Heylo dear reader,

You hold in your hands the culmination of the labour of love of many who have contributed in one way or another to this publication that celebrates 30 years of Gods blessings upon the Calvary Pandan Youth Fellowship. As a part of the Youth Fellowship, the Uth Chronicle team has had the privilege of delving into the past to bring to remembrance all that God has done for this ministry. Generations of youths have benefited from the establishment of this fellowship group, and as you thumb through these pages and read the testimonies of both past and present YFers, we are confident you will be able to say with us that God has truly been faithful in preserving the Youth Fellowship, and allowing it to prosper. For those already within the Youth Fellowship, may this help you look back with thanksgiving on how God has blessed you personally through the sound teaching of His Word that we receive every Saturday, and the mutual comfort and encouragement we enjoy through fellowship with like-minded brethren. To all those who have not yet taken that step to join us, we pray that this publication will serve to encourage you to come and be partakers of the same blessing. Our celebration of this momentous occasion is built around the theme of Constantly Abiding, and while we thank God for His provision for the Youth Fellowship, it is also a time for us to reflect upon our own faithfulness, especially amidst these last days of apostasy and lukewarm devotion. Let us then strive to lead lives that are fully consecrated to Christ, looking to Him for the grace to do so, for he hath said, I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee (Heb 13:5b).

Be an example for the Lord

The first BP Youth Fellowship in 1954 started with seven members, at Life BP Church, Prinsep Street. We planted and watered, and the Lord gave the increase. That was almost sixty years ago. Through the years we have seen many changes, some for the better, some for the worse falling into apostasy. But our Lord remains the same, ever unchanging, faithful. We must follow in His steps. Youth is the time to begin serving the Lord in godly grouping and fellowship. Youth is also the time to stand up for God and for the testimony of our Lord Jesus Christ. To young Timothy, the apostle Paul wrote Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity (1 Timothy 4:12). Timothy rose to the challenge, took up the call. In his time, Martin Luther was a triumphant reformer at 25, John Calvin at 21 years. How old are you, YF reader? God used Timothy, Luther and Calvin, mightily He can use you too! Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example for the Lord!

The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil: he shall preserve thy soul. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in from this time forth, and even for evermore.
Psalm 121:7-8

It is an honour and privilege for us to be the batch of YFers that has the grand opportunity to commemorate CPYFs 30th Anniversary. As the Lord has been faithful to His servant David in time past, the Lords promise resonates with us today, preserving us youth, preserving us from evil that so easily besets us. As we look back at the past 30 years of Gods blessings, we cannot help but thank and praise God for the bountiful mercies He has showered upon us. 30 years of spiritual feeding, 30 years of serving the Lord. Just as our past generations of YFers have gone through the ranks of the YF and have proceeded to other services in church and grown into fruitful and mature Christians, our aim is to continue to nurture young men and women to become strong Christians, steadfast in faith, and zealous in service.

As you read through this publication, it is my prayer that you will be much blessed and heartened by the witness of both YFers and ex-YFers, and be able to join us in our rejoicing and praise to our Lord for His grace and mercies upon us all these years. While we take this time to reflect on the past goodness of God in our lives, we covet your prayers as we continue to serve our Lord together in His church. May we all continue to have an earnest desire to live a life that is in accordance to our YF motto To Know Christ, and to Make Him Known, all the days of our lives.

Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me. I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.
John 15:4-5
Some churches do not have Fellowship Groups. They believe that the Bible says nothing about Fellowship Groups in the local church and therefore they do not need them. This argument is fallacious, as the Bible also did not say anything about worshipping in air-conditioned sanctuaries or wearing a suit for preaching, and many other things that Christians do during worship. However, many churches do have Fellowship Groups. These Fellowship Groups can be either blessing, or gaps in the church for evil work if they are not carefully monitored and guarded. Fellowship Groups are grouped according to age or gender. This facilitates ease in dealing with common issues. Fellowship Groups are to be blessings and to aid the spiritual growth of believers in accordance with the Great Commission given by our Lord in Matthew 28:18-20. The focus is always Christ and not

Abiding in Christ

Foreword

man. Every item in Fellowship Groups has to be Christ-centred according to the Holy Scriptures. The unstated question in deciding the programmes for the fellowship is this: how will this activity or programme help the group grow in Christ? We need not confine activities to only Prayer Meetings and Bible Studies. As long as the activities are not sinful or compromising, they are acceptable. The key is to plan programmes that will help members abide in Christ. For example, the young people might plan an outing at the beach or a soccer game at the park for Christian bonding and getting to know one another better. The Ladies Group might plan to have a cooking or baking session to enhance Christian fellowship. The children might plan a kite-flying activity where parents with their children can have fellowship and spend time together. These healthy activities complement Prayer Meetings and Bible Studies but must never replace them. These Fellowship Groups are part of the local church and are NOT a miniature local church. They must be well cared for, for the nurturing of the believers. Enemies can easily creep into these Fellowship Groups and turn them into

windows for the Evil One to sow seeds of discord and false doctrines. Many churches have fallen because inroads were made by the Evil One through these Fellowship Groups to destroy churches. Session members must oversee these Fellowship Groups for the purpose of accountability, to supervise their progress, care, and protection, as a mother hen watches over her chicks. The pastor is the exofficio of all the Fellowship Groups to ensure that they function with right and biblical doctrines, and in an orderly manner. The purpose of Fellowship Groups is to ensure that believers truly abide in Christ. If they do not, then all is vanity. Perfect attendance and service in the committees are futile to sinners who are not part of Christ. Without Christ, we can do nothing! The Fellowship Groups must help believers grow in the grace and knowledge of the LORD Jesus Christ. This is the measure of a spiritual fellowship! The transformation in the lives of the people who are part of these groups is supernatural. It is the work of God Almighty. To abide in Christ is to grow in the LORD! AMEN.

