Characteristics of Good Research Crawford from his Definition has given some characteristics of research as follows, Research is simply

a systematic and refined technique of thinking, employing specialized tools, instruments and procedures in order to obtain a more adequate solution of a problem than would be possibly under ordinary means. (Meaning, Research follows a step by step order, you cannot leave any procedure without undertaking the previous ones, and it also involves the use of the appropriate instrument with following the correct procedure) (for example in the Methodology of an Investigatory Project, you must follow those steps on how did you create that project, by means of using the right and appropriate tool and for following the right and exact procedure) (for example your project is an insecticide, you need to follow the procedures on how to make it never leave a certain procedure if youre not yet finish doing it because it would totally make a big difference on the outcome, and you should also think broader and wider, on where and when will you create it, you should employ a critical thinking you, for example again that insecticide you should create it on the right time and the right place, make sure you are not eating when doing that to avoid dangers, another is that using the right instrument, preferably in creating those kinds of projects it would be better if you would use those Laboratory Apparatuses, and after finishing it, the application should be relevant on the certain project, for example that insecticide again, you will not use it on taking a bath, or applying it on the skin because the main purpose is to Spray it on air to kill insects) 1. It starts with a problem, collects data/facts, analyze these critically and reaches the decision based on actual evidence. (as we all know the heart of every research proposal is the research problem, when you already identified the problem you should collect facts and information about it and analyze those critically in order for you to create a hypothesis and answer that given problem) (for example, you are confident on taking up a test but the problem is that after taking the test you failed you collected every data on the test paper and tried to find out why did you fail until you collect everything and analyze your mistake, you forgot to answer a certain part and failed to follow the instruction after such analyzations you learned a lesson that next time you will follow and check up your test paper so that next time you will pass) 2. It involves work instead of a mere exercises of personal opinion

(meaning , you should lessen throwing out your opinion if it doesnt have FACTS/ EVIDENCE...in Research Words that doesnt have any basis or if it is irrelevant is non sense) 3. It involves genuine desire to know rather than to prove something, seeking to know not only what but how much and measurement is therefore a central feature of it (This shows that a Good Research should speak out about Humility and not just trying to prove something, to gain popularity or to satisfy self interest, a good research should give Informations that could help and not Informations that the main goal is to brag about something) Another author, Best gives a summary of the more important characteristics of a good research follows: (cited by Aquino, P. 2) 1. Research gathers new Knowledge or data from primary or firsthand sources. It is not Research when one merely restates or merely recognizes what is already known or what has been written. (it means, there should be Improvement, there should be Discovery and Resourcefulness in a research, if we just keep on repeating and repeating what had been discovered its not already Research its already Copying, we should be resourceful to improve it, we should be persevering in discovering something new so that it would be called RESEARCH) 2. Research is expert, systematic and accurate investigation. The researcher knows what is already known about his problem. He proceeds from this point carefully planning his procedures. Data are gathered, recorded, and analyze with as much accuracy as possible. (it means, it is an expert, organized and fast investigation about something. From that point the researcher should be critical and careful on planning out his procedures, because one mistake can make everything change, and in gathering data, recording and analyzing there should be the speed in doing that, but you should be careful, not just being fast, or in shorter phrase SLOWLY but SURELY, that term SLOWLY never means of being SLOW, but it means if the current research needs to take out right time you should wait for it) 3. Research is Logical and Objective, applying every possible test to verify the data collected and procedures employed. (Researchers personal interest is not acceptable in this characterteristic of Good Research, you should be Logical, and Objective, Guesswork should not be a part of it Evidences are always a part of it, for example your Investigatory Projects , needs to have many test before calling it out to be successful always follow those test if you succeeded then repeat it until you complied with the number of test needed, if you failed you should be honest, and always remember it is not made to prove something but to let someone know something )

4. Research endeavours to Organize Data in quantitative terms, if possible and express them in numerical measures. Research is Patient and Unhurried, (it means, the researcher needs to put up his effort, avoid judgement to permit data and come up with a conclusion. He realizes that the result never came from Hurried and Careless procedures, the researcher should have courage no matter what even if it may bring disapproval to social nature) 5. Research is carefully Recorded and Reported. (it means, all terms shall be carefully defined, all procedure are in correct detail, all factors are recognized, all references are carefully documented and all results are objectively recorded) From the Discussions above the characteristics of research should be summarized as follows 1. Research is Systematic: it follows an orderly procedure 2. Research is controlled: All variables except those being tested or being experimented upon are kept constant or not allowed to change or vary 3. Research is Empirical: Procedures employed and the data gathered are perceived in the same manner by all observers 4. Research is Analytical: there is a critical analysis of all data to avoid errors in their interpretation 5. Research is Objective, Unbiased, and Logical: all findings and conclusion are based on empirical data, and there is no effort made to alter the result of the Research 6. Research Employs Hypothesis: this is to guide the investigation process. In experimental studies, hypotheses are expressly stated but in descriptive studies the specific subproblems serve as the hypotheses and the hypotheses are tested and not proved 7. Research Employs Quantitative Method: Data are transformed into numerical measures 8. Research is Original work (except Historical Research) : data are gathered from primary sources 9. Research is done by Experts: He subjects his data to Expert Scrutiny 10. Research is Accurate Investigation, Observation and Description: All Conclusions are based on actual evidence.

11. Research is Patient and Unhurried Activity: Racing against time may lead to shaky conclusions and generalizations 12. Research requires an Effort-Making Capacity: It involves much work and time 13. Research requires Courage: because sometimes researcher often undergo hazards, discomforts and the like
