Summer 2011 Bible Study 7/1/2011 All In with Abraham Introduction to the Bible Study: We wanted to pick up on the theme of all in looking at different characters in the Bible. Introduction to the Bible: The Bible is like a love story between God and his people; its made up of a bunch of different genres from poetry to history. The book of Genesis is the story about how Gods people become Gods people. Throughout the summer we will unpack more, but for now we just want you to know how to use the Bible. o How to use the Bible: dont be afraid to use the index at the front of your Bible. o Chapter: verses helps us to find out spot. o Get a journal. $5. Scripture has Characters: Abraham. (Throughout Gods story there are special characters that we focus on, does this mean that they are the only ones? no. But they are significant figures) o One of the main characters is Abraham, whose name in Hebrew means: Father of Multitudes. Av- Father, Rabim Multitude o Old Testament: Hebrew, its not just a language its a culture. Abrahams story isnt just a nice story its a story of an entire people group. It started here. Diving in o His story begins in Genesis 11: 27, but His story takes off in Genesis 12:1-4* and ends in Genesis 22:17-18? o So how do we get from Genesis 12:1-4 to Genesis 22:17-18? o Draw a timeline Exercise: On one end write, Promise on the other, Fulfillment 12:1-4: What are some key words that stand out to you? o How would you feel about leaving everything? o What does God promise him? Mistakes were made. (12:10-20) People suffer over it. Fear vs Trust Timeline: 15:1-16 God reminds Abram what hes going to do through him. o Gods plans can be beyond what you can imagine. o Sometimes this means being patient, but hell remind you that hes good. (15:7) Forcing Gods hand (16:1) Using Hagar. It hurts everyone. But Gods still good (17)* o Gods covenants are like Marriage vows. Timeline: The Birth of Isaac (21:1-7)* o God fulfills his promises. Timeline: Abraham tested (22:1-18)*

Lessons from the Life of Abraham 1. Going all in requires patience, but God will remind you of His faithfulness along the way (15:7) 2. Gods future Gods way. (21:2, 7) a. Hagar represents what happens when we try to take it our way but God uses everything. b. Her story is a reminder of what happens when we confuse this idea: Gods way, our way. But God always redeems our mistakes. 3. God calling is difficult, but He always provides, and reminds you of what he has promised. (22:8) a. Notice 22:19- After everything that goes down, he goes back to his home life. Gods promise still stands even if he never sees it. b. God is about legacy, or what gets passed on. Sometimes this means that God cares about our obedience, not necessarily with results. i. Look at Frodo Baggins. 4. So what does this look like for you? a. If you cant obey the little things that God is calling you to, can you really expect to say yes to the big things? i. School? Parents? ii. God wants all of life. iii. Can you expect to be obedient in India if you cant be obedient at home? b. Faith comes from a life of faithfulness.