Each time the Mandarin Youth Fellowship (QNTQ) gathers for fellowship, we know that someone up there is praying for us. Not one, not two but a whole fellowship group which gathers in the room above ours! For this we give thanks to the Lord for it was Him who single-handedly raised the CPYF and preserved it all these years. Their mere presence, week after week, is indeed a form of encouragement to the QNTQ for we are often reminded that there are like-minded youths in this church and the spiritual battle we fight these last days is not a lonely one. The YF starts half an hour before the QNTQ. As such, their songs of praise can be clearly heard by those of us who are early. Praise the Lord for who would have thought of a better way than this to prepare our hearts before our fellowship begins? Thank God for watching over the YF these 30 years, and truly making you a channel of blessings unto many of us. The 2009 December YF camp is just one of the many examples of how members of QNTQ have been truly blessed by this ministry. Through the 6-day camp in Mersing, many of our

members who attended that camp were immersed in the sweet fellowship with fellow youths from YF. It was a truly memorable camp for many of us and by Gods grace the friendship forged through the camp remains even till today. What left us truly in awe at how the Lord has blessed us through the YF camp is the spiritual revival that fateful camp has brought to QNTQ. Many were moved by the Holy Spirit through the sermons based on the topic Is Your All On The Altar and have been fervently serving the Lord upon their return from the camp up till now! Wherefore we give thanks to God always for you all, making mention of you in our prayers (I Thessalonians 1:2) May the Lord continue to watch over this ministry, that each succeeding generation will remain stedfast and faithful unto the Lord. May His manifold blessings continue to abound in you until the day of His return!

Parents Day 2010

The CPAF rejoices with you on the joyous occasion of your 30th anniversary. We thank God for His faithfulness and goodness in sustaining and blessing the Youth Fellowship over the last three decades. The YF and AF are closely linked. Over the last 30 years, some of your members have graduated to become YAF, and then AF members, while others have gone on to serve in other ministries of the Church. Some of our members children are members of the Youth Fellowship. We continue to pray that the Youth Fellowship will continue its good work among the youths both within and

outside of Church that each YF member will strive to know Christ, to serve Him and to make Him known. Looking ahead, we look forward in receiving your members as members of AF in due time! Meanwhile, my brethren, be ye steadfast, unmoveable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, forasmuch as ye know that your labour is not in vain in the Lord (1Cor 15:58). May the grace and blessing of God be upon YF for the years ahead till Christ return. In Christs Precious & Blessed Name, Calvary Pandan Adults Fellowship

Important Partnership Of Youth Fellowship with Junior Worship

The Calvary Pandan Youth Fellowship has played an important role working closely with the Junior Worship department in achieving many spiritual goals. For this, we at JW are immensely grateful. Thank you for your unstinting support. It is great to work together to further Gods kingdom. For the past 30 years, but particularly in the last 10 years, we have teachers in the JW who are YFers themselves. These have usually grown up within the church since their childhood. They have co-laboured with us well, teaching and nurturing the children faithfully in Sunday school. Some of you have also served as musicians and singspiration leaders, again making a vital contribution. There are others who have used their Godgiven talents in other areas e.g. decorating the J.W. notice boards and taking special ad-hoc roles during special occasions. YFers play a significant role during the two most important events in the JW calendar: the Vacation Bible School (VBS) and JW Camp.

This is especially noticeable during the last 5-10 years as more children enrolled for VBS. Without you, it will be almost impossible to run a successful VBS programme to cater to so many children (more than 200) which the Lord has blessed us with. We remember the hard work of those who served in the VBS Committee, Bus Ministry, as Games Leaders, Teachers/Helpers and musicians. At every JW Camp, again the labour of love of those of you who helped out is greatly appreciated. Together we worked to bring the glorious gospel of Christ to the children as well as helping them to grow in Christ. Truly all of us are reminded to lift up our hearts to praise the Lord for the body of Christ working harmoniously as God intended (Psalm 133). Happy blessed 30th Anniversary! Striving together for the gospel in these end times,

Dear Calvary Pandan YF,

We thank God that we can rejoice with you on your 30th anniversary. It is a testimony of Gods faithfulness in keeping this ministry through these three decades. We thank God for the common bond we have in the Lord Jesus Christ in the proclamation of the Gospel and in the defence of the perfectly inspired and preserved Bible. As we persevere in love and good works, let us not forget the humility of our Lord Jesus Christ. The Lord says in Luke 22:27b, I am among you as he that serveth. Let us take this opportunity to examine ourselves if we have served others humbly as our Lord Jesus Christ did. Have we in lowliness of mind esteemed others better than ourselves? Have we parted ways with the desire of mens vain applause, the empty pleasures of the world, and our fond ambitions that we may avail ourselves for the Kings service? Let us remember to serve one another in Christs humility as we grow in the grace of God. May we also grow in the love of God and His Word in these last days, for the blessings, unity, joy and peace of the fellowship and the Church. Lovingly in Christ, Young Peoples Fellowship True Life BPC

CPYF 30th Anniversary Magazine

Dear CPYF,
Warmest greetings in the name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ! We rejoice with you on this blessed occasion of the 30th Anniversary of the CPYF. It is heartening to see the Lords goodness, mercy and grace upon the CPYF year after year. Thirty years have passed, and we rejoice to see and hear of the many souls saved and blessed by your ministry. We thank God for how your YF has been a constant example for ours to follow, and we truly appreciate the kind counsel and advice which we have received from your leaders, especially so in our infant years. We thank God too, for the times when we have been able to have activities together: the weekly meetings at the Sunset Gospel Bible Fellowship, our own combined meetings, the Combined Youth Conference, the Fundamental Christian Ministry, and many other occasions where your youths have been a source of blessed Christian friendship and encouragement. God willing, may the days ahead of us be filled with such blessed occasions and more! The youth ministry is certainly a difficult one, especially so in these last days, as the world marches on its dark path of sin and destruction. May we all continue to stand together in such perilous times, faithful till the day our Master returns for us. But ye beloved, building up yourselves on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Ghost, keep yourselves in the love of God, looking for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ unto eternal life. Jude 20,21 God bless!

