Hypersensitivit y to drug significant cephatopelvic disproportion, unfavorable fetal position that are undeliverable w/o conservation prior to delivery in obstetric emergencies where the benefit-to-risk ratio for either the mother of fetus favors surgical intervention.

Oxytocic drug
Synthetic drug to ergonovine . Acts directly on the uterine smooth to stimulate the rate, tone, and amplitude of uterine contraction . It induces a rapid, sustained titanic uterotonic effect that shortens the third stage of labor and reduces blood loss. The uterus becomes more sensitive to the drug
Use with caution in sepsis, obliterati ve vascular disease, impaired renal or hepatic function, during the second stage of labor, and during lactation. Do not routinely use IV due to possible induction of sudden hypertens ion and CVA.
Pregnancy, toxemia, hypertensio n. Ergot hypersensiti vity. To induce labor or threatened spontaneous abortions. Administrati on before delivery of the placenta. Use with CYP3A4 inhibitors (e.g., protease inhibitors, macrolide antibiotics, azole antifungal drugs).
CV: Hypertens ion that may be associated with seizure or headache; hypotensi on, acute MI, thrombop hlebitis, palpitation , transient chest pains. GI: N&V, diarrhea, foul taste. CNS: Dizziness, headache, tinnitus, hallucinati ons, seizures.
IM; IV (EME RGEN CIES ONLY ) 0.2 mg q 2-4 hr following delivery of placenta, of the anterior shoulder, or during the puerperiu m. TABL ETS 0.2 mg 3- 4 times per day in the puerperiu m for a maximum of 1 week
