1. Determine whether a primary care providers order is required 2. Assemble equipment and supplies 3. Perform hand hygiene and observe other appropriate infection control procedures. 4. Position and drape the client to a left lateral position, with the right leg as acutely flexed as possible 8. Place absorbent pad on bed under the clients buttocks 9. Lubricate about 5 cm of the rectal tube 10. Run some solution through the connecting tubing of a large-volume enema set and the rectal tube, to expel any air in the tubing; then close the clamp 11. Hold enema container at the level of the rectum. Have the client take deep breath. Simultaneously insert rectal tube slowly about 7-10 cm into the rectum by pointing tip into direction of clients umbilicus. Breathing out promotes relaxation of external anal sphincter 12.Raise the container to appropriate height (12-18 inches) and open clamp 13. Slowly administer fluid. Lower container or clamp tubing if client complains of cramping, or if fluid escapes around rectal tube

14. When solution has been administered or the client cannot hold more fluid, clamp and place layers of tissue around tube at anus and remove the rectal tube disposing of it properly 13. Clean lubricant solution and any feces from the anus with a tissue paper 14. Have the client continue to lie on the left side and retain the solution for appropriate amount of time 15. When there is strong urge to defecate, assist to bedside commode, bedpan or toilet 16. Assist to clean the perineal area after defecating 17. Return to comfortable position