But no matter what journey our Lord has planned for us, Christians need the fellowship of others with minds and hearts focused on Christ.

A Note from Our Counsellor

In 1929, Anne May Sebring Murphy lost her husband. Then, she lost their pottery business and wealth. So, she packed her bags and moved from Ohio to live with her sister in California. She died in 1942 at the age of 64. Little else is written about this woman who penned the beautiful lyrics in Constantly Abiding. I surmised that the hymn was a personal testimony to the endurance of hardship resulting from her husbands death. Yet, together with her sister, she found peace the peace that surpasses all human understanding (Philippians 4:7). They also felt the constant abiding of the Holy Spirit, the Comforter whom Christ promised to all believers to abide with them forever till He takes them to their heavenly home on that glorious day.

20

CPYF 30th Anniversary Magazine

Living our sojourn on earth has its trials and tribulations; some similar, less or more painful than what Murphy had to endure. But no matter what journey our Lord has planned for us, Christians need the fellowship of others with minds and hearts focused on Christ. This is something that the New Testament constantly emphasizes. Christ said, This is my commandment, that ye love one another, as I have loved you ( John 15:12). Such love manifests itself, not only in supporting others during their trials, difficulties and weaknesses, but also in edifying and encouraging each other to do what is godly. In this way, we share our burdens. Further, Paul reminds us that the church is one body in Christ. Yet, like the human body, each part is dependent upon others. When we fellowship with one another at church services and various ministries, we develop the fruit of Gods Spirit love, joy, peace, longsuffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness and self-control (Galatians 5:22-23).

Calvary Pandan Youth Fellowship is 30 years young and the clarion call to all members is to constantly abide together in Christ. And there has never been a time in our calling when we need to excite one another for the work of God more than now. We need to be motivated to stand tall in the Word of God. We ought to have great love for Gods laws and each other. We should not stay away from our meetings as some do; but rather, encourage one another to come and serve together, because we see the day of the Lord drawing near. May our Lord continue to bless the Youth Fellowship with more young people who abides His will and serves Him ever faithfully.

Thank God For YF!

Greetings to all in the blessed name of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. When I was approached to contribute an article titled Retrospect, I was quite apprehensive. Firstly, it is for our CPYF 30th Anniversary Publication. That would mean a wider target audience, and not only for internal, but external circulation too. Secondly, my memories of events of two to three decades ago are rather dim and faint! I know some of you have started to extrapolate my age. Thirdly, the difficulties to clearly narrate and relate these events, and put them into the right perspectives for all of you, CPYFers! Ok, lets begin this personal letter to my beloved Calvary Pandan YFers, for the testimony and glory of our Lord Jesus Christ. (A) Calvary Junior Fellow ( JF, 1974-1977) A larger portion of my letter will focus on my spiritual formative years in YF, both in Jurong and Pandan. I attended Calvary Jurong in late 1974 and accepted the Lord as my Saviour in 1975. This is the gospel debt I owe to my God. The first few years in church were spent in the JF, led and supervised by adult teachers. I really thank God for these teachers, who have taken time to care and nurture us in the fundamental doctrines of the faith. They have sacrificed many hours every Saturday evening to spend time with us, minister from the Word of God, help us with Bible verse memorisation, teach new songs, introduce games, etc. The teachers helped us develop leadership skills: chairing meetings, leading in prayer, song leading, room arrangements, duty planning, etc. For these, I thank God for bringing them into my life. It is never too early to learn and be trained for the Lords ministry. (B) Calvary Youth Fellowship (CYF, 1978-1981) When I was in JF, I used to look up to the older brothers and sisters. Their meeting was held weekly too. JF was in the 3rd level studio and YF was in 2nd level classroom. Sometimes, I would peek into the classroom to see what was going on inside. Oh, what amazed me was the lively singing, and the joyous expressions they had during singspiration. I wanted to be like them when

26

CPYF 30th Anniversary Magazine

I grow up! Before I realized it, I was already a true blue YFer. It was an easy transition for me, as my elder brother had prepared the path for me. His church friends were also my friends, so it was pretty easy to mix and fellowship with them at YF. Yes, YF singing was so lively and spontaneous. Messages were very apt, and catered to our age group. I recall vividly that our gathering did not just end with the YF meeting. We continued to stay back in the church for more fellowship, till the church caretaker literally chased us out of church when it was too late. Most of us were living nearby, and we accompanied each other home more fellowship! At YF, I got interested in learning to play the guitar. I thought to myself, How nice it would be, if I could learn quickly and play for YF. That was my drive and determination. I took every opportunity to learn alongside my elder brother and friend. I learnt my first song Burdens are lifted at Calvary. Ah, I started on a wrong path. It was played in D-chords, and 3/4 time signature! You will know what I mean if you are a guitarist. Nevertheless, that did not deter me, and soon, I thank God I could play all the songs in the YF songbook, by His grace, and for His glory :) Some of us were given opportunities to serve as guitarists

in JW, and we enjoyed singing with the little ones. So, why not serve Him with your musical talent? The older ones soon moved up to Adults Fellowship, and we started to take on leadership roles. I have never led any group before, as I was always in my elder brothers shadow. Now was the time to step up and lead! I thought it was an easy task to be a group leader. Soon, I realized being a leader is not easy. It did not just include planning group activities, and building group dynamics. The more important role was nurturing group members to a higher level of Christian maturity as a youth. I had failed in this aspect, and it was a painful experience, and lingered on for many years. The Lord was gracious and reminded me in 2 Cor 12:9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me. Hope this will comfort and bring strength to those who are weary, and discouraged in service, and feel like throwing in the towel. Think again.

