Cell sizes inevitably shrink, but are maximised through use of smart antenna techniques ie. Diversity & AAS with MacroMAX and HiperMAX Need for zero skill installation User should not be expected to point the CPE antenna at the basestation This drives the need for omni-directional CPE antenna and results in lower gain CPE antennas. EasyST includes a 4x90deg switched antenna array providing omni coverage but maximising antenna gain. Acceptable CPE Form Factor CPE must be small results in low antenna gains and low power consumption Uplink Subchannelisation is key to providing adequate link budget in the uplink with low power (=small size & low cost) Tx amplifiers. 802.16-2004 allows 1/16 subchannelisation which adds 12dB to the link budget
