NONDESTRUCTIVE TESTING MANUAL TEMPORARY REVISION NO. 53-004 PART 6 EDDY CURRENT NON - SSI 5. PREPARATION FOR INSPECTION A. Make sure that the MLG door actuators, LH/RH, are removed (Refer to AMM, Chapter 32-31-35, Page Block 401). B. Make sure that the surface of the inspection area is clean and smooth. NOTE: Remove any paint runs and sealant from the inspection area. C. Check the inspection area for any visible damage or discontinuities. D. If the inspection area is unpainted, proceed to Para. 6. E. Measure the paint thickness in the inspection areas and compensation areas (Refer to Figure 4 and Chapter 51-10-00, Page Block 601). NOTE: If the paint thickness is 350 m the inspection cannot be carried out. The paint thickness must be reduced to 350 m. NOTE: If a variation in the paint thickness between the inspection area and the compensation point is 50 m a correct compensation cannot be carried out. Select a new compensation point close to the inspection area. 6. INSTRUMENT CALIBRATION A. Select NFe mode (Frequency 2 MHz). B. Use the calibration standard 2-164-551 to calibrate the instrument for lift-off and zero, in accordance with the manufacturers instructions. C. Sensitivity Setting (1) For painted surfaces (a) Place a plastic foil, corresponding to the measured paint thickness ( 30 m) on the surface of the calibration standard. (b) Position the probe directly over the 0.5 mm (0.019 in.) slot in the calibration standard and adjust the instrument so that the meter needle is at 90% 5% of full scale. NOTE: For unpainted surfaces, the foils are not be used.

Sensitivity Confirmation (1) For painted surfaces (a) Place a plastic foil, corresponding to the measured paint thickness ( 30 m) on the surface of the calibration standard. (b) Position the probe directly over the 0.2 mm (0.007 in.) slot in the calibration standard and check that the meter needle is 30% of full scale. NOTE: For unpainted surfaces, the foils are not be used. 7. INSPECTION PROCEDURE A. Position the probe near the inspection area, on the compensation point and adjust lift-off and zero as necessary (Refer to Figure 3, Sheet 1 and 2). B. Carry out the inspection using the probe scans as illustrated in Figure 3, Sheet 1 and 2. NOTE: Make sure that the probe tip is always at a right angle 15 to the inspection surface.

C. Any indication with a sharp meter needle deflection, to the right 30% of full scale must be evaluated. D. Measure the length of all evaluated indications (Refer to Chapter 51-10-07, Page Block 601). E. Mark all evaluated indications on the relevant Test Record Sheet (Refer to Figure 4, Sheet 1 and 2). NOTE: For examples of filling out the Test Record Sheet, refer to Figure 5.