(C) Calvary Pandan Youth Fellowship (CPYF, 1979-1991, 2002 to present) In 1979, a few months after the church commenced its first service, some young people wanted a ministry to cater to their needs. That gave birth to the Pandan Youth Bible Club. It was started by some of our youths who moved out of Calvary YF ( Jurong) to start this Bible Club. The Lord laid the burden on these youths to move out of their comfort zone, to start a new youth ministry in the infant church. In 1980, the group decided to change the name to Calvary Pandan Youth Fellowship, in line with the type of activities found in a fellowship. It was then that an elder in Pandan approached me to consider serving in the infant CPYF ministry. I was still serving in CYF Exco then. So I asked the elder to give me about 1-2 years, trusting in the Lords guidance and provision. For two years, I was shuttling between CYF and CPYF. In 1981, I made up my mind and moved out of the comfort zone of Calvary Jurong to Calvary Pandan. By this time, I was already quite integrated into CPYF and I thank God for the opportunity to serve in the Exco. The years of studying the Word of God, building and developing Christian friendship, planning

youth activities and serving the Lord together as youths, were most delightful, enjoyable and memorable. I reluctantly moved out of YF at the age of 28, even though I was long expired in YF terminology a few years earlier! Our fellowship room was on the third level, the one we usually use for current CPYF Exco meetings. The YF room was cooled by a fan as there was no aircon then! We enjoyed the warm fellowship though, with average weekly attendance at 20. Every one of us looked forward to the regular Sat YF

meetings, and would stay back for more fellowship over dinner, till we were chased out of the church premises at about 9.30pm by the church warden. This still exists today! :) The small number in attendance was a great advantage. It provided the ease of organising of outdoor group activities, even at last minutes notice. There were neither computers nor mobile phones then, but we still managed to communicate well! Our YF programs included visitations - lots and lots of them, outings, camps, retreats, mission trips, Bible studies. Combined YF meetings with other BP YFs were meetings we all looked forward to. Some of the friends made then remain today and we praise God for the bond we have in Christ. YF today is much more blessed, with an additional avenue to meet other BP

youths through the FCM. Are you in FCM, and if not, why not? Serving the Lord during my youth were the most blessed. Besides being an Exco member, there were other areas of service in the church, eg. JW, PA team, ushers, greeters, choir, kitchen duties, arranging hymnals, arranging the fellowship hall tables/chairs, folding weekly bulletins, clearing/washing Lords supper cups, etc. I recall that on many occasions, the YF would volunteer to spring-clean the whole church, and it was truly a great joy to see numbers gathered on a Saturday to clean the house of God! In my opinion, youths have the most available time at their disposal, and why not use for the glory of God? The recent involvement of many of you during the 60th BP anniversary celebrations on 24th Oct 2010 reminded me of the 10th Assembly of the FECCC Conference held in Singapore in 1981. Calvary Pandan was given the privilege and honour of hosting that exciting and memorable event. We had delegates from all over the world. YF was one of the ministries that provided the logistics support. It was a great time for all of us to mingle with the foreign delegates. As the event coincided with the school holidays, we spent the whole

Testimonies

29

week in church, helping out, and listening to the messages and addresses. The main stage was set up in front of the church office, and participants were seated all over the green turf. There was no middle staircase back then, so the whole turf was filled, all the way to the fellowship hall. The corridors on level 2 were filled with people too. Many of the rooms on 2nd and 3rd levels were converted to house the delegates. I learnt many new songs from the Filipino singing group which called themselves The Old-Fashioned Singers, deriving their name from these two songs: The Old-Fashioned Meeting and The OldFashioned Way. Today, we still sing the songs introduced by them, like Why have you chosen me and The Longer I serve Him. The words of the song kept reminding me of my service for the Lord: The longer I serve Him the sweeter He grows, The more that I love Him more love He bestows: Each day is like heaven, my heart overflows, The longer I serve Him the sweeter He grows.

Every need He is supplying, Plenteous grace He bestows; Every day my way gets brighter, The longer I serve Him the sweeter He grows. Today, I thank my God for the wonderful years co-labouring with you as the YF Advisor. I count it a special privilege to repay my Lord the gospel debt I owe, serving in YF. The years spent as a youth in both CYF and CPYF were by far the most memorable period of my Christian life. All of us were spiritually nourished by the Word of God, and we encouraged each other to serve both within and without YF. Dearly beloved YFer, what is holding you back from serving the Lord? Do not procrastinate and think you have many years ahead of your youth days to serve the Lord. Do consider giving back part of your available time as a living sacrifice the One who gave Himself for us. It is very heartening to see many actively serving in different capacities in the church and may the Lord find us faithful till He returns.

Hallmarks of a Good Youth Fellowship

I came to know the Lord personally in my youth. It was not obvious to me then, but it was crucial for me that the Lord should lead me to a ministry or fellowship group where I can grow as a young Christian. This He did, and I always thank the Lord for those few but foundational years that set my sight firmly on Him and made my heart ready for His work. Let me share with you some lessons which I thought were important hallmarks of a good Youth Fellowship. A good YF is a ministry where God is honoured and His Word held in the highest regard. The Bible is central in all matters of the life and conduct of His children, especially the young ones. As such, this ministry will be very careful to nurture all in their fold in the truths of the Bible. This would also be a ministry where we are provoked to grow spiritually with fellow believers of the same age group. It is a place where we learn from those who are spiritually more mature than us; where we learn to sharpen one another in the faith; where we exercise our spiritual gifts and learn to lead younger ones by our examples. Thank God for the Youth Fellowship of our Church. Keep up the good work for our Lord.

