POETIC JUSTICE CLIFF HANGER ***DREAM SEQUENCE: A dream sequence is a technique used in storytelling, particularly in television and film, to set apart a brief interlude from the main story.

Cliffhanger

Plot

The narrative ends unresolved, to draw the audience back to a future episode for the resolution.

Deus ex machina(a machination, or act Plot of god)

Resolving the primary conflict by a means unrelated to the story (e.g., a god appears and solves everything). This device dates back to ancient Greek theater, but can be a clumsy method that frustrates the audience.

Epiphany

A sudden revelation or insightusually with a symbolic role in the narrativein a literary work.

Flashback (or analeptic reference)

General term for altering time sequences, taking characters back to the beginning of the tale, for instance

Foreshadowing

Plot

Hinting at events to occur later. See also formal patterning, repetitive designation, and Chekhov's gun.

Narrative hook

Narrative Story opening that "hooks" readers' attention so they will keep reading hook

Plot twist

Unexpected change ("twist") in the direction or expected outcome of the

plot. See also twist ending.

Poetic justice

Virtue ultimately rewarded, or vice punished, by an ironic twist of fate related to the character's own conduct

Side story

Background narrative that explains the world of the main story. Examples include Mahabharata, Ramayana, Gundam, Doctor Who and The Matrix

-unexpected finale that gives an entirely new vision on the entire plot; a powerful ending that leaves the readers dissatisfied and frustrated - a series of dreams which allows a character to see events that occur or have occurred in another time - a happy ending where a virtue is rewarded and the vice punished - a premonition much like PROLEPSIS but only hints at the future - story opening that hooks the readers attention so they will keep reading - a plot device dating back to Ancient Greece where the conflict is resolved through a means ( by God, dues) that seem unrelated to -the story; it allows the author to end the story as desired without following the logic and continuity of -the story - sudden revelation of truth at a certain point of the story - background narrative that explains the world of the main story - abrupt ending that leaves the plot incomplete without denouement; it often leaves characters in a precarious or difficult situation which hint the possibility of a sequel - events previous to the current time frame are presented as characters memories and are used to explain their backgrounds and the back-story
