World Afghan & Pillows

PANEL 2 Work as for panel 1, making lower and upper points with D and foll chart 2. PANEL 3 Work as for panel 1, making lower and upper points with C and foll chart 3.
PANEL 4 Work as for panel 1, making lower and upper points with D and foll chart 4. FINISHING With RS facing, crochet hook and matching color on afghan, work sc evenly around outer edge of afghan working 3 sc in each point of afghan. Tassels Cut sixteen 10"/25.5cm lengths of a color. Tie in the center with a 6"/15.5cm length of fishing line. Thread tapestry needle with tied center fishing line. Pull through hole in bead. Pull tightly. Sew tassel to point. Trim tassel to 312"/9cm or desired length. Repeat for all 16 points of afghan using desired colors and beads.

Tassels Cut sixteen 10"/25,5cm lengths of D. Attach to each point as in afghan.

PILLOW WITH STRIPED BUTTONED BACK


Materials 1 ball each #809 teal (A) and #810 magenta (C) Leftover yarns from afghan for back stripes and side triangles Yellow and green embroidery floss Size 5 (3.75mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE Size E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook Bobbins and stitch markers Nine 34"/20mm glass buttons from One World Button Supply Company Tapestry needle 18"/46cm square pillow form Front With A, cast on 83 sts. Work in St st for 16 rows. Note If desired, outline 63 sts and 91 rows of Africa motif, or outline any desired area, for easier reading. This sample is knit with solid color motifs, omitting colors for individual countries. Beg chart 3 Next row (RS) Work 10 sts A, 63 sts foll chart 3 for Africa motif, 10 sts A. Cont as established until 91 rows of motif have been worked. Work 17 rows more A. Bind off. Back (make 2 pieces) NOTE Stripes are random. Change colors every 2 or 4 rows as desired. Cast on 41 sts. Work in garter st, changing colors as desired, until piece measures same lenth as front piece. Bind off. Button flap Along one side edge of one back piece, with C, pick up and k 84 sts. Work in garter st for 1"/2.5cm. Bind off. Place markers on picked-up row of flap for 9 buttons, the first and last at outside edges and 7 other spaced evenly between. Button loop edge Along one side of other back piece, with crochet hook and C, work 1 row of sc along side, working ch-7 opposite markers for button loops. FINISHING Block pieces. With floss, outline motifs with scroll st (see photo). Triangle edging on front piece With RS facing, pick up and k 80 sts (10 sts of each color as desired) along one side of front piece. Working each section of 10 sts separately, work in garter st, dec 1 st each side every other row, until 2 sts rem. K2tog and fasten offone triangle made. Work 7 other triangles in same way. Work edging in same way along other three sides. Triangle edging on back pieces Lay back pieces side by side, overlapping center (button flap under button loop edge). Work triangle edging on all four sides same as front. Sew on buttons. Sew back and front tog.

KNITTED MEASUREMENTS Approx 70"/177.5cm wide X 59"/150cm high including points Materials 312oz/100g skeins (each approx 183yds/167m) of Tahki Yarns/Tahki Stacy Charles, Inc. Donegal Tweed (wool) 8 balls in #809 teal (A) 3 balls in #893 dk orange (B) 2 balls each in #810 magenta (C) and #832 red (D) 1 ball each in #803 bright green (E), #855 pale green (F), #897 gold (G), #896 lt purple (H) and #836 purple (I) One pair size 5 (3.75mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE Crochet hook size G/6 (4.5mm) 5 each Copper beads from One World Button Supply Company in #KUM306, KUM304, and KUM311 Bobbins and stitch holders Tapestry needle Fishing line (optional, for attaching beads and tassels). GAUGE 18 sts and 28 rows to 4"/10cm over St st using size 5 (3.75mm) needles. TAKE TIME TO CHECK GAUGE. NOTES 1 Afghan is knit in four separate panels and sewn together. 2 When changing colors, twist yarns on WS to prevent holes in work. Place sts on a holder. UPPER POINT Dec 1 st each side every other row 15 times, every row once, every other row until there are 3 sts, end with a WS row. K3tog, fasten off last st. PANEL 1 With B, make two lower points. Join points tog on one needle as foll: with RS facing and B, k sts of first point, inc 2 sts evenly across, cast on 1 st, k sts of 2nd point, inc 2 sts evenly across83 sts. P 1 row. Note K first and last st of every row, matching background color, for selvage sts. These sts are NOT shown on charts. Beg chart 1 Next row (RS) K1 (selvage st), work 81 sts foll chart 1, k1 (selvage st). Cont to foll chart in this way through row 337. With B, p next row on WS dec 5 sts evenly across78 sts. Next row (RS) Work across 39 sts, join second ball of B and work across last 39 sts. Working each piece separately, work upper point.