Dear YFers
To know Christ and to make Him Known This was and has been YFs motto all these years. On reflection, it is a good theme to have, especially through our youth. This is true as many of us may be saved in our teenage years and after our salvation, we need to know Christ to pursue Christ. To grow in Christ and gain more knowledge in His Word so that it would be our anchor through the busy working years ahead. After knowing Christ, we can share this knowledge with others by telling them the good news that would save their souls.

My YF years were blessed ones. They involved reading Gods Word, memorising verses, researching and understanding doctrines, tracting, mission trips and not forgetting fellowship and friendships. They were busy, useful and happy years for the LORD. May YF continue to abound and your YF years the best years to know Christ and to make Him known. Happy and blessed 30th Anniversary!

During a recent YAF meeting, the speaker mentioned that perhaps 80% of young people who grow up in church leave the church for one reason or another. Chee Meng turned to me and gave me a knowing look. As I scrolled through my memory, I realised that the percentage might not have been that high but it was significant. Ask any of the older YFers and they would be able to recount young men and women like yourselves who have grown up in church, perhaps gone overseas, or just drifted away due to work or family commitments. I have been very blessed to be part of the YF and have made many strong friendships in YF. People like Chee Meng, Adrian and Dn James grew up with me, and we eventually transited to YAF.

In YF, my friends were there with me throughout the key phases in my life like O levels, Polytechnic and National Service. For that, Im grateful. Ruth has been blessed too with many of you saying a friendly hi or just introducing yourselves. To our dear brothers and sisters in YF, forge close friendships, keep close to God despite what the world will tell or tempt you. We hope to continue to see you in church and share with you our stories.

As the old adage goes youth is a blunder, manhood a struggle, old age a regret. Its hard to disagree with such wisdom, and true to the saying, Ive had my share of youthful blunders as much as struggles in my current phase of manhood. Coming to YF however was not a blunder; in fact, it was one of the best choices that I have made. About 15 years ago, back when the Teens Department was correctly spelt in contrast to todays Teenz, myself and 2 other friends, Stanley Tan and Grace Yong made an agreement to come together for YF. We found the people to be warm, the fellowship sweet, and the spiritual food meaty. Ever since then, YF has been a regular feature on my calendar every Saturday evening till I transited to

YAF. To be completely honest, much of how I think, what I know and what I am is owing to the spiritual influence and guidance of older brothers and sisters back in YF. Who else better to guide you through the portals of junior college, the rite of passage of National Service, the complexities of BGR than fellow youths who have had the benefit of hindsight and are equipped with the wisdom to give sound, godly advice? YF is now 30 and it is my hope and prayer that it will continue to be a fountain of blessing to all who walk through its portals.

It was at one of the YF camps where I came to know the Lord. The camp theme on Revelations made me seriously ponder whether I would be left behind when Jesus returns again despite all the years I had spent in church. It was through the YF that I slowly began to understand deeper doctrines the resurrection of Christ, the Trinity, the second coming of Christ, etc. I learnt proper Christian conduct from observing and learning from spiritually mature brothers and sisters. I learnt why it was necessary to keep a good testimony for Christ. I learnt how to pray. I learnt the meaning of keeping my personal quiet time with the Lord. At YF, each was his brothers keeper. On several occasions, I was lovingly rebuked for inappropriate conduct. I thank God for caring brethren who are concerned for my spiritual well-being. Encouragement cards were little pick-me-ups whenever I was going through a

difficult phase in life. Every little thing which the YF provided helped keep me in the strait and narrow path. The army phase of my life was probably the most difficult time of my life. If not for the prayers and encouragement of my fellow YFers, I would have easily been a different person today someone who is only concerned about living a care-free life. I do live a care-free life now a life made free by the truth of Gods Word. I thank God for allowing me to experience the full spiritual impact that a fellowship with like-minded brethren can offer. The YF was not only where I took my first steps as an unblinded believer, but also where I learnt to walk after the Spirit.

My Bloo

41

Hello everyone
In this article Im going to talk about two things. The first being why I started to come for YF again, and the second being what I appreciate most about the YF. To answer the first question, Id first have to say that the last time I attended YF with some semblance of regularity was in 2004. Since then, the Lord has called me elsewhere (CTYF, and later on, Sydney), but CPYF has always felt as if it was my YF: The YF that I grew up in, the YF where my friends are (though not for long more), the place where the opportunities to serve were most abundant, the place where I learnt the most from a doctrinal and theological standpoint. Even as I write and reflect on this, I now realise that CPYF has played a very important role in my spiritual life, and in my formative years as a Christian. Having realised all these things now, I cannot really answer the question of why I didnt come to YF earlier this year while finishing National Service! However, I am glad for the few months where I did. There is really no single compelling reason that I can write about here to explain how I was found in the new sanctuary cryroom every Saturday evening in the months July through to September. There is no argument I could present to say, my fellow Bloos, which would win anyone over to immediately start attending YF again. For YFers who have gone overseas to study for extended periods of time, there is sometimes this phenomenon of feeling as if the place we left isnt the same, that we dont fit in anymore. In this case I feel the best thing to do is to persevere and just attend! Just go to church, just make good use of your time for the Lord, just learn more about your Saviour who died on the cross for you, just learn how to live a holy life for His sake! The onus is not just on the Bloo though. I

found that the constant follow-up (not to mention the weekly bible verse smses) from my group leader played a part in me coming back to YF. In this case peer pressure can be a good thing, and if you ask someone you know who should be attending YF but isnt, you may just find him sitting behind you at the next meeting. It only takes being faithful in the small things, in attending the meetings, and in encouraging others to do the same, for lives to be blessed.

