Product datasheet

Business critical systems within many financial institutions and private enterprises like Avis, Cargill, Ericsson, Globe Telecom, Shopzilla, and TriZetto, depend on Sybase ASE to deliver high transaction volumes with 24/7 reliability and lower IT operational costs. Sybase ASE Cluster Edition further builds on ASEs reputation for reliability and lower operational costs by delivering

a database infrastructure that enables IT to improve application service levels, reduce data center costs, and create a data infrastructure for future business growth. addressing todays challenges and tomorrows Vision Enterprise IT departments face daunting challenges with stretched budgets, data centers, and power systems, while ensuring applications meet even higher levels of availability and scalability. Sybase ASE Cluster Edition addresses these challenges in a single platform, while establishing a vision for data utility grids that are highly available, scalable, resource efficient. Protect Service Levels Push system uptime towards 100% by completing failover in seconds by using ASEs shared-disk clustering implementation. Maintain application service levels during peak loads or during routine maintenance by putting standby servers to work handling database requests. Maximize Resource Utilization Save on system, power consumption and administration costs by consolidating database workloads and applications running on underutilized hardware reducing up to 80% of servers. Incrementally increase system resources by adding server instances to the cluster as needed. Reduce Infrastructure Costs Drive down infrastructure costs by replacing monolithic hardware systems that have expensive, disruptive upgrade paths with a grid of database servers running on hardware that is as little as one quarter the cost to purchase.

Virtualized resource management and logical clusters ASE CLuster Edition uses a shared-disk architecture designed to support up to 32 ASE server instances that simultaneously access a Storage Area Network. The resources of each ASE server instance in the cluster are virtualized and managed within logical clusters.

A logical cluster is a grouping of ASE server instances, each having dedicated resources from the physical cluster along with unique routing, load balancing and failover rules. Workloads or applications are assigned to a logical cluster, virtualizing them across the servers in the cluster. Administrators create and manage logical clusters using the Workload Manager.

leVerage extreme caPabilities with ease Ensure Continuous Availability with Shared disk Clusters Unlike traditional active-active clustering solutions, Sybase ASE Cluster Edition automatically migrates connections if one or more nodes in the system fail. Built-in cluster software handles all tasks related to cluster node management, failover and recovery. Cluster nodes communicate system information through multiple redundant interconnect systems, which cannot be accessed by user connections.

Streamline Administration & Implementation with Logical Clusters The Workload Manager, Sybase Central, and Workspace are essential tools in streamlining administration. Workspace can be used to design and develop for an ASE Cluster Edition installation. In addition to regular database tasks, Sybase Central can also create a new cluster from scratch. Administrators can use the Workload Manager to optimize system operation, including: Migrate connections off nodes at scheduled times to take them offline for maintenance Apportion node resources to a logical cluster Define load balancing, failover, and routing rules for a logical cluster

balance System Load Automatically and transparently Unlike shared-nothing architectures, Sybase ASE Cluster Edition makes connection to the cluster transparent to applications so their connections can be redirected to the most appropriate ASE instance for load balancing, failover, or maintenance downtime. Furthermore, standby servers can be automatically brought online during peak load times, processing additional database requests as needed. extending ase cluster edition Replication for disaster Recovery Ensuring continuous operation requires both onsite failover clustering and multi-site disaster recovery. Enterprises can use Sybase Replication Server with ASE Cluster Edition to provide a complete plan for continuous database availability, with ASE Cluster Edition acting as source and target destinations. Administrators and developers can perform all of the tasks, such as configuring Replication Agent or marking tables for replication, from any instance in the cluster. Semantic Partitions Partitioning enables ASE databases to scale to larger volumes of data and larger numbers of users. By using the ASE Partitions option with ASE Cluster Edition, applications can improve system response times and reduce the time required for routine maintenance. ASE 15 supports horizontal partitioning across different disk devices using different semantic partitioning strategies such as Range, Hash, and List. Column Encryption Data encryption in ASE allows you to encrypt data at the column level, minimizing the performance impact by encrypting only sensitive data. No application changes are required to implement encryption because ASE handles the key generation, management and secure storage. This has the additional advantage of protecting sensitive data from insider threats because encryption keys are never exposed.

Architected to support up to 32 nodes each accessing a shared disk file cluster such as a Storage Area Network (SAN) Abstracts or virtualizes the resources of each node in the physical cluster into logical units. Manages the coordination and communication between resources in each logical unit. Groups a portion of the virtualized resources from multiple nodes in the physical cluster into a single virtual or logical cluster. Applications or workloads are assigned to separate logical clusters, each with own rules for load balancing and failover. Provides easy-to-use interface for managing and configuring logical clusters and the workloads assigned to them. Administrators can specify date/time for planned failover in order to take nodes offline. Coordinates nodes to provide single system image to applications using two independent networks interconnecting all nodes in the cluster. The two interconnects provide redundancy, eliminating the single point of failure. Designed to connect logically to a cluster while remaining connected physically to individual ASE server instances, allowing ASE to failover without losing the database connection. Automatically redirects client connections to different ASE server instances in the cluster for load balancing, failover and failback, based on load level measurements and status for each ASE server instance. Connections can migrate multiple times until it finds the first available or least-loaded ASE server instance. Supports replication for disaster recovery or enterprise integration using Replication Server. A clustered database can be a source or a destination in a Sybase clustered system. All replication tasks, such as configuring RepAgent or marking tables for replication, can be done from any instance in the cluster. Replication status is coherent across the entire cluster.
