Correct the punctuation, spelling and grammatical mistakes in the following passage by drawing a circle around each mistake and writing the correct answer on top. The first one has been done for you. dreamt People have always dream of having mechanical slave robots that will do the owner's every command. However, it may be years before we actually find a machine to do this. Firstly, it is so difficult to programme a machine to respond to voice instructions. Human beings can recognise commands expressed in different ways but a robot cannot. Once the machine can translate the words, it will have to recognise them in the different ways that all voices pronounce them. Men have much deeper voices than women, for example. Also, accents, stress and volume varies. This creates many problems in translation. (5 marks)

Reading Comprehension (40 marks) Read the passage and answer the questions.

SAFE TO PRACTISE The practice of any martial art, combat sport, or self-defence course includes a risk of injury. This arises from the nature of the techniques taught and the limitations of the students using them. Students should be well aware of this before they enrol, but the level of risk can be reduced by observing simple rules of safety. In the first instance, students should be physically capable of doing the course. The level of fitness required may exceed the student's capabilities, so students should ensure that they are fit before enrolling. Those over 40 are urged to have a full medical examination before starting the course. Some medical disabilities affect the student's safety in the training hall, but only one rules training out all together. Anyone who suffers from haemophilia and related diseases should not try to enrol on any self-defence course. Epileptics can train provided the floor of the practice hall is padded. Cardiac sufferers will find training beneficial as long as they operate within their own limits and stop immediately on the onset of angina. Diabetics should make allowances for heavy exercise and ensure they have sugar available. Asthmatics will find training very beneficial: there are recorded instances of this condition improving greatly as a result of regular training. The club coach must be informed of any health problem so that he can make the appropriate allowances. Students who join MAC recognised self-defence courses will receive a Martial Arts Commission licence. This incorporates a personal accident policy which can be invalidated if a student fails to declare a health problem. Young students can be taught self-defence of a specialised type. They will not be taught eye strikes or groin kicks, but will be shown how to escape from holds applied by people of their own age and sex. They will also be taught throwing and ground work. The coach will give special attention to them and there may well be special classes arranged. 'Problem' youngsters can also be taught self-defence but its format will be altered from the course contained in this book. There is some evidence to suggest that practising a discipline of a martial art type can have beneficial results in these cases. As soon as students join an approved club, they will be given an application form for a Martial Arts Commission licence. This must be completed immediately and returned to the club coach for him to send to the MAC. Provided the coach observes the normal rules concerning MAC licence issue, students are covered by insurance as soon as they hand completed forms and the required sum of money to the coach. Insurance protects not only the licence holder, but the other students too. Despite the best supervision in the world, accidents happen. Insurance provides consolation, if not protection at these times. Answer the following questions in your own words in complete sentences. 1. What should a student consider first before enrolling in a martial arts course? Give a reason for your answer. (3 marks) A student should consider the risk of injury first before enrolling in a martial arts course. It is because the nature of the techniques taught may expose the student to injury, especially when he is not familiar with the techniques. 2. (2 marks) Asthmatics and cardiac sufferers may find training beneficial. 4. How might a self-defence course improve one's health? ( 2 marks) If one suffers from asthmatics, regular training can result in great improvement to the condition. 5. What does a writer mean when he says that a format of any self-defence course is flexible? (2 marks) The writer means that the contents of any self-defence course can be amended to fit the requirements of different students. 6. Why is it advisable for students to be covered by insurance when practising martial arts? (2 marks) It is advisable because insurance protects not only the student, but also other students who may be injured at the hands of the student. 7. Explain how one applies for an MAC licence. (2 marks) On joining an approved club, one will be given an application form for an MAC licence. This must be completed immediately and returned to the club coach for him to send to the MAC 8. Why do you think young students are not taught 'eye strikes' or 'groin kicks'? (2 marks) Young students may be not be matured enough to know when they ought not to use such dangerous techniques. 9. What aspects of martial arts are youngsters taught? Explain. (3 marks) Youngsters are taught self-defence of a specialised type. They are shown how to escape from holds applied by people of their own age and size. They are also taught throwing and ground work. 10. 1One day, a person went to horse racing area, Instead of counting the number of human and horses, he instead counted 74 heads and 196 legs. Yet he knew the number of humans and horses there. How did he do it, and how many humans and horses are there?