I did have a very blessed time attending YF again, and Ive even picked up a few practical tips that Ive found quite beneficial. For instance, ever since the messages on prayer, Ive started praying more for others, and also asking others to pray for me. If I were to talk about what I appreciate most in the YF, well, if youve made it this far into the article you can see that there are many things I do appreciate. The one thing that stood out for me this time round was the few discussions we had after the messages. I felt that the group always dug deep into the questions, and that there was no shortage of good answers and godly opinions. When it came to sharing, people shared from their hearts with no objective but to edify. I was really very blessed to have been a part of all of it. On that note, I shall conclude, hoping that this article may spur its readers to make the most out of their YF for Christ. CPYF has played such an important role to so many lives in its thirty years, and with Gods help, I know it will continue to do the same for many more to come.

Dear Jonathan
Words cant describe the joy I have in seeing you attend your first YF meeting on the 19th of January 2005. While the first step is always the hardest and I know that your mom had to fetch you to YF to encourage you to attend (you are truly a shao ye), I would like to encourage you with this verse, O taste and see that the Lord is good: blessed is the man that trusteth in him. Psalms 34:8 Allowing YF to be a part of you is truly one of the greatest milestones in your life. It is here where you will be able to grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. It is here where you will learn how to earnestly seek the Lord in prayer. It is here where you will meet Christian friends whom you would grow to love and to cherish (and possibly take a liking to one of them). Perhaps at that stage of your life, there will be many moments when tears of joy will fill your heart and soul as you continue to have a closer walk with Christ. However, there are times when these tears of joy may be replaced by tears of sorrow. I wont lie to you; it will hurt. When moments like these come, look not unto men, but remember these three verses,

Hear my cry, O God; attend unto my prayer. From the end of the earth will I cry unto thee, when my heart is overwhelmed: lead me to the rock that is higher than I. For thou hast been a shelter for me, and a strong tower from the enemy. Psalm 61:1-3 And as you continue to be a part of YF, there will be many opportunities to serve the Lord, whether small or big roles. Please dont rely on your own strengths. Instead, lean entirely upon God and draw strength from this trusty pillar of support. In addition, never be complacent in any area of service and remember that while starting well is good, ending well is better. Whenever you are unsure about any of area of your service, go back to this verse, But watch thou in all things, endure afflictions, do the work of an evangelist, make full proof of thy ministry. 2 Timothy 4:5. I am very glad that you have taken this first step. Truly, it is by the grace of God.

Dear me

How have you been spending your Saturday evenings? Its weird that youre not going for YF, especially since you had been attending Teenz so faithfully. Now that you have graduated from Teenz, why arent you moving up and going for YF? Is it because you are lazy? Teenz is on Sunday afternoons, right after morning worship service, so it is easier and more convenient for you to follow your parents to and fro church. Now that YF is on Saturday afternoons, it is definitely harder and more troublesome for you to get to church and back home. Do not let this be a factor in preventing you from coming for YF! Should not your love for Gods Word and the fellowship with like-minded brethren have enough pull to overcome your laziness in coming for YF? How long wilt thou sleep, O sluggard? when wilt thou arise out of thy sleep? Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth, and thy want as an armed man. Prov 6:9-11 Is it because you feel like you do not fit in?

You have been quite a loner, even when you were in Teenz. You do not like to step out of your comfort zone, and you pretty much like to keep to yourself. But God has reminded us not to forsake the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but to exhort one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching (Heb 10:25). While I cannot say for sure that you will immediately warm up to the people in YF and they to you, I can assure you that they do try to extend their right hand of fellowship as much as they can! Fellowship takes both hands to clap. I know they are more than willing to make that effort, but how about you? Despite the demeanor of some, they are actually very friendly people! Are you afraid that we may not have common topics to talk about? How can that be, if I may borrow words from a popular YF song - when we have a common love for each other, a common gift to the Saviour, a common bond holding us to the Lord, a common strength when we are weary, a common hope for tomorrow and a common joy in the truth of Gods Word? Or do you feel like you have other things that

46

CPYF 30th Anniversary Magazine

require your attention more than YF? I know sometimes you have homework to finish, but then it should not take up every Saturday. If it does, then you ought to re-evaluate your priorities, and manage your time accordingly. You could play fewer computer games, or spend less time on the television. We are to set our affection on things above, not on things on the earth! (Col 3:2) And Matt 6:19-21 reminds us, Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through and steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also. What do you place first in your life - heavenly things or earthly things? That being said, do not start neglecting your studies for YF, for we are also called to be good Christian students; to bear a good testimony even in our schools. The point here is to pray for the ability to set your priorities right and manage your time wisely for the right things, for to every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven (Ecc 3:1).

YFs age limit is 25. Time and tide wait for no man, and definitely not for you. You may be young now, but one day you will look back and regret not cherishing the opportunities you currently have to come for YF. They say that it is common to only cherish things when they are gone. But the Bible says, See then ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Eph 5:15-16. Remember now thy Creator in the days of thy youth, while the evil days come not, nor the years draw nigh, when thou shalt say, I have no pleasure in them; Eccl 12:1. Will you only start thinking about only when it is too late? I pray and hope that the Lord will move your heart to come for YF. There are many precious lessons from Gods Word to uncover, and many friendships to be made with fellow brothers and sisters. Will you come to YF this Saturday? Hope to see you there! Dear Brian

