IMC-Overview  Set up in 1907  103 years old  IMC is a premier Chamber of trade, commerce & industry in India  Headquarters in Mumbai  Around 3200 direct members  Comprising a cross section of the business community-including Public & Pvt. Ltd companies  Over 225 affiliated member associations  Through which the Chamber reaches out to over 2,50,000 business establishments in the country  The first Chamber in the country to get ISO 9001:2000 accreditation in India.

IMC-Overview Three distinct phases1. (1907-1947) - A crucial role in the freedom struggle in the pre-independence era
- Pre-independence, IMC functioned as the nation's watchdog on the economic front, keeping vigil on the colonial masters' exploitative moves. - IMC's major contribution was in assuming the role of economist during the pre independence era.

IMC-Overview 2. (1947-1991) - A vital and an equally important role in the promotion of trade, commerce & industry in the planned economy in the post-independent era
During the hostile days for economic development, IMC laid the foundation -it speeded up industrialisation, -attainment of fiscal autonomy, -establishment of an Indian Mercantile Marine, -reservation of coastal trade for Indian shipping, -indianisation of administrative services and -training of Indian youths in industrial technology. It helped to establish institutions of business infrastructure such as Indian Mercantile Insurance company, Swadeshi Stores and Sydenham college of Commerce.

 Information Technology Cell  Information Technology industry is one of the fastest growing industries in the Indian Economy.  Indian Merchants' Chamber is serving the Information Technology industry since 1998 through its Information Technology Committee  The IMC-IT CELL seeks to carry on an informed debate leading to well-considered suggestions on issues concerning VISA, ITES/BPO, Education and Training, E-governance, Software piracy, Cyber laws, E-Commerce, Venture Capital, ISP, Hardware & Software, Mobile Communication, Entertainment, Electronic Data Interchange (EDI), and Information Technology Industry in general.

 Anti Corruption Cell

Indian Merchants Chamber has set up the following machinery for banishing corruption from the countrys body politic, by (a) interacting with members, (b) identifying issues, (c) studying, analyzing and developing responses; by (d) disseminating information to business groups on laws, rules, procedures, practices, rights and liabilities, & by carrying out propaganda on the need to battle corruption on a wide front : * An Anti-corruption Advisory Committee, with Mr Julio Ribeiro as Chairman.

 IMC Court of Arbitration  IMC provides unique services to its members and others alike for resolving all disputes and differences through its IMC Court of Arbitration & Conciliation  This Institutionalized Alternate Dispute Resolution Forum was started in the year 1985 & has been in the reckoning ever since.  With a view to assist the business community as well as individuals, the Institution has framed its own Rules of Arbitration and Conciliation.  The Awards passed under these Rules can be similarly executed like decrees passed by the Court. Till date, none of the awards passed by the IMC Court of Arbitration & Conciliation has been challenged.

 Certificate of Origin (COO)  COO is one useful document in Import-Export Trade as it indicates that the goods, which are being exported, are actually manufactured in a specific country mentioned therein.  This certificate is sent by the exporter to the importer & is useful for claiming special concession, if any, on the import duty charged.  It ensures that banned articles do not go to the importing country. Also, the certificate of origin ensures that the goods have not been re-shipped by the exporter after importing from some other country.

Uses of Certificate of Origin to the Importer:


 An importer gets quick delivery of goods from the customs authorities.  An importer can claim special concession as regards payment of tariff, if available.  An importer gets adequate proof about the origin of goods imported.

 Visa Recommendation Letter  Indian Merchants Chamber issues Visa Recommendation Letter to Exporters for Business purpose.  This facility can be availed only if the Company / Firm is a Member (Annual Subscriber of IMC)of the Merchants Chamber.  Indian Merchants Chamber charges Rs.200/- per Letter for Single person

CD-ROMs: -the Library has a growing collection of CD-ROMs on commercial topics.

 IMC-ERTF  The IMC Economic Research and Training Foundation (IMC-ERTF), the Research wing of the IMC, was established in 1959 to promote Applied Economic Research and Training.  ERTF facilitates effective interface between Government, Business, Trade and Industry through organization of seminars & special training programmes on emerging economic issues.

 With a view to promote holistic development of Trade, Commerce & Industry, the IMC-ERTF undertakes sponsored research, facilitates research & guides public policy on topics of public interest.