Let's assume that HM = Human and HR = Horse HM + HR = 74 2HM + 4HR = 196 (2HM + 4HR) - (2 HM + 2HR) = 196 - 148 2HR = 48 HR = 24 HM + (24) = 74 HM = 74 - 24 HM = 50 So, the solution is 24 horses and 50 humans. 2.A digital clock shows 2:35pm. This is the first time after midnight when all three digits are different prime numbers. What is the last time before noon when all three digits on the clock are different prime numbers?
List the single-digit primes. The single-digit prime numbers are 2, 3, 5, and 7. Select the 3 greatest numbers from this list and write them from largest to smallest. The last time before noon when all 3 digits are prime is 7:53. 3. The tower shown is made of congruent cubes stacked on top of each

other. Some of the cubes are not visible. How many cubes in all are used to form the tower?

METHOD 1: Strategy: Count horizontally, from the top layer down. Make a table that counts cubes separately for each layer. In each case, add the number of hidden cubes to the number of visible cubes.
Layer 1 (top) 1 + 0 = 1

22+1=3 33+3=6 4 (bottom) 4 + 6 = 10 Cubes in layer (visible + hidden)

1 + 3 + 6 + 10 = 20 cubes are used to form the tower. 4. . Hannah gives clues about her six-digit secret number:
Clue 1: It is the same number if you read it from right to left. Clue 2: The number is a multiple of 9. Clue 3: Cross off the first and last digits. The only prime factor of the remaining four-digit number is 11.

What is Hannahs six-digit number? Strategy: Consider the clues one at a time, starting with the most restrictive. Clue 3: The only prime factor of the 4-digit number is 11, so the number = 1111 or 111111 or 11111111, etc. Of these, only 111111= 1331 has 4 digits, so the middle 4 digits are 1331. Clue 1: The number reads the same right to left, so the first and last digits are the same. Call the number A1331A. Clue 2: The number is a multiple of 9, so the sum of its digits is a multiple of 9. A + 1 + 3 + 3 + 1 + A = A + 8 + A must equal 9 or 18. No digit A satisfies A + 8 + A = 9, but if A + 8 + A = 18, A = 5. Hannahs number is 513315.

4. Multiply:

This is 23 times 32, which will give us a 22 answer.

Our answer is a 22 matrix. 5. A company has found that when x units of a product are manufactured and sold, its revenue is given by x 2 + 100 x dollars and its costs are given by 240 x + 500 dollars. How many units must be produced and sold to make a profit of 10,000 dollars? (HINT: profit = revenue - costs) Let us use profit = revenue - costs to find a formula for the profit P P = ( x 2 + 100 x ) - ( 240 x + 500 ) Substitute P in the above equation by 10,000 dollars to obtain 10000 = x 2 - 140 x - 500 Write the equation in standard form and solve for x x 2 - 140 x - 10500 = 0 Solve the above equation for x x = 194.10 and x = -54.01 The number of units to produce must be positive, so x = 194.

As an exercise, check that for the above value of x the profit is approximately (because of the rounding) equal to 10,000

6.Which of the following is NOT an identity? A. cot(x + y) = [ 1 + cot(x) cot(y) ] / [ cot(x) + cot(y) ] B. tan(x + y) = [ tan(x) + tan(y) ] / [ 1 - tan(x) tan(y) ] C. sin(x - y) = sin(x) cos(y) - cos(x) sin(y) D. cos(2x) = 2 cos 2(x) 1 ans A. 7. Log 465 = A. 1.21 B. 1.81 C. 3.06 D. 3.01 ans D