I write to you now with the benefit of hindsight, having experienced four blessed years in the Youth Fellowship. And I write to you knowing full well the reasons that have prevented you from attending it or any other fellowship group earlier. It is my dearest wish that you will not throw these words aside, hard though some of them may be, but come to realise that there is a huge void in your life that nothing but God can fill. I am sure that you already know some of this to be true, even if you dont act on it. How much time have you spent on games and books and writing, trying to find some sense of fulfilment? Your Saturdays are all virtually spent completing endless quests in things like World of Warcraft, and the in-between hours are spent daydreaming about books and other worlds. And yet after all that, you feel incomplete. Dissatisfied. There is always something more to reach for, another goal to achieve, another book to read. And by now you should begin to feel the futility of it all. Ecclesiastes 12:8 reads, Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity. You need only look into your heart to know that the sense of fulfilment in playing games, writing stories

and adding books to your shelves is a fleeting one that has no meaning in eternity. Which is why you attend church on Sundays. Its a start, but what use is it when all that means is that you are a Sunday Christian, a pew-warmer who comes and goes with the first and last hymn? Thanks to the sound preaching, you may know the doctrines, you may know the dos and donts, but what use is all that head knowledge if you live a life that is separate from fellow believers? And what does it say about you when a breakdown of how you spend your time shows that you value the things of the world more than the things of God? You know the verse Romans 12:1, I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service. You claim to be of Christ have you done what is said in the verse? Your life consists of more than just Sunday. Spending two hours in church and then running back to the computer at home is no way to present your body as a living sacrifice.

Which is what it all boils down to an unwillingness to surrender. It is the reason you have rejected the invitations extended by Joyce to attend the Teens week after week, for almost a year. It is the reason you have not committed any time beyond Sunday to seeking the Lord. It is the reason why you cant bring yourself to set aside time on Saturdays to attend the Youth Fellowship now that you are of age. Everything else you hide behind your introversion, the fact that you dont know anyone, the fear of not being able to relate with anyone is just an excuse. Because if you were truly willing to surrender, if you truly have your eyes on Christ alone, all these fears would be easily surmounted. The bond that Christians have in the blood of Jesus is stronger than any earthly connection. That is exactly why it is needful for you to be a part of a fellowship group fellowship itself. I dont need to tell you how miserably difficult it is to walk alone without others to encourage you in the faith; you know it already from your many failures. You will always strive with the unwillingness to surrender to Christ in many aspects of your life, and without fellow saints to encourage and rebuke you when necessary, you will

succumb more easily. You may think that youll do just fine alone, but that is pride speaking. Ecclesiastes 4:9-10, 12 reads, Two are better than one; because they have a good reward for their labour. For if they fall, the one will lift up his fellow: but woe to him that is alone when he falleth; for he hath not another to help him up. And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken. So if youre serious about your walk with God, this is the first step to ensure that you grow as a Christian be found in a fellowship group. In a fellowship group you can enjoy mutual encouragement in the Lord and find areas of service to spend your time profitably, instead of wasting your hours and energy on futile pursuits. Youll find that you can be of use to the Lord and His people, and I cannot fully phrase how blessed it is to have fellowship with like-minded brethren. You will have to taste it yourself. There is nowhere else on earth outside the church where you can find this relationship. You know from experience how friends in school and online cannot help but change and drift apart. You know how familial ties, however strong, can still break down. You know how hollow platitudes and words

of comfort like Lifes like that and Carpe Diem give no hope or purpose. In Christ, however, Christians of varied backgrounds with differing interests can come together and worship the same God, can speak of spiritual things, can offer real words of comfort and direction from Scripture. And just as others can help you grow, one day with Gods enabling you will be able to be of use as well, to be a blessing to fellow believers. Proverbs 27:17 reads, Iron sharpeneth iron; so a man sharpeneth the countenance of his friend. And if you dont make that decision now, you will come to regret it in time, just as I now regret not having spent my Secondary school years in Teens. Dont waste this opportunity to receive blessings from God, and to be a blessing to others. Psalm 133:1, Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! So take that step, and behold for yourself the truth of the Psalmists words. Yours in Christ,

Hebrews 10:23-25

Let us hold fast the profession of our faith without wavering; (for he is faithful that promised;) And let us consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works: Not forsaking the assembling of ourselves together, as the manner of some is; but exhorting one another: and so much the more, as ye see the day approaching.

Dear Su Ling
I will be straightforward in telling you why this letter is written. Yes, I hope it serves as an encouragement and rebuke to you, to set aside time to attend YF. After looking at the verses, dont you feel very much blessed to have such a faithful and good God who keeps all His promises? However, at that same time, dont you feel rebuked that you have not been fully living up to the commandment of God that we forsake not the assembling of ourselves together? In the next verse, the Word of God says consider one another to provoke unto love and to good works. Apostle Paul tells you in Philippians 2:4 Look not every man

on his own things, but every man also on the things of others BUT have you been doing so? Or are you too caught up with your school work to care about the things of others? ): How do you actually encourage others or be encouraged when you do not attend fellowship meetings? Rev Quek once said in a sermon that to be partakers of one anothers grace is to be our brothers keepers. We have a common grace in the Lord Jesus Christ and when we shut the door and do not allow others to help us, it hurts the Lord deeply. Dont do this! Dont

shy away from attending these fellowship groups because of all the excuses that you can come up with. The very first stumbling block that stops you from attending YF is the fear of loneliness yeah? Well, at least it was the reason why I didnt like going to YF then. I didnt grow up in church neither did I know anybody except Wanping when I first came. Attending YF was such a struggle then. Everyone had their own group of friends and I felt the loneliest. Therefore, as much as I could, in my folly, I would find all sorts of excuses not to attend

fellowship meetings especially when Wanping could not make it. Guess I didnt love God enough to be able to place my love for Him above all these insignificant things. Yes, I do agree that the cry room is really BIG and that I cannot expect all the big korkors and jiejies to be entertaining me all the time in order to welcome me into YF. At the same time, you need to take some initiative to integrate yourself into the big family. It neither takes a lot nor is it really that difficult, for we have the common bond in our Lord Jesus Christ.