Materials 1 ball each #809 teal (A), #810 magenta (C), #832 red (D), #855 pale green (F), #897 gold (G) Yellow embroidery floss Size 5 (3.75mm) needles OR SIZE TO OBTAIN GAUGE Size E/4 (3.5mm) crochet hook Stitch holders and bobbins 1 yard/1 meter 112"/4cm wide orange gros grain ribbon 2 yards/2 meters 34"/2cm wide orange gros grain ribbon 12 yard/.5 meter each orange and magenta silk shantung Eight copper beads for tassels from One World Button Supply Company Tapestry needle 18"/46cm square pillow form Point Border (make 2) With D, work lower point as on afghan39 sts. Set aside. With D make second point as for first. Join points tog on one needle as on afghan, omitting center cast-on st82 sts. P 1 row. Note K first and last st of every row, matching background color, for selvage sts. These sts are NOT shown on charts. Beg chart 1 Next row (RS) K1 (selvage st), beg with 2nd st, work 80 sts foll chart 1, k1 (selvage st). Cont to foll chart in this way (omitting first st) through row 44, but omit compass. (Note If desired, outline 28 sts and 32 rows of compass motif for easier reading.) Next row (RS) Cont chart pat for corner edges, work 27 sts, work 28 sts of compass motif, work to end. Cont in this way through row 61. Work chart in reverse (from row 61 through row 1). Next row (RS) With D, work 41 sts, dec 2 sts; join 2nd ball D and work last 41 sts, dec 2 sts39 sts on each piece. Work upper point as on afghan. FINISHING With RS facing and D, pick up 78 sts evenly along straight side of pillow. Next row (RS) Work across 39 sts in St st. Place rem 39 sts on stitch holder. Cont to work first 39 sts in upper point as on afghan. Work second point border as for first. Work opposite side of pillow as for first side of pillow (four points added). With RS facing, crochet hook and D, work a row of sc evenly around entire edge of pillow, working 2 sc in each point. Steam front. Embroidery Trace letters onto paper. Place in desired position around compass. With floss, back stitch letters over paper. Tear away paper (see below). Backing Fold knitted front of pillow in half, lay on magenta fabric and pin. Cut pattern leaving 14"/1cm to 12"/1.5cm selvage around points and 2"/5cm extra fabric at folded edge. Unfold knitted top and cut 2"/5cm selvage to conform with point. Rep with 2nd color fabric for other side of back of pillow. Fold back 2"/5cm selvage (WS to WS) and pin grosgrain ribbon on RS folded edge. Top stitch side on fold to fabric. Pin 312"/9cm long, 3 4"/2cm wide grosgrain ties evenly spaced along unsewn edge of ribbon. Top stitch in place on unsewn edge. Pin 112"/4cm wide gros grain ribbon to RS of magenta fabric at center edge. Top stitch in place along inside edge. Place gros grain ties opposite sewn ties on orange half. Sew in place. Pin magenta fabric to knitted top (WS facing). Fold and steam selvage under at beg of crochet edge. Sew with blind stitch around entire edge. Rep for other half with orange fabric.