YF Outing 2010

Like what Elvin once told me, if you would commit yourself to God, to attend YF for at least 4 weeks, to take part in the fellowship activities, to stay for discussions, for dinners, to serve the Lord together etc; slowly, you will realise that there is abundant joy in attending YF! When you first find much joy in the Lord, you will find much joy in the things around you, in the friends that God has placed in your life. Yeahyeahyeah! That is why Christ tells us to seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his

righteousness; (Matthew 6:33)! If you are not willing to take the first step, to take the initiative to come for YF then how can the people around you ever get to know you? Dear Su Ling, I understand that taking the first step is not an easy task but I do pray you will find much courage in the Lord and come to experience the blessings from this ministry which God has faithfully sustained over the past 30 years!! Wow, so long! :D The second reason is I have got no time!! That is right, when do we ever find that we

have enough time? When I was in Primary 6, PSLE was everything. When I was in Secondary Four, O levels was everything. And when I was in JC2, A levels was everything. Now I am in university, my exam every semester can be everything! If I dont work hard and I dont do well, I will face criticism from my family, I wont be able to get into a school I want, to take a course I like, to find a good job, to earn enough money and wow, actually the list is never ending. Sometimes Im quite amazed at the number of excuses I can come up with. Yes I do believe in Gods providence BUT I have very important human responsibilities too! Dear Su Ling, that is right I guess. However, there must always be a balance somewhere. You know that to grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord takes time, takes effort and it takes lots of hard work to search the scripture. Dont indulge in your academic growth at the expense of your spiritual growth, please. We are first Christians, then students. Every role that we play must be pleasing to God. I hope that you will manage your time better and come for YF. Come and experience for yourself the joy of hearing Gods word and being partakers of one anothers grace!

Dear Su Ling, despite all these potential impediments: the fear of loneliness when going to YF, the emphasis given to studies above God and the objections or rather persuasion of my mum to miss a YF meeting every Saturday I have come to treasure YF. You never know if you have another Saturday to attend YF. Treasure each YF every Saturday that God has lovingly given you, that you may study the mind of our God and what He wants you to know through our faithful speakers! Study hard as unto the Lord from Monday all the way to Saturday, and try to set aside every Saturday evening for the Lord for YF. Thats all I can do, that is to persuade and encourage you to attend YF. May the Holy Spirit continue to work in your heart to give you the desire to study Gods Word and have fellowship! And even as you start (or continue to) attend YF, dont lose the focus of why you have chosen to give your time to God every Saturday in the first place! Imbibe Gods Word in your heart! <3

The Purpose of Fellowship

YF Camp 2010

Why do you come for YF? Im sure all of you have been blessed in one way or another by the YF. The Christian walk is not an easy one. The narrow way to the strait gates of Heaven will, on many occasions, seem so impossible. But when you know there are others along this same walk, there is comfort. Never underestimate the importance and significance of a good Christian fellowship in

your life. Some have come to salvation while in the YF (I came to know the Lord during one of the YF camps). Many have had their faith strengthened while in the YF. Others been convicted to give up pet sins while in the YF. But even after witnessing so many blessed by God through the YF, there are still many who end up falling out of YF due to many reasons. Many of them are currently backsliding as they are really missing out on so much of the blessings that are found in the YF.

The Purpose of Fellowship

57

No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon. Matthew 6:24 So why do you come for YF? If the primary reason is not because of the desire to serve God and to seek him, you may one day find yourself detached from the YF and not come any more. If you are coming for YF because you have nothing else to do on Saturday night, then you may stop coming for YF once you have more happening activities. If you are coming for YF because of someone you like, then you could stop coming for YF once this person gets attached to someone else. When that happens, youll be part of the group who will be missing out on the many blessings which the YF has to offer. So what should not be your main drive for coming to YF? - For fun and games - Nothing else to do on Saturday nights - The people in YF are friendly and loving - Great food - There is someone I like in the YF - My girlfriend/boyfriend is in the YF - The nice songs different from those in

Sunday worship service - The speakers are vibrant and dynamic - All my close friends are there - Its near my home - Because my parents tell me so - To widen my social/business circle - The YF needs me - I have no idea Without swinging to the extreme case where the YF turns apostate, there may be some aspects of YF, over time, which may not be as appealing to you as when you first joined the YF. If you have always been seeking God first when coming for YF, you will still be able to find much joy in coming for YF even when YF changes over the years. So remember these two things: 1. God has a purpose for your coming to the YF. 2. And Satan will try his best to undermine your reason for staying in the YF. And now ask yourself, why do you really come for YF?

Top 5 Fails
The Setting: An online mafia game on Facebook, conducted via a group discussion thread. In brief, the game is Mafia vs. Town, similar to the polar bear game many of us are familiar with. Players with special roles would have to send in their night actions to the moderator according to what their roles dictate (e.g. Mafia lynching a town member, detective investigating another player, etc.) during the night phase when the town is sleeping. Apparently, Lim Zhongyan had a townaligned protective role in this game. Sadly, he blew his own cover. The Fail: Reply ALL *click*.

During one YF outing at Pasir Ris Park, Brian Lim opened in prayer:

One Sunday, when it was PsalmOnes Trees turn for lunch duty, Lim Zhongyan wanted to borrow Jonathan Ngs car (a Chrysler) out to get some extra groceries. He stood in front of a Chrysler, clicking the remote and trying to unlock it, but the door would not open. After a few tries, it finally relented. Happily, he climbed into the drivers seat only to realize a few seconds later that it was Uncle David Wongs Chrysler when the latters family started taking their places in the car! Unbeknown to him, Uncle David had unlocked it remotely, just in time for Zhongyan to get in!

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet. So the bard says, but one can be pretty certain that Shakespeare was never a YF group leader. The YF group structure is an essential feature of the YF, without which its ministry would be much muted. The Uth Chronicle team would like to thank God for sustaining us through the production of this publication, the CPYFers for their prayers and contributions, Dn Eric Lim for the illustrations, and all others who helped in one way or another.

Soli Deo Gloria!
